Costa Palmas Golf Club Marks One-Year Anniversary

Costa Palmas Hole #3, credit: Evan Schiller

Firm, fast conditions prevail at Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course

(Los Cabos, Mexico) – Costa Palmas Golf Club, the flagship amenity of a 1,000-acre beachfront resort community fronting the Sea of Cortes on the undiscovered East Cape, marks its one-year anniversary this month.

The golf club, which includes a six-hole, par-3 short course and a 30,000-square-foot putting green lit for night play, was designed to attract a broad range of golfers. Its centerpiece is a links-style course built by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. that’s accessible to community homeowners as well as guests of the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.

The multi-themed layout, with five sets of tees ranging from 7,221 to 4,590 yards (par 72), is a core golf course, with hotel and residential buildings spaced around its perimeter. The club’s new superintendent, Victor Zarate, has realized the designer’s vision for the facility by producing firm, fast playing conditions, especially on and around the greens.

Described by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. as “a golf symphony composed of three movements and two transitions,” the golf course occupies a rolling expanse of coastal desert that rises to nearly 40 meters above sea level. The first six holes, the layout’s “dunescape,” features prominent sand hills and greens with open, unguarded entrances, a links-style characteristic that encourages golfers to play bump ‘n run shots.

The par-5 seventh, crossed by an arroyo, serves as a transition to the course’s second movement—six “upland” holes that offer panoramic views of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. This parkland-style section, generously wide off the tee, is flanked by large-scale bunkers and groves of mesquite trees.

The layout’s dramatic finishing stretch provides glimpses of the estuary and azure-blue coves that make Costa Palmas a world-class sport-fishing destination. The 18th hole, a majestic left-to-right par 4, returns players to the sea and the resort community’s marina

“We were given a spectacular site and moved over a million cubic yards of material to shape a golf course generous to the golfer that takes advantage of ocean views without being right on the water,” Jones said. “The challenge comes into play as the contouring around the green complexes can either be forgiving or rejecting. It takes an imaginative short game to score at Costa Palmas.”

While the non-returning nines create a true golf “experience,” the flexible course design offers shorter loops that make a six- or seven-hole round of relaxed social golf possible.

The experience is further enhanced by Bouchie’s a casual café located beside the practice facility that welcomes novices, experts, families and friends. With its comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, Bouchie’s, serving everything from ice cream to hand-crafted cocktails, is a great place to relax and unwind.

Costa Palmas has partnered with Patronus Medical on a health and safety initiative for the resort community, including the golf course. The program has two guiding principles: prevent contamination from the outside through a comprehensive symptom and temperature check for all visitors prior to arrival; and reduce the possibility of community spread through strict PPE requirements, including reduction of traffic in common areas and enhanced sanitary measures. Program components include staff COVID-19 antibody screening and daily temperature checks; on-site medical doctor and access to a Patronus physician via telemedicine; social distancing; and heightened protocols for transportation, housekeeping, dining and more.

In addition, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has entered into a consulting agreement with Johns Hopkins Medicine International, the global division of health care leader Johns Hopkins Medicine, to inform Four Seasons health and safety decisions during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Grounded in the principles of care, trust and service, the “Lead With Care” program has been be implemented at Four Seasons properties worldwide, including the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.

Fourth Largest PGA Section Will Provide Additional Affordable Access to Golf by Offering Rounds for $5 or Less

(PEBBLE BEACH, Ca.) — Youth on Course — the non-profit organization dedicated to opening doors, supporting dreams and transforming the lives of young people through opportunities on and off the golf course – has partnered with the charitable affiliate of the North Florida Professional Golf Association (PGA), Yours & One Other, to deliver affordable and accessible golf and personal growth opportunities on and off the golf course to the young people across North and Central Florida.

With the addition of the fourth largest PGA Section in the United States, the partnership opens the doors to affordable golf for more than 1.9 million of the approximately 2.5 million youth golfers across the continent. Committed to making the game more appealing, inclusive and accessible to nurture the next generation of lifelong players and lovers of the game, junior golfers may play rounds for $5 or less at more than 1,400 participating courses across 39 states and Canada. Youth in North and Central Florida ages 6-18 can sign up for a membership here: www.youthoncourse.org/join.

“Ever since we began expanding Youth on Course across the country, we’ve been focused on finding the right partner to help us implement the program within Florida communities,” says Michael Lowe, vice president of programs for Youth on Course. “There is a great love for the game in the region, and this partnership with the North Florida PGA gives youth golfers the opportunity to have more access to golf courses they may not have had previously.”

Other youth programming managed by the North Florida PGA include local and regional Drive, Chip, & Putt, The Boys & Girls Junior North Florida PGA Championship, and PGA Jr. League.

