Schwartzel Clinches Victory at Alfred Dunhill Championship

South African wins in his homeland gaming new Nike Lunar Control 4 footwear

(RELEASE) - Nike athlete Charl Schwartzel held his nerve to record a four-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in his native South Africa.

Tickets for 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Now Available

(Sammamish, Wash.) – Tickets for the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to be held at Sahalee Country Club from June 7-12, 2016, are now on sale.

Ticket prices for the Championship range from $10 for each practice round (June 7 - 8) to $75 for a six-day weeklong pass.

Sahalee Country Club, site of the 1998 PGA Championship and the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, as well as the 2002 WGC-NEC Championship, becomes the second Washington state site to host a U.S. women’s major. In 1946, Spokane County Club hosted the inaugural U.S. Women’s Open.

'DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend' DVD Released

(RELEASE) - The legacy of the prolific golf course architect Donald Ross has been brought to life in “DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend” a documentary film by Boston-based filmmaker Cob Carlson. The film is one hour and 55 minutes in length, and the DVD also contains 30 minutes of bonus scenes.

The second edition of the film has just been released and contains new graphic elements, and never seen before film footage and photos.

Donald Ross is the greatest golf course designer of all time. He is directly responsible for the creation of four hundred of the most splendid and challenging courses in the world. As the patron saint of golf course architecture, he is widely known for his beautiful, deceptively simple designs that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Ross turned golf course architecture into an art form.

The film, “Donald Ross: Discovering the Legend,” is about a man who left Scotland for America without enough money to buy his second meal, but who became one of the most respected and best paid individuals in all of sports. It features not only the great Ross courses that have hosted major championships, such as Pinehurst #2, Interlachen, Inverness, and Essex, but also lesser-known gems that are revered by their members for their playability and charm.

Viewers will see what the courses look like now, and what they looked like years ago. Clips from archival films, still photos, and architectural drawings are featured. Interviews with renowned golf course architects, professionals, writers, historians, course superintendents, and amateurs critically enrich the film, and explain why Ross’ classic designs have stood the test of time. Survey Provides Travelers with the Best In-flight Food including Health Ratings - Making Healthier Choices 35,000 Feet in the Air

(NEW YORK, NY) - According to Airlines For America, there are approximately 25.3 million passengers traveling during the 12-day Thanksgiving travel period, the highest number since the Great Recession Knowing what are the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ choices is a valuable tool for any traveler, so DietDetective.com once again rated the best ‘Calorie Bargains’ and “Calorie Rip-offs” at 35,000 feet.

DietDetective.com releases the 2015 Airline Food Survey rating foods for twelve (12) airlines. The survey assigned a “Health Score” (5 stars = highest rate, 0 star = lowest) based on ten criteria including health and calorie levels of meals, snack boxes and individual snacks, improvement and maintenance of healthy offerings, menu innovation and cooperation in providing nutritional information. The survey includes health ratings, average calories per airline, cost, comments, best bets, food offerings, calories, and exercise equivalents.

“This year Virgin America wins the top spot again with the "healthiest" food choices in the sky with Delta and JetBlue tied for second. Frontier Airlines received the lowest score, was the least cooperative and received a low health rating.  The 'Shame on You' goes to Frontier" says Charles Platkin, PhD, MPH, public health advocate, editor of DietDetective.com and Distinguished Lecturer (professor) at HUNTER College and the City University of New York School of Public Health.

The average number of calories per food item was 360 in 2012; in 2013 it was 388; last year 397, and this year it’s 400 (399.96), a 3 calorie increase over last year. In addition, they also appear to be decreasing the number of choices they offer.

