Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club Wins Top Honor in Global Clubhouse of the Year Awards

The eagerly anticipated new clubhouse at Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club in Ajman, United Arab Emirates has won instant global recognition after being named as one of the major winners in Golf Inc. magazine’s prestigious ‘Clubhouse of the Year’ annual awards.

The stunning deluxe building, which welcomed visitors for the first time this spring, placed first in the ‘Best New Public Clubhouse’ category by the awards judging panel, and Phil Henderson, general manager of Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club, and Antonino Cardillo from the Al Zorah Development Team were was on hand to receive the top honour at this month’s Golf Inc. Strategies Summit 2025 at The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort.

Free to enter, the yearly award recognizes the best golf-course clubhouse projects of the past year from around the world. There are three categories – private, public and remodelled/renovated clubhouses – with Golf Inc’s judging panel of architects and industry professionals assessing each entry based on four criteria – efficiency, aesthetics, vision and sustainability.

Created by ANNAKA, Al Zorah’s clubhouse houses a trio of dining options alongside changing and retail facilities and will form a new focal point for both the golf club and wider local community.

Two outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and a fitness centre complement the existing golf course – which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year – to create one of the Middle East’s premier lifestyle hubs.

“(Al Zorah’s clubhouse is) well executed on all fronts,” said Lee Hyden, director of architecture at Chambers USA and a member of the judging panel. “(It shows) architectural and interior design efficiency with a cohesive and functional plan, holistic aesthetics from one function to another and realising the project vision of blending regional influences with contemporary lines, incorporating sustainable design considerations.”

The clubhouse – designed by award-winning architect Annabel Karim Kassar and ANNAKA – puts materials from the Middle East in the spotlight, with Omani marble cladding the walls. Inspired by the themes of nature and inspiration, gradually sloping walls and deep green colour palettes help the building to blend effortlessly with the rich surrounding vegetation.

Situated just 2.5km from the coast, the building’s crowning glory is an opulent rooftop bar, providing panoramic views over the acclaimed Nicklaus Design course and spectacular Arabian Gulf as well as the magnificent Al Zorah Mangrove Forest.

A new landmark for the surrounding area, the magnificent clubhouse is also a significant milestone in the development of Al Zorah City, one of the most exclusive and elaborate destinations in the UAE.

Spread over an area of 5.4 million square metres and just 40 minutes from Dubai, Al Zorah City is a thriving golf and real-estate project that offers everything that golfers, couples and families could need to live in luxury, with an 18-hole championship golf course, walkways, jogging and cycling trails, restaurants and cafes, a marina and a choice of beachfront villas and apartments among its many outstanding five-star amenities.

George Saad, CEO of the Al Zorah Development Company, said: ““The clubhouse is a testament to our long-term vision for Al Zorah and showcases our commitment to excellence, sustainability and community. It is the culmination of years of hard work, and receiving recognition of this nature makes all the effort and long hours worthwhile.

“When we started the project, we set out to build one of the outstanding clubhouses in the Middle East – something that was not only worthy of our wonderful course but also worthy of being a focal point for golf in the region.

“We feel that we have done exactly that. The feedback that we have received since we opened this year has been extremely positive, and we’re looking forward to giving members, guests and competing professionals alike the opportunity to enjoy the clubhouse’s many facilities in the months and years to come.”

The award is the latest leading industry honour that Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club, managed by Troon International, has won in the last 12 months to help cement the club’s status among the Middle East’s premier golf venues. In addition to receiving the coveted Gold Flag accolade at this year’s 59club Middle East & Africa Service Excellence Awards for the second successive year, the club earned three accolades – including Middle East’s Best Golf Course – at the 2024 World Golf Awards.

Wild Dunes Resort Sets Completion Date for $9.5M Golf Course Improvements

Tom Fazio-designed Harbor Course to reopen October 26 with reimagined greens and bunkering

Wild Dunes Resort – a Destination by Hyatt set on Isle of Palms, S.C., proudly announces the completed transformation of its iconic Tom Fazio-designed Harbor Course. With a $9.5 million investment in strategic golf-course-design enhancements and sustainable infrastructure, the project, which began in March 2025, will be complete in late October.