“We strive to promote the overall enjoyment and growth of the game in the North and Central Florida region, and joining forces with Youth on Course helps us continue to accomplish this mission,” says Steve McMillen, Executive Director “Youth on Course allows youth to not only deepen their love for golf, but also explore opportunities off the course that would not have been possible if they didn’t take up the game.”

In addition to affordable access to the game, Youth on Course puts their members’ lives on a different trajectory by providing off-course growth and learning experiences including paid internships, a scholarship program and caddying opportunities. In 2020, the organization awarded 19 members with scholarships to support their college dreams. More than 70% of scholarship recipients are minorities and over 42% of scholarships awarded in 2020 were to members set to be the first in their family to attend college. Since the inception of the scholarship program in 2008, 260 Youth on Course members have been awarded with scholarships totaling close to $2 million in financial support. The current scholarship retention rate is ninety-three percent.

Born out of the Northern California Golf Association in 2006, Youth on Course puts money back into the state organizations and courses. The organization’s structure helps golf courses fill typically unused tee times and garner additional revenue with more than 40% of members playing with paying adults. They have achieved significant milestones including more than 100,000 members playing more than one million rounds of golf while generating over $8 million in tee-time revenue back to individual golf courses.

Silverado Resort and Spa Named "California Golf Course Of The Year" By CGCOA

(Napa, Calif.)
– Silverado Resort and Spa has been named the 2020 “California Golf Course of the Year” by the California Golf Course Owners Association (CGCOA) Board of Directors. The CGCOA Board recognized Silverado Resort and Spa for its connection to the PGA TOUR, all that the courses and region have had to overcome in recent years, and the exemplary characteristics of the property.

The CGCOA Course of the Year award honors a California golf course demonstrating excellence in five areas: exceptional quality of the course, exemplary water stewardship practices, exceptional quality of ownership and management, outstanding contribution to its community, and significant contribution to the game. The Course of the Year Award winners come from the CGCOA’s core membership, which make an outstanding contribution to the game of golf in their markets, and are model operations to their peers.

“We considered several courses this year, each of which had a compelling story, but in the end Silverado really was a very clear choice,” said Marc Connerly, Executive Director, California Golf Course Owners Association. “We believe that Silverado will represent California very strongly in the national Course of the Year competition.”

Silverado Resort and Spa’s two 18-hole, par-72 championship golf courses (North and South) were originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Both courses were redesigned by World Golf Hall of Fame member and resort owner Johnny Miller. The quality of the courses is such that the PGA TOUR begins its season at Silverado, playing the Safeway Open in September. The 2020 Safeway Open was won by Stewart Cink and was executed in a safe, COVID-free manner without spectators, all while under the pre-tournament threat of California wildfires.

Led by Miller’s efforts, Silverado has experienced a resurgence over the last decade and is once again considered an iconic Northern California destination. With renovations to the golf courses, mansion building and guest rooms, guests experience modern day luxury while honoring the resort’s tradition and history. Ownership continues to invest in the property and there is a spirit of continual progress.

Over the last four years, the region has dealt with fires, power outages, poor air quality, record setting rainfall and now COVID-19.  Through these challenges and obstacles, Silverado has persevered, while helping the surrounding community. The resort has provided shelter, meals, financial contributions and many memorable outings for members of the community. From celebrating the local fire departments and first responders to supporting four local high school golf programs, serving from the heart is a daily theme at Silverado.

“Our team is grateful to be honored for all of the hard work put forth this year to overcome many challenges. We are very appreciative of our partnership with Troon and organizations like the CGCOA that have provided resources to help us succeed. We welcome all to come and enjoy soon,” said John Evans, General Manager of Silverado Resort and Spa.

Randpark Golf Club Selects Inrange to Elevate Driving Range Experience

Gamified Entertainment for All Skill Levels Now Open in Johannesburg

(LONDON, England) – Inrange Golf has been selected by Randpark Golf Club, home of the 2020 South African Open and Joburg Open, to upgrade the facility’s two-tier driving range with its industry-leading ball-tracking system that creates the ideal practice and entertainment environment for patrons.

Continuing its global expansion, Randpark is the first facility in South Africa to feature the Inrange system. Owners sought a partner who would help create a boutique entertainment suite to draw players of all skill levels to its premium location. Now, visitors will be able to play engaging games or capture critical data during practice sessions from any of the club’s 40 bays, using the Inrange App.

For a premium gaming experience, the range will also include select bays fitted with gallery touchscreen TVs and the company’s multiplayer-focused Inrange+ package.

“I think the family atmosphere at the range is crucial. This particular technology is going to be enjoyable for everybody from beginner to professional,” says Randpark CEO Francois Swart. “Having this kind of new technology modernizing the driving range as part of the Randpark brand just shows that we’re keeping up with the trends.”

