Product Review: Ground Force Trainer

With age comes wisdom. That’s great, but each passing year also often means less flexibility and fewer yards off the tee once you hit 40. The latest driver may help a bit, but let’s face it ... the $400 driver you bought a couple years ago isn’t the problem.

What if you had a guarantee from a company to increase your distance off the tee by 5-15 yards, regardless of age? Young bucks and middle-aged golfers take notice ... The Golf Gapper Ground Force Trainer program has done just that, and promises to do so in only four weeks.

How? It’s all in the backswing.

During the backswing, power is developed when the golfer creates ground force with their trail-side leg and gluteal muscles. This sensation is difficult to create without an unstable surface during development of this specific action. The Ground Force Training disks create this instability and cause a specific muscular reaction that mimics the sensation and strength necessary to motor learn the proper load in the back swing and feel the connection with the ground.

The gluteus medius - one of the three gluteal muscles (along with minimus and maximus) - is situated on the outer surface of the pelvis and is responsible for hip rotation and hip stability. These muscles also help the golfer maintain balance.

The rotational disks included are similar to those used in Pilates to teach exercises that require movement of the lower and upper body in opposite directions and to exercise the “balance muscles.” In addition to strength and muscular awareness, balance is enhanced with the Ground Force Trainer.

While using the Ground Force Trainer, pay special attention to the front side of the square disks, which gives immediate feedback to the loss of proper muscular and power position of the trail side when any movement from front parallel is seen. Seeing any movement from parallel gives the golfer specific guidance for correction, creating proper muscular development and motor learning for strength and coil.

The Gapper Ground Force Trainer program is the work of Dr. Jenni Martin, MSDC LPGA Class A teacher and club professional. A member of the medical, fitness and health profession for more than 30 years, her interest in golfers began while helping Natalie Gulbus. Martin has advanced certification in orthopedics, sports and recreational injuries as well as K-vest, TPI medical professional and golf instructor. She has her master’s degree in Biomechanical injuries.

Selling for $119 (tax and shipping included), the Ground Force Trainer package includes the patent pending square rotational disk, power pole, DVD, lead-leg support foam pad, instruction manual and mesh carry bag.

This product came at the ideal time as I’ve been revamping my swing over the offseason. The day after first using the Ground Force Trainer, I felt muscle fatigue - similar to the feeling achieved after starting a new workout. While I’m only a couple days into the program and won’t know if I’ve gained the promised yardage for a few weeks, I’m already experiencing results - more consistent takeaway from address. My position at the top, downswing and follow through are one me, but the Ground Force Trainer is providing a solid foundation from which to begin.
