Sentosa Golf Club Crowned ‘World’s Best Golf Club’ at the 6th annual World Golf Awards

(Sentosa Island, Singapore) — Sentosa Golf Club, home to Singapore’s iconic Serapong and New Tanjong golf courses, has further underlined its position as a world-class destination by claiming top spot as the ‘World’s Best Golf Club’ at this year’s World Golf Awards.

Beating fierce competition from a number of other famous golf clubs around the world, the award recognises the central role Sentosa Golf Club has played in strengthening Singapore’s position as a hub for international tourism, showcasing the city’s worldwide appeal and growing the game as a vital sporting facility.

The newly crowned ‘World’s Best Golf Club’ has had an unprecedented amount of success recently, hosting no fewer than six globally televised golf events in just over 12 months – two SMBC Singapore Open’s, two HSBC Women’s World Championships, along with the Men’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship.  This is an achievement unmatched by any other golf club in the world.

The ‘World’s Best Golf Club’ award was judged by an internal panel of experts who considered a broad spectrum of factors that combine to create a club of outstanding excellence.

Sentosa was also recognised for the quality of the club as a whole, including the standard of both course designs, a pioneering commitment to environmental sustainability through its #KeepItGreen campaign, the staging of the high profile professional and amateur events, and overall ability to present two championship golf courses in first class condition all year round.

The presentation was made in front of the golf industry’s biggest names in Abu Dhabi, as the World Golf Awards introduced the new award to recognise one club in the world for its outstanding quality across the board.

Overall, it was a hugely successful night at the World Golf Awards for Sentosa Golf Club with its very own Serapong Course claiming the title of ‘Singapore’s Best Golf Course’ for the second year in a row, rounding off another great year for a club at the very top of its game. Other notable golf courses picking up awards included 2018 Open Championship venue, Carnoustie Golf Links and 2017 U.S. Open Venue, Erin Hills.

On Sentosa Golf Club receiving the awards, Sentosa Golf Club General Manager and Director of Agronomy Mr Andrew Johnston commented: “It is a huge honour for Sentosa to be recognised by The World Golf Awards as the ‘World’s Best Golf Club’ and once again as ‘Singapore’s Best Golf Course’. By being bestowed with such honours, it is testament to all the hard work and dedication that goes into achieving the club’s standards and maintaining two championship courses that impress both professional and amateur players from all around the world. It is achievements like this that allow Sentosa Golf Club to continually develop year on year and remain at the very top. We are very grateful to the World Golf Awards for humbling us with such an accolade.”

Singapore Tourism Board Chairman Mr Chaly Mah said: “Our primary goal is to ensure Singapore remains an attractive business and leisure destination where possibilities can be realised and passion made possible. From F1 to the great golf tournaments Sentosa hosts, it’s events like these that help to put Singapore in the spotlight and enhance our tourism products. And to have Sentosa Golf Club recognised with such a prestigious accolade is further recognition for this great city. Thank you to all the team at Sentosa Golf Club for their passion and hard work, which has not only made us proud, but can inspire us to reach for extraordinary new heights in trying to achieve our goals.”

Sentosa Development Corporation Chairman Mr Bob Tan said: “It is an honour for Sentosa Golf Club to receive two awards at this year’s World Golf Awards. We are very proud of the dedicated and hardworking team of passionate people who continually strive to make our golf courses amongst the best in the world. In doing so, Sentosa’s position within the top global tourist destinations, for both local and overseas visitors, is appreciably enhanced. Congratulations and well done Sentosa Golf Club.”

Singapore Golf Association President Mr Ross Tan said: “As the national governing body of golf here in Singapore, we are privileged to have the support of Sentosa Golf Club to help us develop and nurture the talent of local golfers for the future. Through a dedicated sponsorship programme, by allowing our junior golfers access to the best practice facilities Asia has to offer, as well as two championship golf courses in tournament ready conditions, Sentosa Golf Club is helping us give local golfers the best possible chance to compete on the world stage. It is no surprise to us that they have been recognised with these awards, given how committed they are to promote and develop the sport in Singapore, and all the hard-working team at Sentosa must take a lot of credit for the latest accolades.”