The Harbor Course has been a centerpiece of the Wild Dunes 36-hole golfing experience for more than four decades. The Fazio Design team, Heritage Links Golf Course Construction, and the Wild Dunes Resort Golf Course Agronomy team collaborated to rebuild and expand all 18 greens to improve the playability, variety, and unique challenge of each golf hole. Several of the course’s bunkers have been reshaped and moved to accommodate modern driving distances and playing areas have been expanded on multiple holes to enhance shot values and strategy.

All of the Harbor Course’s tee boxes have been rebuilt, leveled and, in some cases, expanded while the irrigation system has been replaced to help optimize turf conditions and water usage. Holes nearest the intercoastal waterway that runs alongside the course were raised several feet to curb flood risk and multiple golf cart bridges have also been restored.

“We’re thrilled about the enhancements to the Harbor Course which have elevated the overall experience for our players,” says Director of Golf, Jeff Minton. “When the Harbor Course reopens in late October, golfers can look forward to newly designed putting surfaces that will challenge their skills, smoother upgraded golf cart paths, and strategically placed bunkers thoughtfully integrated into the existing hole designs. When you factor in the 2015 renovation of our Links Course (Tom Fazio’s first solo golf course design and, to this day, his only seaside design), Wild Dunes Resort is now a must-play 36-hole coastal golf destination. This was the first property to bring top-tier resort golf to the Charleston area in 1980, now a whole new generation of golfers is about to fall in love with this captivating golf vacation experience.”

NOVEMBER MARKS A NEW ERA FOR THE HARBOR COURSE

Wild Dunes leadership, golf and hospitality staffs will host a grand reopening event at the Harbor Course on November 13, with tee times resuming for the renovated par-70 layout on October 26, 2025.

This project reflects the ongoing commitment of Wild Dunes Resort and its ownership partners, Lowe and Dart Interests, to continuously enhance the famed oceanfront property. By elevating its amenities, member and guest experiences, the resort reaffirms its commitment to delivering an exceptional destination for both visitors and the local community.

“We cannot wait for golfers to experience the improved character of the Harbor Course with the expanded and redesigned putting surfaces and a golf course that fits the land beautifully while presenting a playable, approachable design that can test golfers of every skill level in fun and intriguing ways,” said Fazio Design Associate Bryan Bowers. “Wild Dunes is meaningful because it represents the early era of Tom Fazio’s design career and stands the test of time with an enduring and quintessential Lowcountry golf experience.”

A REVITALIZED, EVER-IMPROVING COASTAL DESTINATION

Recognized as one of the top 10 resorts in the South by Conde Nast Traveler, the resort and its partners have invested more than $150 million in property renovations since 2021. These investments include the debut of The Sweetgrass Inn, a stunning 153-room hotel featuring a 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art spa, 30,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a 3,000-square-foot rooftop bar, and sprawling pool deck. Wild Dunes Resort expanded its sports offerings earlier in 2025 with the addition of two new tennis courts and six pickleball courts, catering to the growing demand and popularity of the sport.

What Are the Worst Golf Courses in Each State? (Colorado)

Walnut Creek Golf Preserve

It’s always difficult (and a little controversial) to single out the “worst” golf courses in a region — much depends on one’s expectations, what you pay, how far you’re willing to travel, your tolerance for rough conditions, pace of play, etc. But based on local reviews, maintenance issues, safety complaints, and general player dissatisfaction, three Colorado courses recur often in “courses to avoid” conversations. Below is a look at those, the key criticisms, and what golfers say you might want to avoid.

The Contenders

Here are three courses in Colorado that often come up in negative reviews. These aren’t necessarily “unplayable,” but they have serious flaws many golfers find hard to overlook.

Walnut Creek Golf Preserve (Westminster / Broomfield area)

Once known under the name Heritage at Westmoor, this municipal/links-style course is frequently mentioned among courses with issues. GolfPass

What people complain about:

- Poor condition: Tee boxes with little grass, fairways with cracks and burned-out spots, greens that are slow or patchy and inconsistent. Tripadvisor

- Pricing vs. value: Several players feel green fees are too high for what the course provides in terms of condition and amenities. Tripadvisor

- Pace of play & management: On busy days, lack of marshals or enforcement of pace leads to backups and frustration. Also, lack of transparency — for instance, showing up expecting 18 holes open only to find 9 holes are playable.

