The Club at Viniterra Debuts in Golfweek's 'Best Courses You Can Play' in Virginia Ranking

(NEW KENT, VA.) — The Club at Viniterra has earned the No. 6 ranking in Virginia among Golfweek’s 2015 “Best Courses You Can Play.”

Virginia’s only newcomer on Golfweek’s prestigious ranking of the state’s Top 10 courses, The Club at Viniterra and its 2009 Rees Jones design are the centerpiece of Boddie-Noell’s Viniterra — a private, gated community of luxury estate home sites and resort cottages in the New Kent Vineyards Development, centrally located between Richmond and Williamsburg just off Interstate 64’s Exit 211.

When the golf course fully matured and developers opened for public play, Viniterra quickly won the hearts of the area’s golfers.

“This prestigious Golfweek honor means a lot to us,” said Viniterra’s owner Barton Tuck, whose Wingfield Properties purchased the course more than two years ago. “We believe we have something pretty special here at Viniterra. It is nice to know the most knowledgeable golf experts in the world agree.”

To build Golfweek’s list, an experienced team of more than 700 evaluators rated each public layout on the basis of 10 criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes.

The Club at Viniterra was built as an amenity to help sell real estate upon nearly 1,200 acres of wooded and rugged terrain. Viniterra can stretch to nearly 7,800 yards from the back tees and flies against the grain of a typical Tidewater golf course design. The masterful Jones course routing incorporates many of the diverse, natural features of the site including frequent and dramatic elevation changes, various wetland areas and portions of mature, deciduous forest. Where appropriate, ponds and a total of 13 bridges were built to provide both strategic and aesthetic value.

“What you see [at Viniterra] is what you get in terms of being able to see most every shot on the golf course,” said Jones. “There are generous fairways and open approaches to many of the greens. If you have happen to go over some greens, there are catch basins and grass hollows to capture those shots.”

There are three different areas along the golf course from which the award-winning New Kent Winery can be seen and enjoyed. Viniterra’s vineyard has also produced some of the finest New World wines in the Commonwealth.