R&A Asia Pacific Director Mr Dominic Wall said: “We have a strong association and partnership with Sentosa Golf Club and Singapore. As our Asia Pacific HQ it plays a key role in our efforts to support the development of golf, which is a specific aim of ours both in Singapore and throughout the region.  Through The Open Qualifying Series at the SMBC Singapore Open, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific – events hosted on Sentosa’s courses, we’ve seen Asian players benefit from such platforms to play in major championships and experience what it feels like to rub shoulders with the world’s best in tournaments such as The Open,  Masters and AIG Women's British Open. Receiving an accolade of this nature is an acknowledgement that the club deserves simply for its commitment to grow the game.”

This year the Serapong Course once again played host to the SMBC Singapore Open, which was won by Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond. Next year’s tournament will return in January (16th – 19th) and is set to be one of the most memorable to date, with all three current Olympic medallists, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar, all confirmed to attend.

The Serapong Course was designed by the world-famous golf course design firm Golf Plan and Ronald Fream, and was opened in 1982. Since then, the layout of the course has been re-altered by the Bates Golf Design Group and was the assignment of golf course architect and the club’s current General Manager, Andrew Johnston. Today, its trademark contours, extended stone-lined lakes and the breath-taking Singapore harbour backdrop, make for an exquisite game that means the course is currently ranked in Golf Digest’s ‘World’s Greatest Golf Courses’. The New Tanjong was also recently named by Golf Digest as the second-best golf course in Singapore, behind the Serapong at No. 1.

The World Golf Awards are voted for by leading golf tourism professionals as well as hundreds of thousands of golf consumers worldwide, serving to recognise and celebrate commitment to excellence in golf tourism.

2020 Brings New Incentives for Players, Symetra ‘Road to the LPGA’ Tour Event

(Worley, Idaho) — Circling Raven Golf Club – the acclaimed amenity of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel – concluded an extraordinarily successful 15th Anniversary season this week, a year marked with honors, robust financial performance, and significant announcements for 2020.

Located in the Idaho Panhandle near Spokane (WA), Circling Raven closed the year with increases across virtually every business category. Golf rounds played rose by 18% over 2018, Retail Sales by 18%, Stay-and-Play packages by 15%, Total Revenues by 8%, and Green Fees’ Revenue by 6%. Factoring in Total Maintenance expenses and Golf Operations Income reveals an overall financial improvement of 18% relative to last year.

“Ensuring our guests value our product and providing them with deeply satisfying experiences while operating profitably is our mandate,” said Laura Stensgar, a Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel executive. “That we accomplished both while garnering multiple accolades reinforces that we’re on point strategically, and it inspires us to sustain and build upon our momentum next year.”

A major announcement for 2020 has catapulted the Coeur d’Alene Tribe-owned amenity hurtling forward proactively. “Many well-known LPGA players graduated to that elite tour through their Symetra Tour successes, and we can’t wait to see these incredibly talented women professional players shine during the Circling Raven Championship on our award-winning course,” said Stensgar. “Not only does it speak to the superb quality of our first-class golf course, but these women are role models who motivate young people to take up the game.”

Both the golf course and the resort garnered distinction this year. Golfweek ranked Circling Raven the No. 1 public course in Idaho through its “America’s Best Courses You Can Play by State” annual compendium; and Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel was named “Tribal Destination of the Year” at the American Indian Tourism Conference, for its Cultural Tourism Program.

A multi-million-dollar casino renovation was completed last spring helped draw drew more visitors, including a significant number of stay and play golfers.

“Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s mission is to improve the quality of life for our members through operating successful enterprises while maintaining our cultural integrity and traditions,” said Stensgar. “Circling Raven, which was named for one of our greatest leaders, and Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel. exemplify our commitment.”

Desert Mountain Sets the Trend with Diversity of Home Product, Membership

Younger Members Seek Active, Secure Lifestyle in Upscale Arizona Community

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – There’s change in the air at Desert Mountain this fall, where an increase in new members and real estate sales exhibits a downward trend – a youth movement.