The Inrange system consists of radar sensors placed in and around a driving range that create a series of interlocking radar fields. Once calibrated, they can determine the origin of each ball (which bay it was hit from), and track its entire flight, no matter how long or short, in real time. The resulting data is relayed either to an in-bay touchscreen or via the cloud to the Inrange app on the player’s mobile device.

Easily covering a range of 100 bays or more, the sensors can track dozens of balls hit simultaneously, each from a different origin, and provide detailed data on speed, trajectory, path, landing point and more, to within a yard. Unlike competitor’s systems, they are impervious to all ambient conditions such as darkness, rain, mist and audible noise.

“Randpark is a very well-known and respected golf club in South Africa, and as a company’s founded in Johannesburg, we couldn’t be more thrilled to part of their wonderful facility,” said Nick Longley, Co-Founder of Inrange. “The beauty of our system is that it not only serves avid players looking to hone their skills, but is an incredible gateway to golf for novice players from all backgrounds, as we remove the anxiety associated with playing on the course.”

Inrange was founded by a group of highly respected South African engineers who used their expertise in the world of radar and radio telescopes to develop the most advanced, accurate and reliable tracking system in the world.

Beyond its advanced hardware, the company is focused on providing the best user experience possible through its interactive app and in-bay displays. The goal when developing the system was to provide golf’s newcomers an experience that would leave them hungry for more, while giving serious players a focused way to improve their handicap with every session. This is achieved through a variety of fun games enjoyable for all skill levels.

Beyond being a source of entertainment and practice for golfers, Inrange allows facilities to capture a new secondary revenue stream, as patrons naturally want to spend more time at the facility, order more food and beverages and return often with friends. With quick installation and continuous customer service, Inrange works closely with properties of all shapes and sizes to provide a custom-tailored solution for specific needs and budgets.

The company offers a variety of unique ways for facilities and customers to experience the system. A free-to-download app available through the App Store and Google Play lets users track data and play games on their smartphones at Inrange facilities either solo or with others. Inrange+ is the ultimate multiplayer experience, where bays are equipped with display monitors and seating, ideal for challenging friends and enjoying a fun day at the range.

"Cambodia's Best" Vattanac Golf Resort Opens Second Sir Nick Faldo Championship Course In Phnom Penh, Cambodia

(Scottsdale, Ariz.)
– Troon, the leader in club management, development, and marketing, is delighted to announce the opening of the second Sir Nick Faldo designed Championship Course at Vattanac Golf Resort in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The newly opened ‘West Course’ will also be managed by Troon International, the international operating division of Troon, who were brought in by Mr. Vattanac six months ago.

The opening of the “West Course” aligns with the “East Course” being recognized as ‘Cambodia’s Best Golf Course’ at the recent World Golf Awards. The World Golf Awards celebrates and rewards excellence in golf and is part of the World Travel Awards. The “East Course”, with imposing character and striking identity, has received high praise from golfers the world over. Set within captivating natural surroundings, the “East” is a strategic golf course that utilizes dramatic water features, creative bunkering and various forms of native fauna to challenge golfers of all levels.

Sir Nick Faldo has designed both Championship Courses at Vattanac Golf Resort and the new “West Course” compliments the existing “East Course”. The two courses provide a spectacular setting around famous cultural expressions that include scale models of Khmer historical architectural sites, such as: Angkor Wat, Preah Vihear and Bayon. Positioned on the 7th hole of the new course, one statue pays heritage to King Jayavarman VII, from the Angkor period, who represents one of the most energetic reigns in Cambodian history.

The “West Course” will certainly contend with the “East Course” as not only one of the best in Cambodia, but also one of the best in Asia. The West Course has distinctive differences from the East Course, of which are defined by narrower and more undulating fairways, a variety of unique water features and testing Paspalum greens. Cultural sculptures and stunning landscaping attribute to the striking scenery of Cambodia’s newest golf course. The “West” is a rewarding test of skill for players of all levels, featuring 5 sets of tees, starting at 4,935 yards, right through to 7,249 yards.

Sir Nick Faldo heralded the opening “It’s a great moment to see the West Course now open and ready to play. The West Course complements the East Course magnificently with its fluid shaping giving the design its own identity.

“Much like the East, the West Course project focused heavily on celebrating the amazing culture in Cambodia and Vattanac Golf Resort’s surrounding environment to create the course’s truly unique character. By integrating cultural inspiration into the landscape, like the Terrace of Elephants replica statue or the Dragon Lake for example, the course has a real sense of place and its local features help to create an unforgettable experience.

“The West Course offers a slightly more intimate look and feel to the resort’s East, but just like the East it offers different strategic challenges with fairway positioning and shot choice crucial for players looking to find reward and an inviting line to the green. It certainly asks questions of golfers’ game-management, long, short, left or right from the tee can find difficulty and create a complicated hole. However, with five tee sets the course is accessible to all with something for every golfer, from the very best to the very beginner, so, importantly, enjoyment out on the course will not be hard to come by.”