- External issues: Noise from nearby planes, which impacts the playing experience, according to some reviewers. Tripadvisor

What still works:

- Some golfers argue that when conditions are good — off-season or after maintenance work — the course offers scenic value, a fair challenge, and beautiful vistas. Wanderlog

- It has some strong features (natural prairie grasses, wetlands, etc.) which, if properly maintained, could be very appealing. GolfPass

Overall, many say the experience often doesn’t live up to the cost.

Wellshire Golf Course

Wellshire Golf Course
(Denver)

A classic Donald Ross–designed public course, Wellshire gets praise for design, layout, history — but also plenty of pain points. Denver Westword

Key criticisms:

- Safety concerns: Because of narrow fairways, small greens, and close proximities, there have been multiple reports of errant balls hitting players. One reviewer claims serious injury (orbital socket broken, teeth displaced) as a result of being struck by tee shots. Denver Westword

- Maintenance lag: Some restrooms, bar areas, structural and cosmetic issues have been delayed in repair. The course is owned by the city, and budget or staffing constraints show. glendalecherrycreek.com

- Expectations vs. condition: When people go in expecting a classic, well-maintained Donald Ross layout, sometimes what they find is inconsistent greens, rough that is too thick, or amenities that are past their prime. amusements-parks.com

What’s good:

- The layout is solid; many enjoy the design, the challenge. thednvr.com

- Value is often cited as good (especially for Denver municipal courses) when everything is working. GolfPass

In short, Wellshire isn’t universally “bad,” but the combination of safety, maintenance, and infrastructure concerns drag its average experience down for many players.

Antler Creek Golf Course

Antler Creek Golf Course
(Falcon / Colorado Springs area)

This one often shows up in local discussions as a course that has slipped significantly. Reddit

What players complain about:

- Poor condition: Fairways, greens, tee boxes have been reported to be in terrible shape. Some reviews say it’s “the worst shape of any course I’ve ever played right now.” Reddit

- Maintenance neglect: Lack of upkeep is a common refrain. Weed growth, poor grass health, overgrown or uncared-for bunkers and rough. Reddit

- Value concerns: Players feel that what they pay doesn’t reflect what they get — bad surfaces, inconsistency, sometimes amenities not working. Reddit

What still keeps some returning:

- Some like the links-style or “long walk” feel of Antler Creek; when it's in better condition, it can be fun for those willing to accept the “rustic” experience.

- For area players, it's one of the more accessible tracks, which means convenience sometimes offsets condition for committed locals.

What Makes These “Worst”

When you look across complaints, here are the recurring themes:

- Condition vs. price: Many of these courses charge rates comparable to better-maintained ones, and the disconnect between cost and what you're getting is one of the biggest sources of frustration.

- Maintenance delays: Poor turf, patchy greens, weak irrigation or sprinkler systems, unmaintained bunkers — all factors that degrade the experience.

- Safety and fairness: Narrow fairways, small greens, proximity of holes leads to errant shots being dangerous; layout issues that may have worked historically but now feel risky when pace of play, traffic, and usage have changed.

- Management/policy issues: Transparent communications about how many holes are open, pace of play enforcement, staff responsiveness, amenities maintenance — where these break down, perception worsens.

Caveats

Many negative reviews are from certain times of year (late season, drought, winter damage), or after storms. A course might be much better in prime season.

Some courses are municipally owned or run with tight budgets, so expectations should be managed accordingly.

Someone else’s worst course might be your favorite “challenging underdog” if you enjoy ruggedness, punishing rough, or don’t mind some inconsistencies.

Owner of Kapalua Golf Pledges $750,000 to Support Maui Nonprofits

Earlier this month, the PGA announced that The Sentry, the first stop on the PGA tour, will not be played at The Plantation Course at Kapalua for the first time since 1999. The decision was made after the course’s conditions deteriorated due to a lack of irrigation water. The tournament brings an estimated $48 million in economic activity to Maui each year and hundreds of thousands of dollars in charitable donations to Maui nonprofit organizations.

Kapalua Golf owner, Mr. Tadashi Yanai, expressing his commitment to support the Maui community, pledged a total donation of $750,000 to various Maui nonprofits, including Scouting America –Aloha Council, Hale Makua Health Services, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui, Lahainaluna High School Foundation and Lahaina Junior Golf.