Entering fourth quarter 2019 there are a record number of homes under construction, while resales are robust. The 7,600-square-foot “Hidden Canyon Retreat” at Desert Mountain was recently sold by Tami Henderson of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Realty international for $9.3 million, the highest overall priced home in the community this year.  The buyers, both under 50, were attracted by the community’s active lifestyle, abundance of activities options, and welcoming, inclusive environment.

“People are staying active longer and want to find communities where they can remain physically fit and engaged long into adulthood,” Henderson observed. “Yes, Desert Mountain offers exceptional golf, but it's the additional amenities, such as the many dining options, the expansive Sonoran Fitness Center and Spa, miles of hiking trails, racquet sports and other recreational pursuits, that set it apart.”

Already this year, Desert Mountain has surpassed their all-time record for custom home sales volume, nearing $200 million year-to-date. In the past six months, the community has welcomed 90 new members, with 85% of membership sales tied to home purchases. Incoming members and home buyers have come from within Arizona, throughout the West Coast, and the Midwest, including a large contingent from Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

According to Nicole Forbes, Director of Membership Sales, the perception of Desert Mountain as retirement community is no longer valid. “More than 500 of our members are under 55,” she explained, “and are a combination of families and empty nesters.”

Many of these new members are taking advantage of opportunities such as the Junior Legacy membership. As a result, the average age at Desert Mountain keeps getting younger: The average age of new members is 55, many with children. In fact, Desert Mountain launched a “double nickel” club that offers fun, social activities for parents (cocktail parties, bocce ball), along with concurrent children’s programs, bringing younger, family-centric members to meet one another, while their children bond, too.

Not only are the ages lower at Desert Mountain, so are the temperatures, which average 5-10 degrees cooler than downtown Phoenix and even Scottsdale. As the Valley of the Sun has expanded, it has grown toward Desert Mountain. Pima and 101 are only 15 minutes away, and the community is minutes from grocery stores, retail complexes, and medical offices.

“We’re finding more people looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle. They’re seeking a community with a vacation environment that can become their primary home,” Forbes added. “People are buying a lifestyle and with Desert Mountain’s full slate of amenities, they’re finding an ideal fit.”

The options for different types of homes was enhanced with the recently unveiled Seven Desert Mountain residential enclave. Brand new models are now open. Distinctive home designs are available from three select luxury builders: Cullum Homes, Camelot Homes and Family Development. Each home incorporates the highest level of craftsmanship, energy-efficient building methods, and “smart home” technology. Ranging from 2,300-to 6,500-square-foot residences, options include single-story and two-story floor plans, two to four bedrooms, and 2.5 to 4.5 baths, priced from $1.4 to $5 million. All but three of the homesites sit directly on the engaging new 18-hole, par-54 championship golf course, aptly named No. 7 at Desert Mountain.

Another draw has been the recent planting of new turf on four of Desert Mountain’s six Jack Nicklaus Signature Courses—grass that allows year-round play no matter the weather conditions. Couple the numerous golf options with The Jim Flick Golf Performance Center, one of the most advanced teaching facilities in the country, and all the necessary ingredients for learning, mastery, and lifetime enjoyment of the game are available in one place.

Tiger Trusts Bridgestone Golf Engineering On Journey To Most Ever Career PGA TOUR Wins

The World’s Most Popular Player Rode His Bridgestone Tour B XS Ball to Victory at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan to Tie Sam Snead’s 82 PGA TOUR Victories for the Most Ever

(COVINGTON, GA) — Tiger Woods authored another page in the annals of golf history this weekend, as he used his Bridgestone TOUR B XS ball to earn his 82nd PGA TOUR victory, tying him with Sam Snead for the most all-time, at the TOUR’s first ever official event to be contested in Japan.  Remarkably, Woods’ win at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP means he’s achieved his 82 wins in 66 fewer starts than it took Snead. Woods’ first win of the new season also gives Bridgestone its first of the 2019-20 wraparound schedule - as the most efficient TOUR Team in golf looks to continue the momentum that it achieved last season.