Cambodia’s luxury golf resort now moves into the next phase of the integrated resort development that will soon include Night Golf and a world acclaimed Golf Academy.

Karl Whitehead, General Manager at Vattanac Golf Resort, commented: “We are extremely excited at what we are creating here, following Mr. Vattanac’s vision, and look forward to delivering a new standard of golf resort in South East Asia that will be compared to the world’s best. The Golf Academy is a key component of this project as Mr. Vattanac is extremely passionate about Growing the Game of golf in Cambodia”.

Future developments of Vattanac Golf Resort will see a state-of-the-art Clubhouse offering dining, retail and spa, complimented by a luxury hotel and residential community. "Our excitement continues to build as our vision is coming to life and we thank Troon for their expert management since we brought them on board. The West Course has received wonderful reviews from our local golfers since opening for play on the 17th October. We are extremely proud to have two Sir Nick Faldo designed Championship Courses and we look forward to continuing to develop our Golf Resort in the coming months to be ready to welcome tourists to our new golf destination”, said Sam Ang Vattanac, owner of Vattanac Golf Resort.

Mark Chapleski, President of Troon International, remarked: “Cambodia certainly has a new golf destination and we are proud to be part of this world class project. Mr. Vattanac’s passion for quality is infectious and we share his ambition to make Vattanac Golf Resort a landmark for golf, not only in the region, but worldwide. Stay tuned for phase two, that will take Vattanac Golf Resort to the next level”.

PerfectMotion Welcomes Top Instructor Jake Thurm to its Innovative AI Coaching Platform

(BOSTON, MASS.) Golf Digest Top Young Instructor Jake Thurm, Director of Instruction at Fresh Meadow Learning Center and Ruffled Feathers Golf Club (both in the Chicago area), has joined the growing roster of elite golf coaches on the PerfectMotion mobile app teaching platform. The PerfectMotion app is a uniquely-personalized golf training system that allows golfers to train anywhere, anytime, with or without a ball, while receiving expert guidance on every swing and putt.

Jake Thurm
Thurm is known for deftly incorporating the latest data and technology into his teaching, which has made him one of the rising stars in golf instruction. Thurm has worked with PGA TOUR professionals Kevin Streelman and James Hahn and is also Lead Instructor for the Midwest Region of USA Junior National Golf Team and Director of the Nike Junior Golf Camp at Fresh Meadow Golf Club in Hillside, Ill.

PerfectMotion uses proprietary artificial intelligence to track the golfer’s body motion and instantly determine their key swing issue - and then calls up professional video instruction that addresses the golfer’s specific issue to help eliminate it.

Thurm employs the PerfectMotion platform to more deeply reinforce what he sees in lessons and what data is rendered via video, launch monitor and pressure mat sensors. “The immediate body motion data that the PerfectMotion® app generates adds a deep and unique insight into my process. With the app, I can now have body measurements on every swing no matter how far away I am from the student. I’m doing more and more remote online teaching and tools like this simply make me better at my job. With a more accurate diagnosis, I’m able to give my students better guidance, resulting in faster improvement.”

After each swing, the PerfectMotion app instantly produces a MotionMap, a new and concise representation of a swing. A MotionMap includes a precise trace of the golfer’s core body motion and identifies faults in the swing. “What PerfectMotion accomplishes is basically marker-less 3D analysis of a golfer’s motion. When I tell a student they can get instant feedback on every swing and they don’t have to put on a suit to capture body motion analysis, they’re fascinated,” Thurm says. “Diagnosing what’s really wrong with someone’s swing can be a process of elimination. PerfectMotion helps expedite the teaching process by pinpointing those specific body movements that an expert instructor can use to teach more effectively.”

PerfectMotion CEO Rich Kosowsky values Thurm’s expertise, energy and rapport with his students. “Jake Thurm understands and uses bio-mechanical feedback as well as anyone in golf. To have him affiliated with PerfectMotion is an excellent validation of the power our real-time feedback and platform deliver. Having PerfectMotion in his repertoire will undoubtedly help Jake’s business and teaching, but I think we’ll learn as much from him as he learns from the app,” Kosowsky says.

Thurm delivers personalized coaching on the PerfectMotion platform. Sessions with Thurm can be booked at www.jakethurm.com/perfectmotion

“Rich Kosowsky and the team are on to something incredibly useful in golf instruction. PerfectMotion instructor and advisor Chip Beck is an extremely knowledgeable player and coach who I’ve known and trusted for 20 years through the mutual connection Dr. Jim Suttie. He understands the swing and the struggles golfers go through on their paths to improvement.”