Comments: Average calories for all items on Virgin America fell this year from 386.25 to 352.27 – a 34 calorie drop – that’s good news. But I still don’t understand why VA doesn’t put all their nutritional information on their website and in the air. Another year and the snacks are still the same – can’t we get at least one super healthy snack? How about an apple or an orange? But I am impressed that the total for the average meal has dropped by more than 70 calories - a 15 percent reduction. Nice work.
Best Bets: Avoid the individual snacks, since none of them is very healthy. Even the nuts, which are the best choice, are high in calories if you consume the entire package.  For breakfast try the Udi's Granola with Yogurt and Fruit, which is a bit high in sugar but overall low in calories at 330. The best snack box is the Protein Meal with hummus, nuts and tuna; the others are a bit high in calories and are not really worth it. For kids, skip the Jet Set Kid Pack if you can, and go for the half peanut butter and jam sandwich (which unfortunately jumped 60 calories from last year). It's still a better choice.
Best Bets: For the free snacks (on flights of more than 1.5 hours) the peanuts are the best choice. None of the "for sale" individual snacks is a good choice – still – same as last year. If you do get the nut mix, make sure to share it with at least two others. The snack boxes are very high in calories too. However, there are some good choices within the EATS Tapas box; you can certainly eat the hummus, bruschetta, olives, almonds, apricots and dark chocolate. Skip the rest, and make this a meal, not a snack.

The reality is that Delta is a big airline and has a complicated menu. It changes depending on where you are flying, so make sure to check below and online to see the food choices before you’re in the air. Of the breakfast options, on almost all flights you will see the continental breakfast. It’s 300 calories, but you can skip the muffin and save calories. If you’re on a transcontinental flight, your best bet is the LUVO Fresh Breakfast Medley (without the muffin). For Lunch/Dinner on regular westbound flights, the LUVO Grilled Chicken Wrap, and on eastbound flights the LUVO Roast Turkey & Havarti Wrap, are good choices (the sandwiches are available in reverse from last year). Again, you can skip the cookie to save calories. For Lunch/Dinner transcontinental flights the LUVO Quinoa Crunch Wrap Snack Box is a good choice and will fill you up; you can skip the cookie to save calories if you want. Don’t fall for the high calories in the Roast Beef Slider Combo or the Black Angus Burger.

Comments: Not much has changed with JetBlue except that the calorie count for the snack boxes is up by an average of 30 calories from last year. The individual snacks are still low in calories and nutritional value. The airline is showing progress, however, by posting nutritional information for its meals (See: http://www.jetblue.com/flying-on-jetblue/snacks-and- drinks/nutrition-facts/). All the other foods are packaged, so they must not feel the need.
Best Bets: This is the third year in a row that JetBlue has not done much with its snacks­still nothing much in terms of healthy individual snacks, and no nuts (maybe because of peanut allergies?). And keep in mind, just because the individual snacks are free doesn’t mean you should take more than one. If you buy the New York Nut Factory Omega-3 Mega Mix you need to share it with at least 3 other people, and avoid the jerky if you’re sodium sensitive.
As for the meal boxes, Pump Up has healthy ingredients (Mary’s Gone Crackers-Original, olives, humus and raisins) but remember that it’s a meal and should not be eaten as a snack. Skip the other meal boxes, which are high in calories and fat and offer little in terms of nutrition. If you are on a flight that offers the Eat Up Café, the Yogurt and granola, the Kale & Quinoa Salad, the Spicy Soba & Korean-Style Chicken, and the Veggie Platter are all good choices. Skip the Grilled Chicken and Brie Sandwich, which is very high in calories and low on nutrition.

Comments: The staff is VERY helpful in getting the information out, which is nice, and shows that Air Canada cares about its food. It keeps calorie counts low for meals. That’s the good news. The bad news is that when I look for healthy choices, defined as high in nutrient value, there is not a lot to choose from.
Best Bets: For breakfast, the Greek yogurt parfait is good – and will probably fill you up. And while the egg sandwich has bacon, it’s still low in calories. If you’re looking for a snack, pick the Chicken Soup. It's more like a meal than a snack – a good thing. The cashews or almonds need to be shared. The Celery & Carrots with Ranch Dip (if you limit the dip to no more than half) is also a good choice. While the hummus sounds healthy, the pretzels offer little nutritionally, and you’d be better off having a meal if meals are available. The Chicken Club Wrap is good; it has turkey bacon, which is better than regular bacon. I would skip the falafels. On flights of more than 4 hours departing from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, the sushi is a very good choice.

