Saint Andrew’s Golf Club to Support The First Tee of Metropolitan New York through 125th Anniversary Gala Celebration

(NEW YORK) - The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York will commemorate 125 years of golf in America with a gala evening June 8, 2013 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.  All net proceeds from the event will benefit The First Tee of Metropolitan New York, a youth development organization that teaches important life skills and core values to youngsters through the game of golf.

The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is the oldest in the country, dating back to 1888.  As one of the five founding member clubs of the United States Golf Association, the club has been a pioneer for the game of golf.

"As a membership, we wanted to use our 125th anniversary as an opportunity to not only celebrate this milestone, but also give back to the broader golf community to which Saint Andrew's belongs," said Victor von Klemperer, President of The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club.  “Rather than simply organizing an anniversary celebration for ourselves, we have decided to structure this event to include a charitable element, which we believe endows it with an even greater purpose and wider significance."

In 1988, The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club celebrated its centennial at the Waldorf-Astoria with guests such as Jack Nicklaus (Player of the Century Award Winner), Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Patty Berg, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw and Pat Bradley. On June 8, 2013, The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club will once again bring together great leaders, supporters and heroes of the game to celebrate its history, the game of golf today and the children who are its future.

The First Tee of Metropolitan New York was selected as the event beneficiary due to its commitment and dedication to providing meaningful educational opportunities both on and off the golf course to children who would not otherwise have access to the game.  With its headquarters in the Bronx, The First Tee serves kids throughout the local community to instill life lessons such as honesty, integrity, responsibility and sportsmanship.

"Our organization is proud to partner with The Saint Andrew's Golf Club on their anniversary and continue our relationship with such a prestigious and historic club that was the birthplace of the game not only in our area, but for the entire country," said Barry McLaughlin, Executive Director of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York.  "Through this event, we are able to collectively look back at golf's past while also looking forward to the next generation of golfers from all walks of life."

In addition to the gala evening, The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club will host numerous events throughout the week to celebrate the club’s storied past.  For more information on the gala and these events, please contact Terry Geller at Tgellerdds@gmail.com.