Pizá Golf's Private Collection Offers State-of-the-Art Practice Facilities with Wellness and Togetherness

Pizá Golf’s innovative, boutique, golf designs create a personal lifestyle unlike no other

(SAN DIEGO, CA.) – Pizá Golf, recognized internationally for their innovative approach to golf course architecture which blends traditional British fundamentals with contemporary innovative designs from North America – is proud to announce that the company’s private collection continues to gain awareness and grow as the golf industry experiences a resurgence to the game.

“Our high profile clients want the best of what life can offer and that includes our functional grass sculptures. Outdoor, magnificent, multipurpose grass facilities. Complexes that can be shared with family and friends to connect with nature, socialize, play or hone in on their short game skills. Golfers, even non-golfers, can play and have fun together,” commented, Pizá.

In 2020, this award winning design captured the world’s attention with its innovative, private, practice facility called, “The Pit” -- coined after the central, revetted bunker. It is a ‘golf lounge’ practice area on the grounds of a client’s private estate. This prestigious project and its concept expanded the company and its offerings to include its private collection of golf designs.

“I know that the client had a regular putting and chipping green in mind but I don’t do regular things,” said Pizá. “Their level of trust allowed me to push my creativity and produce what I like to call a multipurpose grass sculpture.”

The flagship, “The Pit” is located in the heart of Mexico City which is a concrete jungle and the metamorphosis is extraordinary and can be done anywhere with a smaller footprint. The golf facility has five tee boxes that span up to 80 yards in distance which are positioned to reach one segmented, free form green. For different levels of play there are multiple flag positions and hazards. There are distinct shot values and angles so the quality of golf is genuine within the serene environment. It can be challenging or a relaxing experience.

“The central bunker at ‘The Pit’ is key to the entire composition as during the day you can practice all kinds of sand shots. It is a multipurpose area – family and friends can enjoy practicing shots from 80 yards in or the kids can play in the sandbox or roll around on the grass. In the evening, turn on the lights, music and the fire pit. Just lounge. What an experience! What a lifestyle!” added Pizá.

This never before seen Pizá Golf design concept is replicable and flexible, in order to adapt to its surroundings. In addition to private estate usages, this concept can be used for hotels, club houses, and restaurants.

Pizá Golf and its goal is to create the best and most original private home design for a high-profile client. They execute the design and deliver a turn-key operation to the client through supervision, quality control and project management services. The grass sculpture by Pizá Golf provides a great sense of pride and ownership as guests enjoy a game of golf, individual wellness, socializing and a touch of night life.

Wilson Introduces Tour Inspired Staff Model R Ball

(CHICAGO)
– Designed directly with Wilson Advisory Staff members and with direct feedback from the game’s best players, Wilson Sporting Goods announced their new, revolutionary Staff Model R golf ball. A true Tour-inspired ball, the Staff Model R features a first-of-its-kind raw, unpainted cover to ensure aerodynamic consistency and pure, precise ball flight to the intended target.

The Staff Model R is designed for PGA Tour professionals and low handicap players striving to carve out fairways and attack pins. The Staff Model R ball features a 4-piece maximum-velocity construction that delivers long distance and a thin urethane cover promoting exceptional spin for greenside control. The ball’s key feature is a raw unpainted cover, which provides next level precision, accuracy and reliability.

“Staff Model R is unpainted as the dimple cross-section geometry and the pattern of dimples on a golf ball are critical aerodynamic elements that affect the flight performance of the ball in terms of trajectory, distance and directional stability. These dimples are a mere 0.004-0.007 inches deep and super sensitive to the level of paint on the ball,” said Bob Thurman, Vice President Wilson Labs.

“The painting process can frequently result in balls with poor, uneven paint coverage and pooling of paint in these shallow dimples,” said Frank Simonutti, Global Director of Golf Ball Innovation.  “This can significantly affect the trajectory and the directional stability of the flight of the ball. By eliminating the paint, we were able to eliminate all of the short comings attributed to the paint process used on all golf balls.“

According to Thurman, under a black light, it is very easy to observe inconsistencies and paint pooling in the dimples. “Our internal testing* shows that tour quality balls on the market can drift offline as much as +/- 25 feet on a 200-yard 5 Iron shot. The Staff Model R ball’s urethane cover has been left completely unpainted, creating a nearly perfect aerodynamic surface that can be relied on to deliver the ball to its intended target,” concluded Thurman.

Although the removal of paint allows for ball flight to the intended target, the lack of paint protection may compromise the physical look of the ball. Given paint on golf balls is primarily for glossy appearance, UV stability and stain resistance, the Staff Model R may eventually stain and discolor during play depending on turf, weather and course conditions.

