(Maricopa, Ariz.) – Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club was recently ranked #84 on GOLF Magazine's 2016/2017 "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the United States” list. The Brian Curley and Fred Couples design moved up two spots (from #86 to #84) on the publication’s prestigious ranking of the best-of-the-best in public golf. In addition, GOLF Magazine named Ak-Chin Southern Dunes #5 in Arizona in their ranking of "Best Courses You Can Play in Arizona." Every two years, GOLF Magazine ranks the top golf courses you can play. The list is determined by a panel of 100 raters that includes major winners, course architects, journalists and golf connoisseurs.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes is no stranger to awards and accolades having been recognized in numerous Top 100, Best in State and Top Casino Course rankings by Golfweek. This Troon-managed facility was also one of the four finalists for the 2016 National Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA).
“It’s a tribute to the continued commitment from the Ak-Chin Indian Community, Troon Golf and our team of associates here at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, that we continue to garner these prestigious awards and rankings in such a competitive environment,” said Brady Wilson, general manager, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes.
The jump in the GOLF Magazine rankings can be attributed, in part, by the enhancement project that was completed in advance of the 2015 season. Course enhancements included a complete bunker renovation, additional tee boxes added to six holes, expanded fairway landing areas, and nearly a complete redesign of the par 3 17th hole. Facility enhancements included practice facility improvements to the club’s practice and short-game teaching areas and the creation of a new hybrid practice facility, which serves as a practice facility by day and converts to a six-hole short course called #miniDunes in the afternoon.
