KemperSports Selected to Manage Historic Golden Horseshoe Golf Club

(NORTHBROOK, Ill.) – KemperSports has been selected to manage Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in historic Williamsburg, VA. As part of the Colonial Williamsburg destination, the golf offerings at Golden Horseshoe are comprised of the award-winning Gold Course, the Green Course and the nine-hole Spotswood short course.

The Gold Course remains one of the most highly-touted golf courses in the region, including recognition by Golf Digest as No. 79 on its list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses while GOLF Magazine ranks it as No. 55 on its recent list of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play.

The highly-acclaimed Gold Course originally designed in 1963 by renowned course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. reopened July 1 following a complete renovation by Jones’ son, Rees Jones. The restoration included new greens, fairways, rough and bunkers. The Gold Course now features new Bermuda turf on the fairways, surrounding rough, and greens. The bunkers were rebuilt to improve the drainage, look and playability. Other upgrades include the addition of nine forward tees, re-leveling all remaining tees, reconstruction of four green complexes (Nos. 2, 6, 12 and 18), and resurfacing of all remaining greens. The practice putting green was substantially expanded and the practice range added new a new short game "target greens" practice area.

Golden Horseshoe also includes the Green Course – a 1991 Rees Jones-design carved from the same rolling terrain as the Gold Course, offering a strong option for avid golfers and members with wider fairways, larger and more undulated greens, and more length on the par-72, 7,120-yard modern layout.

The venue’s golf is rounded out by the nine-hole, par-31, Spotswood Course. Built in 1949 as the original course alongside The Williamsburg Inn, the Spotswood Course received a 1964 renovation by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The course is meant to be played twice from each set of tees for an 18-hole routing. Named after colonial Governor Alexander Spotswood, the course is considered by GOLF Magazine as the “best short 9-hole course in the country.”

“The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is excited about partnering with KemperSports to bring new and larger audiences to enjoy the great golf experience at The Golden Horseshoe, while maintaining our traditional commitment to an outstanding personalized guest experience,” said Colonial Williamsburg President & CEO Mitchell B. Reiss.

“Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is one of the finest golf facilities in the region with a great history,” said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. “Already ranked in the top 100, we look forward to working with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to reintroduce the famed Gold Course to the golf world and continue enhancing the experience for members and guests.”