Finished with a modern Staff Model stamp, the all-new Staff Model R ball joins the award-winning Staff Model ball family, designed by and for the advanced player.

The Staff Model R ball will be available on Wilson.com and select retailers starting November 17th, 2020 for $44.99.

*Results of internal testing performed in Humboldt, TN. Driver test (105 mph) on 7/7/20, 9-iron test (84 mph) on 8/7/20 and 5-iron test (93 mph) on 8/9/20

NCAA Selects Omni La Costa Resort & Spa as first “neutral” site to Host Trio of National Championships following Gil Hanse Renovation

Reimagined Champions Course to Host Men’s, Women’s NCAAs in 2024, 2025 and 2026

(Carlsbad, Calif.) – The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees has selected Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, Southern California’s premier golf and luxury resort destination, as the host site for the 2024, 2025 and 2026 Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships. Play will be conducted on the resort’s famed Champions Course following a planned 2022 renovation by acclaimed golf course architect Gil Hanse.

The event’s debut at Omni La Costa will mark the Division I Women’s Golf Championship’s return, after a 28-year absence, to Southern California. The Division I Men’s Golf Championship was last played in the region (at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades) in 2012.

The Men’s and Women’s Championships will be contested over consecutive weeks starting in 2024, the first year each culminating national championship will be played in combination at a neutral site. While the University of Texas will serve as the official host institution for all three sets of championships, no players – outside of those teams and individuals who advance each year to the championship – will be permitted to play Omni La Costa’s Champions Course during that season.

“We are thrilled that the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will return to California in 2024,” said Connie Hurlbut, senior associate commissioner at the West Coast Conference and chair of the NCAA Division I men’s golf committee. “The collegiate golf community is excited about the opportunity to play La Costa as a neutral site for the championships and we have complete confidence that it will prove to be a unique and challenging championship experience for all.”

Touched by fresh ocean breezes and set within a captivating 400-acre Spanish Mission-style village, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, is home to 36 holes of award-winning golf on the Champions and Legends Courses along with a host of luxurious recreation and leisure amenities.

Omni La Costa boasts a rich history of stars and professional golf events. In 1965, shortly after La Costa opened, the original Dick Wilson designed course hosted the made-for-TV CBS Golf Classic. The PGA TOUR’s Tournament of Champions (later called the Mercedes Championship and the Sentry Tournament of Champions) was hosted from 1969 until 1998 with a parade of Hall of Famers, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods further cementing their winning legacies at Omni La Costa. In 1999, the WGC Andersen Consulting World Match Play Championship was played on the original course layout.

“Omni La Costa is one of 12 exceptional golf resorts within the Omni portfolio and is well known for its elevated service and amenities, including its two championship golf courses,” said Peter Strebel, president of Omni Hotels & Resorts. “Gil Hanse is a gifted architect and his redesign of the Champions Course, alongside our partnerships with PGA TOUR and PGA of America and securing the Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships, further demonstrates our commitment to world-class golf, our members, guests and clients.”

Hanse, whose growing list of high-profile design projects has pushed him to the top of his profession, is the architect of the highly anticipated, under-construction East Course at PGA Frisco (new headquarters of the PGA of America) on the grounds of the Omni PGA Frisco Resort, which was awarded the 2027 and 2034 PGA Championships and a potential future Ryder Cup. His recent work includes restorations of major championship venues like the West and East Courses at Winged Foot Golf Club (Mamaroneck, NY), The North Course at Los Angeles Country Club (Site of the 2023 US Open), the East Course at Merion Golf Club (Ardmore, PA) and original designs of The Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ohoopee Match Club (Cobbtown, GA) and the South Course at Los Angeles Country Club.

“Our team is very excited to be a part of bringing Omni La Costa's esteemed stature in American tournament golf into a new generation. Just as we did with the Olympic Course in Rio, we embrace collaborating with the NCAA on creating a course that is suitable for both top-tier men and women players as well as Omni La Costa's members and resort guests,” Hanse says. “Bob and Blake Rowling (owners of Omni Hotels & Resorts) have tremendously high golf IQs. They understand what quality golf is and what it takes to make it a reality. Their support has been invaluable and motivates us to create something special here in this excellent Southern California landscape. It's too soon to say if the characteristics will be more like a George Thomas Los Angeles Country Club, Bel Air or Riviera style or an Alister MacKenzie look, like at Valley Club of Montecito, or something else, but we're looking forward to 'solving the puzzle' out in the land.”

NCAA officials share Hanse’s optimism for a dynamic, pleasing course set up. “The renovation that La Costa has committed to with Gil Hanse will make the Champions Course outstanding on many levels for our men’s and women’s student-athletes as well as for the membership there,” said Julie Manning, executive associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Minnesota and chair of the NCAA Division I women’s golf committee. “Similar to what Gil was able to accomplish with the Brazilian Olympic course, the renovation at La Costa will provide a challenging but fair venue, with plenty of teeing grounds for both genders that will undoubtedly lead to outstanding play during each of the championships.”