Comments: For the first few years of the survey Alaska Airlines was excited to be a part of the mix. Now, they say they want to opt out. Too bad Alaska – this is not an opt in–or-out kind of thing. Just because you’re not happy with the results, you can’t pull out. Interestingly enough, the average number of calories in their foods has skyrocketed from 444 to 537. The calories in an average meal also went up significantly from 456 to 606. I was looking over Alaska Airlines’ website, and under its snack section they have the following under the header Healthy Snacks: “Our inflight snacks are a little different, we offer a range of snack boxes that are free of Trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, and MSG.” They’ve actually added the term “Healthy Snacks” since last year – and it’s not entirely accurate. While having no MSG, HGCS or trans fat is good, there are many products that have eliminated those ingredients and are still not healthy – basically, it’s a marketing ploy. Keep in mind, all nutritional information for Alaska Airlines has been calculated by our staff registered dietitian.
Best Bets: Among the snack boxes, the Mediterranean Tapas hasn't changed much from last year and is still the healthiest choice. It has olives, hummus, almonds, dried fruit and even a dark chocolate bar. But keep in mind that 497 calories is a bit high for a "snack" (or even a meal), so it's best if you share the box or have it as a meal replacement. For kids, the snack box may be tempting, but it's always better for children (and adults) to eat a real meal than it is to "snack" aimlessly. FYI, the beef jerky is low in calories but very high in sodium. As far as breakfast goes, you have one high calorie, unhealthy choice and a somewhat healthy Fruit and Cheese plate. For the cheese plate, skip the crackers and half the cheese. For dinner your best bet is the
Homestyle Chicken Dinner at 453 calories.

Best Bets: Other than the humus, the snack boxes are not great in terms of health (and not just calorie-wise). Avoid the Deli Snack Pack and don’t let your kids near the Wingz Kids Snack Pack. Among the individual snacks, nuts are the healthiest choice.

Comments: Paraphrasing spokesperson Paul Berry, the airline believes it’s doing passengers a favor. Their media department is arrogant and snarky – they just don’t care, maybe just like the airline? This year, because they didn’t like their previous rating, they decided to not participate. I guess if you drop the price low enough anyone will fly on anything. Again paraphrasing Mr. Berry from last year: passengers should bring their own food and drinks. But in my opinion, the airline has a responsibility to serve foods that are healthier. As a passenger you don’t have too many options if you don’t bring your own food. Why not offer 3 or 4 healthy foods?
Best Bets: The cup of noodle soup at 290 calories is the only choice that will feel like a real meal. Watch out for the Nuggets & Nuts at 600 calories, and all the muffins are at least 400 calories­not the best choices unless you split one (if you're the type of person who can do that). Bringing your own food is actually the best option.

Comments: Wow, they have lots of snacks! And this year I was surprised that the airline actually sent over some nutritional information for its snacks – much better than last year. They claim that getting the info for the other foods would cost $17,000 –which is ridiculous. The airline food provider has exact recipes for these foods; otherwise they would taste different each time, and they don’t. The airline could easily get a nutritionist to do the menu analysis. But, since they didn’t, the calories for all the meals were estimated by Diet Detective nutritionists. Hawaiian is one of the few airlines to serve free food on domestic flights. But watch out­their food is high in calories.
Best Bets: There are no healthy snacks (or meals either), but if I had to pick one – gosh – the popcorn -- nah. Bring your own. For the complimentary meals try to go light on the breads, treats and dressings. In the end, it would be best to eat before you go, or else you might wind up feeling lethargic and cranky after one of these calorie-heavy meals.

Book Review: Try Fox Tossing: And other Forgotten and Dangerous Sports, Pastimes, and Games

Looking for a good read over the holidays? Try Fox Tossing: And other Forgotten and Dangerous Sports, Pastimes, and Games by Edward Brooke-Hitching.