“Mr. Yanai has always been steadfast in his commitment to Maui,” said Governor Josh Green. “After the 2023 Maui wildfires, he led the first privately funded housing project for displaced workers and now he is stepping up again with this generous $750,000 pledge. These funds will keep vital services and programs moving forward, from healthcare to youth development. His leadership reminds us that Maui’s strength lies in the generosity and resilience of its people. We will continue working with him, Mayor Bissen and our community partners to ensure Maui’s recovery and future remain strong.”

In addition, the funds will help support The Boys & Girls Club of Maui – Lahaina, Aloha Puʻu Kukui Watershed, Hawaiʻi State Junior Golf Association/First Tee of Hawaiʻi, Hua Momona Farms, Kapalua Maui Charities, Maui Junior Golf, University of Hawaiʻi — Maui College, Maui United Way and Maui Striker Soccer Club, among others that are historically supported by The Sentry PGA Golf Tournament.

“We are deeply grateful to Mr. Yanai for this extraordinary show of generosity at a time when Maui needs it most,” said Maui Mayor Richard Bissen. “While the loss of The Sentry in 2026 is difficult, his pledge ensures that critical programs in health, education, youth sports, and community resilience will continue to thrive.”

Through this donation, Kapalua Golf / TY Management reaffirms their commitment to the Maui community.

“On behalf of Lahaina Junior Golf Association (LJGA), we extend our heartfelt mahalo to Mr. Yanai for his compassion towards our Maui community,” said LJGA President Joel Navarro. “Your generosity, specifically to LJGA, is an investment in the lives of our junior golfers and their families, many of whom continue to rebuild and find hope through the game of golf. We are also able to continue to provide opportunities that nurture education and camaraderie; values that extend far beyond the golf course and into their daily lives.”

Although The Sentry PGA tournament will not be played at Kapalua in 2026, Kapalua Golf is working hard to plan and prepare to host the tournament again in 2027.

The second best golf course in the Middle East set to add leading facilities under stewardship of Troon International

Al Mouj Golf has become the latest Troon International venue to announce a stunning new clubhouse facility in the midst of an ambitious transformation at the Oman gem.

Partnered with the international division of Troon since January 2024, Al Mouj’s signature-designed layout – widely considered one of the Middle East’s elite courses – will be matched by a region-leading clubhouse when it opens in early 2026.

The building represents a major boost to the venue’s stellar sporting offering; multiple indoor padel courts, a fully-equipped gym and a unique Toptracer driving range technology.

Meanwhile, the new investment will combine these elite sporting facilities, with well-stocked retail outlets, flexible event spaces and a restaurant managed by one of the region’s leading food and beverage franchises.

Continuing an ethos evident across Troon International’s global portfolio, the clubhouse aims to be a beacon for every guest ranging from elite athletes, casual players, complete beginners and those who just want to soak up the atmosphere.

Nasser Al Sheibani, CEO of Al Mouj Muscat, said: “We firmly believe that we have one of the region’s best golf courses, and in today’s golf industry you need incredible facilities as well, for this reason we are thrilled to be opening a clubhouse worthy of our course next year. Investing in the best possible facilities is key to elevate our member and guest experience.”

What Are the Worst Golf Courses in Each State? (California)

Chula Vista Muni

California is home to some of the most celebrated golf courses in the world, but not every track lives up to the hype. A few courses have earned a reputation for frustrating golfers with poor conditions, questionable value, and disappointing experiences. Based on player reviews and online feedback, here are three of the most criticized public golf courses in the Golden State.

Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course – Mountain (Bonita)

Located just outside San Diego, Chula Vista Municipal’s Mountain course has become notorious for its conditioning issues. Golfers frequently describe the fairways as patchy or barren, with “little to no grass” in spots. Sand traps are often just dirt, and greens can be uneven or neglected. One reviewer summed it up bluntly: “Even if it were free, it wouldn’t feel worth it.”

Indian Palms CC & Resort

Indian Palms Country Club & Resort
(Indio)

In the heart of the Coachella Valley, Indian Palms has disappointed players looking for a reliable desert golf experience. Guests complain that the course feels like it needs a full-scale renovation, pointing to damaged fairways and inconsistent greens. Despite its resort setting, the conditions often don’t justify the green fees. One golfer called it “one of the worst golf courses we have played.”