The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship was first played in 1939 while the women’s tournament began its history in 1982. Past individual champions of college golf’s most prestigious title include Nicklaus, Mickelson, Woods, Ben Crenshaw, reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, Annika Sorenstam and Stacy Lewis.

Golf Pride Grips Trusted By 83% of the Field Including both the Masters Winner and the Low Amateur

(PINEHURST, N.C.)
— Golf Pride a division of power management company Eaton and an industry leader in grip innovation, today announced that it was the leading swing and putter grip brand in play at the last major of Calendar Year 2020, with over 83% of the field trusting Golf Pride grips.

All twelve players who finished in the Top 10 and ties, including the champion, played Golf Pride grips. The winner trusted Golf Pride’s flagship Tour Velvet en route to winning his second career major and first Green Jacket, as did the winner of Low Amateur. In addition, Golf Pride putter grips were chosen by more of the field than any other brand to take on the famously challenging greens at the storied course that hosted the unseasonably late last major of CY2020.

Of those players finishing in the Top 10 and ties, three played standard Tour Velvet (including the winner), three played Tour Velvet Cord, one played Tour Velvet Super Tack, four played MCC, and one chose Z-Grip Cord. An interesting side note is that of the dozen players that finished in the top 10 and ties, eight played either cord or hybrid cord models.

“The unique November timing of this major did not impact the beauty or excitement in what was an amazing finale to the 2020 season. Obviously, we are extremely pleased the winner chose Golf Pride as so many have over the years to carry him to his historic win,” said Brandon Sowell, global director of sales and marketing for Golf Pride. “We are always proud that Golf Pride is trusted by so many of the world’s best and most demanding golfers and that we continue to play a part in golf’s biggest events.”

Each week, Golf Pride is the leading grip played from tee-to-green on the PGA TOUR with an average of 80% of pros choosing Golf Pride swing grips in each event, without any paid endorsements.

Circling Raven Improves Ranking for 3rd Consecutive Year in ‘Golfweek’s Best U.S. Casino Courses”

(Worley, Idaho)
– Circling Raven Golf Club is rated No. 19 in “Golfweek’s Best U.S. Casino Courses, 2020,” marking the third straight year that the Gene Bates-designed layout has climbed in the annual rankings.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe insisted on excellence when it decided to build a golf course as an amenity for its casino resort hotel in the Idaho panhandle, mandating that the playing venue must honor its people and exceed its guests’ expectations. To that end, it committed more than 600 acres of ancestral homelands for the creation – four times more than the average amount of land used for golf designs – and directed that the course routing be as natural as possible, organically inspired by the terrain. As the Creator intended.

Obviously, Golfweek’s elite team of course raters appreciate the Tribe’s vision and execution with Circling Raven, which has first-class playing conditions and top-tier customer service. Each year, more than 850 evaluators survey more than 3,600 courses – grading each nominated course on Golfweek’s 10 strict standards of evaluation.

In an article about Circling Raven that accompanied the Best Casino Course list, Golfweek wrote:

“The earth seems to stretch out in all directions, with miles of yellow grasses stretching to the Coeur d’Alene Mountains, part of the Bitterroot Range of the Rockies. It’s a visual treat, crossing ridges between greens and tees to see the next hole framed in one of three distinct environments: woodlands, wetlands and Palouse – a geologic term involving wind-blown hills, moguls and fertile sandy soil.”

Located approximately 55 minutes from Spokane International Airport (GEG), Circling Raven measures 7,189 yards from the rear tees. Many who play Circling Raven, which includes a nationally honored retail shop and the excellent Twisted Earth restaurant with bar, claim it as an immediate member of their all-time best golf experiences.

The course and its Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel will be the host venue for the Circling Raven Championship (Aug. 23-29, 2021), a Symetra “Road to the LPGA” Tour event, which includes top women professional golfers competing to qualify for the LPGA Tour.

“The Coeur d’Alene Tribe is proud that Golfweek raters judge Circling Raven to be among the best in the country,” said Laura Penney, MBA, CDA Casino Resort Hotel CEO and a Tribal member. “We work hard to ensure that our course, resort, and all of our business enterprises honor our culture and people, and that we bring great satisfaction to our guests.”

Srixon Introduces the All-New ZX Irons

(HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.)
— SRIXON, a global leader in top quality irons, announces the launch of the new ZX Irons, state-of-the-art equipment at the cutting edge of iron design and performance. Srixon’s ZX Irons officially launch in North America on January 15, 2021.

Srixon remains at the forefront of iron design and performance, and the new ZX Irons represent the perfect combination of beauty and power.