Woods overcame a bogey-bogey-bogey start to open the tournament, recording an astonishing 19-under par final score, winning by three shots with the Bridgestone TOUR B XS. Woods made 27 birdies for the week to propel him to his 8th ever season-opening victory and his first title ever in Japan – marking the 7th different country in which he’s won. The win also marks the 19th season in Woods’ illustrious career in which he has won at least one official PGA TOUR event.

“82 PGA TOUR victories in this era of deep tournament fields and incredible competition is truly a remarkable achievement, and we’re honored to have played a small part in it,” said Dan Murphy, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “We are proud that Tiger played a ball made by Bridgestone in 64 of those 82 journeys to the winner’s circle, and we were with him for some of the most memorable moments along the way.  And, the fact that Tiger achieved this milestone in the home country of our parent company makes it that much sweeter.”

The Bridgestone TOUR B XS has been a constant in Tiger’s bag since he first put the ball in play in 2018, though Tiger has continued to tweak his club selection during that time. The TOUR B XS fits Tiger’s game perfectly as it offers the ideal combination of power, spin and control he demands. The TOUR B golf ball series is a result of Bridgestone’s continued commitment to providing premium tee-to-green performance to players of varying swing types. Bridgestone owns over 800 golf ball patents and fully leverages the company’s heritage of excellence in polymer science worldwide to design the industry’s most cutting-edge golf balls.

United States Holds Off Canada to Win the Inaugural Women's PGA Cup

Women’s PGA Professionals write history in Austin, Texas

(AUSTIN, TEXAS) – Team golf, whether conducted on a televised global stage or in the cozy confines of the Fazio Foothills of Austin, Texas, is the sport’s minute-by-minute drama series.

The inaugural Women’s PGA Cup had its share of compelling vignettes Saturday as a five-member United States team dug deep to hold off Canada and capture a sparkling silver trophy by four strokes, 671-675, at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa.

The 54-hole competition, the first international event for women PGA Professionals, opened with the U.S. owning a 10-stroke advantage only to see that cushion trimmed twice to four. The day closed on a sun-splashed tableau of rolling terrain with Canada and the U.S. dueling on the Foothills’ renowned final four holes.

The Canadians had played the demanding stretch well all week – just a pair of bogeys. So, any celebration for the Americans was on hold until the final fivesome had finished.

“Coming down the stretch, these players fought so hard,” said U.S. Captain Suzy Whaley, the president of the PGA of America. “They came out a little slow, but hung in there. They did their jobs. Each one of them had to stay in the process and control only what they could control. They came out victorious, but today was a win for women’s golf.”

Great Britain & Ireland finished third at 698, followed by Australia (715)  and Sweden (725). Brittany Kelly of Indianapolis, Indiana, was the anchor for the U.S., finishing the three days at 2-over-par 218 and earning her team’s collective water spray affection at the 18th green.
Canada was led by Christine Wong (222), while Alison Curdt of Reseda, California (223) provided the necessary “glue” to keep the U.S. in position to win a cup.

“We all needed we needed to stick to our game plan and forget the first two days,” said Kelly, the reigning Indiana Women’s Open Champion. “I had my moments. I always like to keep it interesting. I knew my teammates had my back. This was amazing to represent your country and play with best players in the country. I think that this will grow and would love to see more countries compete.”

On Saturday, Kelly (74), Curdt (74) and Ashley Grier of Springfield, Pennsylvania (75) were the three scorers counting in the final tabulations.

“Everybody counted this week, which was great to see,” said Whaley. “Every single player put up the numbers when they needed to do it.”

The unique format of fivesomes spread across the course kept the intensity level high, as the U.S. had a slow start on the front side.

“I wasn’t worried about making (a top-3 contribution), but was just trying to play well for the team, and be there in case they needed me,” said Grier, a PGA Assistant Professional at Overbrook Country Club in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Team included Seul-Ki Park of Billerica, Massachusetts, and reigning Women’s PGA Stroke Play Champion Joanna Coe of Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland. The PGA Assistant PGA Professional at Winchester (Massachusetts) Country Club, Park will be getting married next Sunday in Rowley, Massachusetts, had a 75, and Coe a 77.