Dos Osos GC

Dos Osos Golf Club (Formerly Eagle Crest Golf Club)
(Escondido)

Tucked in the hills of North San Diego County, Dos Osos Golf Club offers a scenic drive but little reward once players arrive. Reviews cite fairways riddled with weeds, dirt patches, and gopher holes, along with greens marked by pits and bare spots. Others note that the staff experience doesn’t make up for the on-course shortcomings. As one visitor put it: “Once is more than enough.”

Bottom Line

For every Torrey Pines or Pebble Beach, there are public tracks across California that leave golfers shaking their heads. Chula Vista Municipal, Indian Palms, and Dos Osos are three that come up most often in negative reviews, showing that not every round in California guarantees sunshine and satisfaction.

Tour Edge Launches First-Ever Golf Balls

Proven Performance Expands Beyond Clubs: Introducing Exotics Golf Balls

Tour Edge Golf, a leader in high-performance golf equipment for nearly 40 years, is entering a bold new era with the launch of its first-ever golf balls.

Headlining this historic debut is the Exotics golf ball, a premium three-piece cast urethane design engineered to deliver explosive distance, piercing ball flight, pinpoint control, and exceptional greenside spin.

The Exotics golf ball will be available at retailers nationwide and at TourEdge.com beginning October 28, 2025, with a suggested retail price of $39.99 per dozen.

“This is a monumental step for Tour Edge,” said David Glod, CEO and Founder of Tour Edge. “After four decades of relentless innovation in golf clubs and bags, we’re applying the same commitment to performance and quality to golf balls. The Exotics ball reflects everything our brand stands for, including tour-level engineering, meticulous testing, and premium materials to meet golfers’ demands.”

The launch also introduces Tour Edge’s refreshed logo and brand identity, setting the tone for the company’s future direction.

“People are going to ask, ‘Why Tour Edge, and why now?’” said President Tim Clarke, who has over two decades of experience driving golf ball strategy, from development to successful market launches. “This launch gives our loyal customers another way to benefit from Tour Edge, and creates an exciting first touchpoint for other golfers to experience our performance.”

Complete Tee-to-Green Performance

Designed for serious players, the Exotics golf ball offers full-spectrum performance from tee to green. At its core, the high-speed KinetiCore engine delivers explosive distance, low long-game spin, and penetrating stability, particularly in windy conditions.

“The design brief started with a clear goal: deliver superior performance in the wind without sacrificing spin around the greens,” said Matt Neeley, VP of Research & Development. “Better players are increasingly looking for stability and consistency in challenging conditions, and we set out to solve that.”

The Exotics golf ball underwent a rigorous evaluation process across prototypes to ensure tour-level performance in every playing condition, which helped identify the necessary construction, compression, and dimple pattern. Testing included advanced robot analysis, comprehensive player testing across the low- to mid-handicap spectrum, as well as valuable input from Tour Edge professional staff players.

The advanced 318-dimple pattern enhances aerodynamics and consistency, delivering the optimized trajectory, tour-level spin, and flight control elite players demand. Testing confirms both optimal spin rates and descent angles rival the category’s leaders.

A fast, soft ionomer mantle enhances control on approach shots, while the ultra-thin cast urethane cover provides exceptional feel and short-game spin for confident scoring around the green.

“The numbers we’re seeing are remarkable,” added Glod. “What stands out in testing is control in the wind. The results confirm we’ve engineered something truly special and I’m excited to see initial reactions from golfers everywhere.”

- Construction: 3-piece cast urethane
- Trajectory: Mid-High
- Long Game Spin: Low
- Approach Spin: High
- Greenside Spin: High
- Feel: Responsive
- Retail Price: $39.99 | Available October 28, 2025

Shura Links Opens for Play in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s First Island Golf Course Sets a New Benchmark for Luxury, Sustainability, and World-Class Play

Shura Links, the first island golf course in Saudi Arabia and the centerpiece of an unparalleled luxury resort development on the Red Sea, has opened.

Designed by acclaimed architect Brian Curley and managed by Golf Saudi, the pioneering project reflects the Kingdom’s robust investment in golf and its growing reputation as a global destination for the game.