While this is a golf blog and I’ll say a bit about the golf-related games, I’d be remiss if I didn’t start with the “headliner” sport - fox tossing. Played mainly in 17th century Poland, fox tossing - or fuchsprellen - consisted of a team of two people standing 20-25 feet apart with a strip of netting or fabric between them. The object of the game was to time your tug so the terrified fox would cross the fabric and be launched high into the air.

Thought to have roots in a superstition to bring good luck through the winter months, the cruelty wasn’t limited to foxes. Hares, badgers and wildcats would also be used as unsuspecting equipment.

On to a much more humane, if not frustrating, sport ... golf. Have you ever heard of aerial golf? Well, in the late 1920s, pilots would take off from Curtiss Airfield in Long Island and drop their “tee shots” onto greens at the Old Westbury Golf Club. A partner on the ground would then hole out.

For those more grounded, there was bow-and-arrow golf, where a cry of “fore” would’ve come too late. Also known as archery golf, golfers and archers would compete against each other. The archers would generally have three types of arrows - a flight arrow for the drives, medium approach arrows into the “greens” and a flu-flu for “putting.” Not wanting to destroy the actual greens, holing out was usually to a target (tennis ball on a can or something on a tree).

Considering archery golf also saw it’s height of popularity in the 1920s, there must be some connection to the “Roaring 20s” and free-flowing alcohol that brought out many variations to the sport of golf.

Pre-dating those two and in another part of the world, was phosphorescent golf. Peter Tait, a professor of natural philosophy and golf fanatic, proposed night golf to a group of dinner guests in 1871. The balls would be coated in phosphorescent paint for visibility. All went according to plan until a colleague of Tait’s, Alexander Crum Brown, retrieved his ball from the hole and realized his glove was on fire. The glove’s material reacted to the chemical on the ball, which then spontaneously combusted.

Those are just a few of the interesting sports and games detailed in this book. You may also be interested in the Great Tricycle Regatta, ice tennis or waterfall riding. “There is rich history behind the foundation of this golf course, thanks to my father’s vision and the legacy he built beneath it,” says Rees Jones, who has designed or redesigned more than 170 courses throughout the span of his career so far. “It has been an honor to work meticulously in tandem with Dolphin Capital to essentially revive and enhance what was originally a dramatically routed course by my father.  We were given a unique opportunity to create an even more dramatic routing and breathe life into a design that will ultimately be enjoyed for generations to come on an international scale.”

The Playa Grande Golf Course has been designed to offer players a balanced experience, with both the front and back nine featuring a mix of holes running along the cliffs. The gently rolling landscape – providing natural undulations, ideal for golf – are accented by wide fairways, meticulously contoured greens and Rees Jones’ signature wind swept coastal style bunkers.  Adding to its distinctive qualities, the course features what is being labeled as one of the finest finishes in the game of golf – which includes the dog-leg right par-5 on the 14th hole that allows golfers to finish on the cliff’s edge overlooking the beach, resort and ocean.  From there, the final four holes play along the rocky cliffs -- high above the ocean.  The final hole is a risk/reward par-5 – which requires the player to choose a shot from one cliff to another and over a cove of water in order to reach the green in two or take the safer three shot route around the ocean.

Led by PGA professional Julio Santos -- who was born in the Dominican Republic and is known today as one of the country’s most respected golf professionals and teachers -- the staff at Playa Grande Golf Course will offer a full program of instruction for all ages and levels of play, honoring the traditions and decorum of golf while making the game accessible to new and young players.  Instruction includes large on-practice putting greens, a practice fairway and short game area.

McIlroy Clinches Back-to-Back Race to Dubai Titles

Northern Irishman ends season in style with scintillating success in the desert

(RELEASE) - Nine months on from his first victory of the 2015 season, Nike athlete Rory McIlroy concluded his campaign with another win in Dubai, this time at the DP World Tour Championship – a victory that also saw him finish atop the Race to Dubai standings for a second straight year.