“I told myself to stay patient,” said Park, who was keeping the U.S. margin afloat earlier in the day with a steady even-par round through 12 holes. “Today, I focused more on my tee shots and made sure that every single shot counts. Canada was really coming back, and we could feel the pressure.”

When asked to rate the week, Whaley gave it an “A-plus,” adding, “I couldn’t be prouder to have an inaugural Women’s PGA Cup and really proud to have the United States of America on the trophy.”
r
Canada’s Emma DeGroot, one of three playing Captains in the field, said that the Women’s PGA Cup “should inspire more people from individual countries.”

“Today, was really exciting,” said DeGroot, a resident of Hamilton, Ontario. “We checked the leaderboards as we went around and seeing it was getting closer and closer, and getting more and more nervous. I’m proud of the girls to have the fortitude that they did today. It was a shame we came up a few short, but I’m glad it was exciting and proud of the way we played.”

The Women’s PGA Cup tested each player in a special way, particularly Curdt, a 37-year-old licensed clinical psychologist, a PGA/LPGA Master Professional and the national Vice President of LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals.

Curdt had seen a steady round going off the rails by a triple bogey 8 on the par-5 eighth, then get a “lucky bounce off the rocks” at No. 9 to save par. She birdied No. 10, but double bogeyed the par-4 11th hole.

“I snuck into the restroom near 11 and had a  very hard talk with myself,” said Curdt. “I pulled my head out and said, ‘it isn’t about me, it’s about the team. You can do your job a little bit better.’

She bounced back with birdies on Nos. 12 and 15, and made a safe uphill pitch on the par-5 18th hole before finishing with a two-putt par. It was the insurance the U.S. needed.

“I have made self-statements in the past to pump myself up during a round,” said Curdt, “but never had I gone into a bathroom  to look into the mirror. This was super important.”

The first women’s professional team competition in Austin’s storied golf history featured a field that had a variety of personal golf journeys. Perhaps Bronte Colbert, a PGA Teaching Professional from Huntingdale Golf Course in Victoria, Australia, led the list.

Colbert’s home is in Perth, and she traveled 35 hours to arrive at the Women’s PGA Cup. Her first trip to the U.S. included a flight from Perth to Brisbane, Australia, then a seven-hour stint in the airport due to a connecting flight delay and that her bags were not checked through. “All in all, it has been a great experience,” she said.

The Women’s PGA Cup will be renewed in 2021, with the site to be announced.

United States Extends Lead Heading into the Finale of the Inaugural Women's PGA Cup

(AUSTIN, Texas) – Bundled like they were heading to the ski slopes instead of the golf course, members of the United States Team battled 25-mile-per-hour gusts and wind chill in the high-30s to carve a 10-stroke lead over Canada after Friday’s second round of the inaugural Women’s PGA Cup.

The trio of Brittany Kelly of Indianapolis, Indiana; Alison Curdt of Reseda, California and Joanna Coe of Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland, began the day with a two-stroke advantage over the Canadians, sprinting out to a combined 4-under-par through seven holes on the Fazio Foothills Course. But, the comfort zone faded on the back nine as the wind continued to pick up. The U.S. closed with a 36-hole total of 448.

The Americans were a combined 8-over-par over the final three holes, while Canada – which once trailed by 20 strokes – was 2-over-par on the same gauntlet for a 458 total.

Great Britain & Ireland was next at 474, followed by Australia (484) and Sweden (487). The first international team competition for women PGA Professionals ends Saturday at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa. The low three scorers on the respective five-member teams are counted in the final total. The U.S. Team also includes Ashley Grier of Springfield, Pennsylvania and Seul-Ki Park of Billerica, Massachusetts.

“They began so strong under brutal conditions on a golf course that is already incredibly challenging,” said U.S. Captain Suzy Whaley, the president of the PGA of America. “And, to put that (challenging weather) on top of it, I was proud of their fight. They had a lot of grit.”