“Shura Links offers 18 unique and visually stunning holes in a beautiful island environment that will redefine golf in the region,” Curley said. “Our goal was to create a course that is both strategic and forgiving, where golfers can enjoy the ground game, and be inspired by the seaside setting.”

A distinctive island backdrop

Stitched through native mangroves and bright-white dunes, with long stretches that hug the Red Sea shoreline, Shura Links was conceived to blend seamlessly into its unique surrounds with a layout that welcomes all levels of play.  A par 72, it measures 7,400 yards from its championship tees, with the option to extend beyond 7,700 yards for professional and top-flight amateur competitions. But the flexibility of its design—replete with wide playing corridors, fast,  rolling conditions, and open approaches that invite varied angles of attack and ground-game options in windy conditions—makes for a fair and compelling test for elite and everyday golfers alike.

Greens are large and richly contoured, with backstops, bowls, feeder slopes and run-offs that are meant to strike a balance between shot-making challenge and user-friendly playability. While the gentle terrain allows for easy walking, the firm surfaces are also well-suited for carts.

Bold bunkering is another of the layout’s defining features, at once strategic and visually striking. Many of the sandy areas are hard-packed expanses that allow for relatively easy recovery, while the formal bunkering has transitional outer edges with irregular lines, in keeping with the naturalistic design theme. Irregular turf lines mirror that aesthetic, too.

Additional golf highlights

- Signature holes include dune-framed par-3s (Nos. 6 and 15) that play directly toward the Red Sea and a dramatic, driveable par-4 (No. 16) for late-round risk-reward.

- Two-acre, family-friendly putting course, adjacent to the clubhouse and suited to all ages and abilities

- Expansive grass practice range, putting green and short-game area, with premium Callaway balls.

- Two returning nines, plus tailed green-fee options for 9 or 18-holes

- Professional golf instruction for individuals, families and groups, led by onsite PGA-qualified teachers.

- A stunning modernist clubhouse, designed by Foster + Partners, with curated golf retail and dining options both casual and refined on an indoor terrace or by the pool.

An environmental showcase

Built with sustainability at its core, Shura Links has just 70 acres of irrigated turf, all of it Platinum TE Paspalum, a drought-and salt-tolerant grass with superior appearance, playability and maintenance benefits across all surfaces. The Toro irrigation system is designed for maximum water efficiency, while the landscaping— also by Curley-Wagner Design—integrates desert flora, palms, and flowering trees across sweeping white sand expanses. The significant construction  effort was handled in-house by Red Sea Global’s Richard Haas, contributing  substantially to the overall design-build process.

The design philosophy emphasizes playability without extreme punishment, creating a visually alluring, accessible course.

“Too many desert courses penalize golfers with lost balls in thick vegetation of non-turf areas,” Curley said. “Here, the course is framed by brilliant white sand and open expanses punctuated with bursts of natural dunes vegetation that inspire creativity while keeping the game moving.”

Part of a World-Class Destination

Located just 30 minutes from Red Sea International Airport via a 3.5-kilometer causeway, Shura Links anchors a destination that will feature 11 luxury hotels, including Four Seasons, Raffles, Rosewood and Jumeirah, all of which will open in the coming month. Villas and resort architecture have been woven into the dune landscape, creating a luxurious island-beach environment in a climate where year-round temperatures average 90 degrees.

“Having designed 20 courses for the massive Mission Hills Golf Club in China, I am certainly no stranger to bold and imaginative projects,” Curley said. “The effort here by Red Sea Global is groundbreaking and monumental and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Shura Links has been skillfully designed to host both resort guests and professional tournaments, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s growing role on the global golf stage.

“Shura Links sets a new benchmark for the game of golf in the region,” said John Pagano, Group CEO of Red Sea Global. “It’s more than just a course – it’s a place to connect, challenge yourself and experience the full beauty of The Red Sea. This is another proud milestone in our mission to reshape global tourism through sustainability and design, and a significant step in building Red Sea Global’s diverse sports portfolio, aligning perfectly with Vision 2030’s goal of establishing Saudi Arabia as a premier global sporting destination.”