“While the new ZX Irons are gorgeous to look down at, it’s the technology inside that’s even more exciting,” said Jeff Brunski, Vice President of Research and Development. “Hotter faces designed using AI optimization delivers more speed. Meanwhile, varying grooves throughout the iron set gives golfers consistent distance control, and forged construction helps them feel incredible at impact.”

Created with human intelligence yet perfected by the artificial kind, MainFrame is a one-of-a-kind face design that increases ball speed on every shot. Milled into the backside of every iron face, MainFrame is a variable thickness pattern made up of grooves, channels, and cavities.

After two years of learning and refining, these final faces offer greatly improved COR because they maximize flex at impact for more ball speed on every strike.

Srixon’s ZX5 irons combine pioneering ball speed technology with premium forged feel and delivers all of it in a forgiving yet workable profile that’s razor sharp at address.

Meanwhile, Srixon’s ZX7 irons provide a compact blade shape, slim topline, and narrow sole that delivers the workability, feel, and aesthetics of a world-class players iron.

Both irons offer an updated Tour V.T. Sole that glides smoothly through the turf, progressive grooves to improve consistency, and forged construction from a soft 1020 carbon steel body that absorbs vibrations for an extremely soft feel.

ZX Utility Irons are smaller and more compact than previous generations, delivering a more blade-like address profile that blends seamlessly with any set. ZX Utility Irons deliver Srixon’s MainFrame technology, along with a hollow design and multi-piece construction. All of these powerful technologies come together in a smaller profile, with all the same forgiveness that is expected from a utility iron.

Key Innovations Inside ZX Irons:

- MainFrame – A milled pattern on the backside of each ZX5 Iron face optimizes COR for more ball speed and more distance on every shot.

- Tour Cavity – Mass repositioned to ZX7’s sweet spot and perimeter provide a remarkably soft feel at impact and increased workability.

- Progressive Grooves – Grooves in the 8i through PW on the ZX5 and ZX7 irons are sharper, narrower, and deeper for more spin and stopping power on approach shots into the green.

- Tour V.T. Sole – V-Shaped soles glide smoothly through the turf, while the ZX5 and ZX7 irons also feature the resurgence of our popular sole notches.

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas Announces Ship Sticks Partnership

(LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic)
– Casa de Campo Resort & Villas – home to the Caribbean’s premier, luxury golf experiences, including the iconic Teeth of the Dog course – has entered into a strategic partnership with Ship Sticks for its guests when visiting the world-class golf destination.

By shipping golf clubs and luggage ahead, the unique Ship Sticks process greatly reduces travel concerns, eliminates the need to lug bulky golf travel bags through airports, wasting time at airport check-in lines or baggage claims, paying baggage fees for oversized or heavy items, and preventing loss or damage due to handling.

The Ship Sticks service will be offered through a white-label microsite directly available to Casa de Campo’s resort guests. In addition, the services may be arranged on-site at the property through the concierge and guest services teams.

“We are continually seeking ways to enrich the total resort experience for our guests, and our partnership with Ship Sticks allows for stress-free travel even before arrival here in paradise,” says Jason Kycek, senior vice-president of sales and marketing. “Ship Sticks is a top-notch, innovative company providing a much-needed service, and we’re honored to begin this exciting partnership.”

“We are thrilled to begin working with a world-class golf destination like Casa de Campo,” says Nicholas Coleman, CEO of Ship Sticks. “Our service allows for stress-free, easy travel as our customers know their clubs and luggage will be secure and waiting for them upon arrival as well as having one less concern when returning home from a vacation to long savor.”

Casa de Campo is home to a trio of lauded Pete Dye-designed layouts: Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links. Since opening in 1974, Teeth of the Dog is widely recognized as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean. Golf course architecture aficionados call Dye Fore “the most underrated course in the Caribbean.” The Links showcases Dye’s genius for creating thrilling green complexes.

Teeth of the Dog has long been a “bucket list” layout for those seeking to play one of the world's top 50 golf courses. Dye’s design hallmarks are all present: railroad ties, vast waste areas, peninsula greens and tees, hand-sculpted putting surfaces, and a unique assortment of pot bunkers. “The Heaven 7” oceanfront holes are astoundingly beautiful, causing Dye to famously quip: “I created 11 holes, and God created seven.”

Casa de Campo also showcases a world-class Golf Learning Center. Highlighted by Trackman and BODITRAK technology, it features two indoor hitting bays for rapid game improvement, year-round training, individual and group golf lessons and schools, and expert club-fitting and repair. Residing on 21 acres of “pure grass,” the PGA TOUR-quality facility also showcases practice greens for honing putting, chipping, and pitching games as well as unlimited use of the pristine outdoor range for full shots. On-course instruction is also available.