Kelly, a PGA Assistant Professional at Woodland Country Club in Carmel, Indiana, followed her Thursday 69 with a hard-earned 75. Curdt, a PGA/LPGA Master Professional at Alison Curdt Golf at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, California, posted a 76, and Coe, a PGA Assistant Director of Instruction at Baltimore Country Club, had a 78.

Canada’s Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Toronto, Ontario, finished with a 75 to lead her team and keep it within striking distance of the Americans.

“I think we put together a great team effort with each of our rounds,” said Kelly, the reigning Indiana Women’s Open Champion. “It was a mind game for six hours. . . a totally different ball game today. Some short, some long, some crosswinds that were crazy. I was able to pull together a round that started well, but I didn’t finish the way I wanted. You’ve got to take your numbers on a day like today.”

Whaley, the PGA Director of Instruction at the Country Club of Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, said that any lead is tenuous.

“I want them to focus tomorrow on just doing their own job,” said Whaley. “At the end of the day, I don’t want them worrying about what will happen, just stay in the moment and stay in the process.”

Staying in the moment and following the process are familiar phrases for coaches and part of a “playbook” for Curdt, a practicing clinical psychologist and the national Vice President of the LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals Division.

“No matter what  lead you have, you want to go out and be assertive tomorrow,” said Curdt, whose 2-under-par round became unraveled on No. 12, when she couldn’t locate her tee shot and settled for a triple bogey. “I’m feeling good about the mentality of this team. We just need to forget where we are as a number on (on the scoreboard) and just do our job and have fun doing it.”

It was Curdt’s ability to shake off a bad swing that impressed Whaley.

“Alison played so amazing today, and just had bad luck on the 12th hole,” said Whaley. “She bounced back and birdied the next hole. She’s such a wonderful role model for the rest of the team.”

For Coe, the reigning PGA Women’s Stroke Play Champion, it was a day of unfinished business. She suffered a five-hole bogey stretch between Holes 7-11.

“I made it hard today,” said Coe. “Usually when conditions are hard, I play fairly well. I’m disappointed in my own back nine. It was tough, and to break 80 was probably pretty good. My short game was atrocious. You are not going to hit all the greens when things are crazy like this.”

Nathaniel Crosby Will Return to Captain 2021 USA Walker Cup Team

The 48th Match with Great Britain and Ireland will be played at Seminole Golf Club

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) named Nathaniel Crosby, of Jupiter, Fla., as the captain of the USA Team for the 2021 Walker Cup Match at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla.

Winner of the 1981 U.S. Amateur Championship, Crosby, 57, was the low amateur in the 1982 U.S. Open Championship. He was also a member of victorious USA teams in both the 1983 Walker Cup Match and the 1982 World Amateur Team Championship.

Crosby recently captained the USA Team to a 15½–10½ victory in the 2019 Match at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, in Hoylake, England. The USA overcame a 7-5 deficit after Day 1, rallying with victories in eight of the 10 Sunday singles matches to secure its largest margin of victory in an away Match since 1987.

“The 2019 Walker Cup experience was an unbelievable journey from start to finish, and I am honored to be allowed to once again guide an outstanding group of young men in 2021,” said Crosby. “As a member of the 1983 Walker Cup Team, I formed bonds and created friendships that have lasted a lifetime. I hope that I have left this year’s players with that same sense of excitement and honor, and I look forward to passing it on to our next group of players.”

The 48th Walker Cup Match is scheduled for May 8-9, 2021. It will mark the first time that the biennial team competition between 10 amateur players representing the United States and 10 amateur players representing Great Britain and Ireland will be held in the spring on U.S. soil.

“Nathaniel’s previous Walker Cup experience and guidance proved to be the right mix to lead the 2019 team to victory,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “Our players experienced life lessons from a true gentleman and competitor and we are excited to have him lead the team again at Seminole.”

Born in Hillsborough, Calif., Crosby is the son of the late legendary American singer and entertainer Bing Crosby, who introduced him to golf. Nathaniel’s godfather is World Golf Hall of Fame member Jack Burke Jr., a Masters and PGA champion who served as captain of two USA Ryder Cup Teams and is a founder of Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas, which will serve as the host site for the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open.