Paul Azinger Rips Bethpage Black, Calls Ryder Cup Venue a “Mistake”

Bethpage Black, the storied Long Island course set to host the 2025 Ryder Cup, is drawing fire from a notable critic: former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger.

Azinger, who led the U.S. to victory at Valhalla in 2008, didn’t hold back during an appearance on Trey Wingo’s Straight Facts Homie! podcast. He said he “couldn’t stand” Bethpage Black and argued that the PGA of America made a “mistake” in selecting it as the host course.

“This golf course, I’m like you. I couldn’t stand it,” Azinger told Wingo, recalling his missed cut at the 2002 U.S. Open. “I think I was 18 over for two days. The media loved it because it was a public course. What are you gonna do if they play the U.S. Open there every five years? I guess I’ll take every fifth year off.”

Azinger’s complaints went beyond personal frustration. He criticized the design itself, calling out awkward angles and blind shots. “I really don’t like Bethpage Black. There’s a lot of awkward angles, downhill tee shots to fairways that angle away, uphill second shots where you can’t see the landing area. It’s just hard and you cannot fluke your way around there,” he said.

More concerning to Azinger is what he sees as a lack of home-course advantage for the American side. “We don’t know the course,” he said. “I think one of the biggest mistakes the American Ryder Cup team or the PGA of America always seems to make is going to courses we’re not familiar with.”

That take runs counter to some of the current U.S. team’s experience. Captain Keegan Bradley played Bethpage regularly during his college days, and Cameron Young, a New York native, won the 2017 New York State Open there. Young even called it “a straight-forward, big-boy golf course” earlier this summer.

Still, Azinger doubled down. “I guarantee you they don’t love it either. Me and you don’t love it. They don’t love it,” he told Wingo.

He also questioned whether Captain Bradley will have any influence over course setup, a factor Azinger said Europe has historically used to its advantage. And he raised concerns about the New York fans: “If the U.S. gets off to a bad start, even the crowd can be volatile there. That’s why I told Keegan right out of the gate, buddy, you gotta win the crowd.”

Despite the criticism, Azinger expressed faith in the U.S. team’s preparation, especially after what he described as being “out-prepared” in Italy in 2023. “There’s no shortcut to success,” he said. “We have the 12 best Americans, and they just have to out-prepare the Europeans, in a nutshell.”

Azinger closed the interview with advice for Bradley: skip the motivational videos. “I wouldn’t play videos of people like Michael Jordan or the President wishing them luck. That just makes you want to throw up,” he said. “It didn’t help me. It made me more nervous.”

The 2025 Ryder Cup begins Friday, September 26 at Bethpage Black.

Deerwood Country Club Plans Major Golf Course Redesign for 2026

Deerwood Country Club in South Jacksonville will undergo a year-long redesign of its 65-year-old golf course, closing in October 2026 and reopening in October 2027. The equity member-owned club spans more than 180 acres, with the original course designed by George Cobb.

Ahead of the renovation, a new six-hole short course called The Approach will debut, offering members a more casual and social way to enjoy the game. The project will be constructed by Jacksonville-based MacCurrach Golf Construction and will include upgraded irrigation and drainage systems.

The redesign of the main course will feature dramatic updates, highlighted by a shared double-green complex for the par-3 12th and par-4 14th holes. Architect Erik Larsen of Larsen Golf, who has designed more than 100 courses worldwide and previously served as Arnold Palmer’s project architect, is leading the project. His design includes large, strategically placed white-sand bunkers, a swale on the 12th hole, and multiple risk-reward opportunities such as a drivable par-4 at the 11th and a par-5 at the 10th wrapping around the lake. The course will stretch to 7,350 yards.

Deerwood’s enhancements continue a trend among Jacksonville-area clubs. Glen Kernan Club reopened earlier this year after a two-year renovation that included a new clubhouse, while Jacksonville Golf and Country Club will close in late 2027 for course and facility upgrades.

Deerwood has already invested in numerous member amenities since 2022, including a resort-style pool, expanded fitness and wellness complex, pickleball courts, upgraded locker rooms, and new dining options such as 1960, a family restaurant honoring the club’s founding year.

The course, once host to the PGA Tour’s Greater Jacksonville Open between 1967 and 1975, will provide reciprocal playing privileges at other area clubs during the closure.
