Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Recognized by GOLF, Golf Digest, Golfweek

(Williamsburg, Va.) – Colonial Williamsburg’s premier golf club, the Golden Horseshoe, won distinctions from Golf Digest, Golfweek and GOLF Magazine in the publications’ annual expert and reader polls.

The most recent accolades include Golf Digest naming Colonial Williamsburg one of the “Best Golf Resorts in the Americas,” Golfweek recognizing the club’s 18-hole, par 71 Gold Course as one of the “Best Courses You Can Play” in Virginia and GOLF Magazine bestowing its “Gold Medal” to The Williamsburg Inn as part of the publication’s Premier Resorts 2016-2017 Awards.

“We are honored that Colonial Williamsburg has been recognized with these distinctions from Golf Digest, Golfweek and GOLF Magazine,” said Glen Byrnes, Colonial Williamsburg director of golf and recreation and PGA professional. “We are also extremely proud of our golf offerings and, with our Gold Course currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, we are confident our world-class facilities will maintain the standard for best-in-class courses both in Virginia and nationwide.”

Golf Digest, widely considered the leading consumer golf publication in the United States, recognized Colonial Williamsburg in the magazine’s annual 2016 Editor’s Choice Awards,
naming the resort as one of only five destinations selected for the “Best Golf Resorts in the Mid-Atlantic” category. Winners of The Golf Digest Editors’ Choice Awards were determined by editors after compiling information and advice from industry and golf-technology experts.

Additionally, Golfweek ranked the Golden Horseshoe as one of the “Best Courses You Can Play” in Virginia in its annual state-by-state roundup. The list celebrates best-in-class golf course design and architecture, with rankings determined by the publication’s expert team of 850 golf professionals.

GOLF Magazine once again recognized the Williamsburg Inn and Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in the publication’s second annual golfer’s choice awards, bestowing a “Gold Medal” to the Inn in its Premier Resort Awards for 2016-2017. The winners were determined by combining the results from two surveys completed by GOLF.com readers: the annual Golfer’s Choice Awards and the Premier Resorts Awards survey, which rates each resort based on golf, lodging, food and drink and service.

The Golden Horseshoe is set in a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary on gently rolling terrain surrounded by Virginia hardwoods with no encroaching residential development. The renowned Gold Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. more than 50 years ago, is currently closed for a multimillion dollar renovation project to reopen in the spring of 2017. The adjacent Green Course, designed by Jones’ son Rees Jones, represents the first father-son layout in the country. Robert Trent Jones Sr. also designed the popular executive-length Spotswood Course.

Revenue from golf play on the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s three courses supports the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s conservation, preservation, research and education initiatives.