Four-time Major champion McIlroy – who began the final round a shot behind the tournament leader on the Earth Course – debuted the new Nike Lunar Control 4 shoes, featuring dynamic Nike Flywire technology that provides lateral support in the midfoot, while a new, robust external heel counter helps lock the foot in place to support his powerful 120mph-swing from the ground up.

In addition to the Lunar Control 4, he also gamed a new Nike Vapor Prototype driver and Nike RZN Prototype golf ball. He led the driving distance chart for the week, averaging 322.1 yards off the tee for the four rounds at Jumeirah Golf estates, as he went on to record his third Race to Dubai title in four years.

"To finish my season in this way is so special, not just to win the Race to Dubai title but also to record another tournament victory on The European Tour – it’s incredibly-satisfying," said McIlroy after finishing 21-under-par, a shot clear of his nearest rival.

"I felt I had great control of my golf ball this week, off the tee and with my irons, and I certainly gained confidence as the tournament progressed on the greens," he added.

The 26-year-old McIlroy recorded a stunning total of 26 birdies, testament to his crisp ball-striking and clinical ability on the greens. The Northern Irishman was also using a Nike Method Prototype putter, as he signed for scores of 68, 68, 65 and 66, finishing in the top-5 for putts-per-round with an average of 28.3.

The victory in Dubai was McIlroy’s fourth of the campaign, following wins previously at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, WGC-Cadillac Matchplay and Wells Fargo Championship.

Contested for the first time at both the Seaside and Plantation Courses at Sea Island Resort, the sixth edition of The RSM Classic has provided beautiful views along the ocean and through the marshes of southeast Georgia.

The par-72 Plantation Course plays at 7,058 yards, while the par-70 Seaside Course runs 7,005 yards. Titleist Brand Ambassador Robert Streb (7-under through 54 holes) looked to defend his title this week after he earned his first PGA TOUR crown in a playoff during the 2014 event, but Kevin Kisner (16-under) holds a three-shot lead heading into the final round.

Capping off the 2015 campaign, 105 players trusted a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success. That’s more than six times the nearest competitor with 16 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist was also the top choice in the hybrid (27) and iron (41) categories. Vokey Design Wedges topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (200) category and Scotty Cameron putters were the top choice in the putter (62) category.

Product Review: CEP Compression Socks

I’m a firm believer in creating comfort from the ground, up. If your feet hurt, your legs hurt and that pain can quickly move to your back and neck. Try playing quality golf based upon that scenario.

With that in mind, I was eager to test out German-made CEP compression socks. While they make knee-high compression socks and sleeves that pull up over the calf, I prefer no-show and short socks when playing golf.

Those of you who wear no-show socks are undoubtedly aware of heel slippage. I was once walking off the first tee when my shoe “ate” my sock. Fixing it twice didn’t solve the problem, so I played the rest of the round with one sock. By the turn I had a blister and was miserable on the back nine. This will not happen with CEP, thankfully.

Both the no-show and low models provide targeted compression for improved support and fit, a seamless toe box and anatomically correct design (your left foot is different than your right, after all). The low sock also offers achilles stability for added support and protection.

Assuming you’ve spent plenty of time selecting the right shoe for your foot ... Why not give that comfort an added boost with a quality pair of socks? If you walk the course, like I do, your feet will thank you after 4+ hours trudging up and down miles of hills and valleys.

Listen, golf can be hard enough under ideal circumstances. Don’t let sore, tired feet be a hinderance to your game. We all look for advantages when we can get them. Don’t allow your game to be hit with this disadvantage when it can easily be avoided.

CEP socks aren’t cheap. Nothing worthwhile ever is. You’ll pay $18.50 for the no-show and $22.50 for the low. But here’s the kicker: Their return policy is as simple as it gets. If you don't like them, send them back. Golf Channel to Show Start of The Open Qualifying Series for 2016 with the Emirates Australian Open

Australian Open Marks First of 14 Open Qualifying Series Events Leading up to NBC Sports Group’s Coverage of The Open
