Fernandina Beach Golf Club to Host Freedom Cup for Local Military Bases
(AMELIA ISLAND, FL) - Fernandina Beach Golf Club - managed by Billy Casper Golf - will host the first annual Freedom Cup for three local military bases June 18.
The Ryder Cup-style tournament will feature 50 golfers from each installation - Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay - comprised of two-person teams competing against the other bases in two nine-hole matches.
Festivities kick-off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun-start, and the overall winning base will claim the Freedom Cup. The tournament is free for active duty military and includes greens and cart fees, range balls, prizes, lunch and a ticket to the Country Rocks the Beach concert on June 22. The event is open to the public and sponsored by Budweiser.
"We're excited about this becoming an annual event at Fernandina Beach," says Chad Barhorst, General Manager of Fernandina Beach Golf Club. "We want to show our appreciation for the active duty military in our area with a fun, festive atmosphere and friendly competition."
The Freedom Cup further advances Billy Casper Golf's spirit of philanthropy as the company produces several significant events for charities in health, military and education sectors. The company's foremost initiative is the annual nationwide "World's Largest Golf Outing" set for Monday, August 14, 2013. Last year, the event hosted more than 7,800 golfers at 100 courses and raised more than $400,000 for Wounded Warrior Project.
Fernandina Beach Golf Club - located in the second oldest city in the United States - features 27 distinctive holes consisting of North, West and South nine-hole layouts of varied difficulty and design. At par-35 and 3,094 yards, the North nine is the oldest course on Amelia Island, opening in 1956. The championship-length West course's No. 2 hole is its signature, a par-5 monster measuring 607 yards from the tips. The South nine was the last to open in 1972 and is considered the most scenic.
A comprehensive practice area with a grass driving range and putting green helps golfers hone their games. Group and individual lessons are available through PGA-certified golf instructors.
Opened in 2000, the well-appointed clubhouse includes a fully-stocked pro shop, restaurant and banquet facilities for up to 200 guests.
