Spain had also been a final candidate to host The 2022 Match, submitting a comprehensive bid that unified both the public and private sectors and detailed the country’s proposals relating to institutional support, infrastructure, transport, security, commercial and legacy required for consideration by Ryder Cup Europe.
Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), said: “On behalf of my Federation, I would like to congratulate Italy on its success. While we are disappointed Spain has not been awarded The 2022 Match, we remain very proud of the strong and innovative bid we submitted to Ryder Cup Europe, and will continue with our ambitions to grow the game of golf at all levels across Spain.”
The bidding process for The 2022 Ryder Cup started in September 2014 when Spain, led by the RFEG, together with the Generalitat de Catalunya and other public Spanish and Catalan stakeholders, started working jointly on the bid dossier that was presented to The Ryder Cup selection committee on April 30, 2015.
In August, Prime Minister Rajoy’s Council of Ministers passed a resolution backing the bid, which supplemented strong support from the Catalan public sector, led by the Generalitat de Catalunya with partners Ajuntament de Barcelona, Ajuntament de Girona, Diputacio de Barcelona and Diputacio de Girona.
In addition, PGA Catalunya Resort and its owner, Denis O’Brien, provided extensive support to bring The Ryder Cup to Spain.
Escauriaza added: “I would like to thank all of our bid partners for their unified commitment. Each of them went above and beyond expectations to deliver a compelling and assured offer. I am sorry our efforts have gone unrewarded, but I am grateful to have such dedicated partners, and look forward to working with them all in the future.”