Crosby won the 1981 U.S. Amateur at age 19 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., defeating Brian Lindley in 37 holes despite being 4 down with 10 holes to play. Crosby’s 20-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole decided the longest final in 31 years.

He followed that victory with a win in the 1982 Porter Cup and was the low amateur in the 1982 U.S. Open, finishing 59th at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Crosby also earned co-medalist honors in the 1979 U.S. Junior Amateur at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C. In the USA’s 1983 Walker Cup victory at Hoylake, Crosby compiled a 1-1 record, losing a singles match to A. Philip Parkin, 6 and 4, and winning a foursomes match with William Hoffer.

In 1982, Crosby represented the winning USA Team in the World Amateur Team Championship at Lausanne (Switzerland) Golf Club along with future fellow Walker Cup captains Jim Holtgrieve, Bob Lewis and five-time USGA champion Jay Sigel. Crosby’s final-round 68 helped the USA post a seven-stroke victory over Japan and Sweden. The USA Team was captained by the late Frank “Sandy” Tatum, a past USGA president.

Crosby, who played professionally in the U.S. and Europe, regained his amateur status in 1994. He has competed in seven USGA championships, including four U.S. Amateurs.

In his business life, Crosby serves as chairman of AppleTree Golf Society, a network of small travel societies that are tied to rank-worthy golf clubs in vacation and second-home destinations. He has also been a partner and key executive of three golf equipment companies – Toney Penna, The Nicklaus Equipment Company and Orlimar Golf – all of which experienced significant growth under his direction.

Crosby, who turns 58 on Oct. 29, graduated from the University of Miami in 1984 with a degree in politics and public administration. He was inducted into the school’s sports hall of fame in 2005.

He is married to Sheila (Biggs) and is the father of sons Nathaniel Jr., 29; and Brendan, 27; daughters Bridget, 25; and Claire, 23; and stepdaughters Turner, 28; and Courtney, 26.

Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee Reopens

Jack Nicklaus Ushers In New Era for Award-Winning Golf Course

(Greensboro, Ga.) — Following an 18-month total renovation, Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee has re-opened. The completely rebuilt, modernized, and reconditioned version of the 1992 original is a visually breathtaking 18 holes of championship golf along the Lake Oconee shoreline that looks almost exactly the way Jack Nicklaus first designed it—but better.

“’Spectacular’ is a pretty good word for the golf course,” said Nicklaus, the living legend who devoted considerable time and attention to taking Great Waters back to the future. “We created a little more of an exciting golf course with more variety, a golf course that is really strong again.”

Working within the guidelines of the original routing and strategy, the Nicklaus Design team rebuilt Great Waters from beneath the ground up, including new drainage and irrigation systems, as well as updated bunker designs that are a major part of the modern infrastructure.

“Every golf course has a life cycle, like a car,” said Chad Goetz, the Nicklaus Design associate who oversaw the Great Waters project. “Things wear out and things change a lot in 30 years. Technically, we rebuilt the golf course. It is the same golf course, but now it is really polished.”

Extensive tree clearing took place to reduce shade and improve overall turf quality. This also allowed for wider fairways (Zeon zoysia) and rough (TifTuf Bermuda). Greens complexes are all new and have been converted to TifEagle Bermuda, a grass that should perform better in the shade and hold color in the fall. The grasses were selected for their ability to remain in top condition year-round.

The “wow factor” is stronger than ever with the opening of lake views on the 9th, 11th, and 13th holes. For all that, the par-3 8th is the only completely remodeled hole: It now plays over or along bunkers to a more receptive green.

New back tees were added to modernize the course without moving many fairway bunkers: As a result, Great Waters now plays to 7,400 yards, which should challenge the top college players in the annual Linger Longer Invitational. A new set of forward tees—at about 4,500 yards—will increase playability, improve pace of play, and encourage all players to move forward.

“The nuts and bolts of the golf course were fantastic,” Goetz said. “We tried to distill the essence of the original golf course with a new one that accents the amazing land features that were already there.”

Great Waters has been a favorite course of both members and visitors to Reynolds Lake Oconee since it opened in 1992. The course has been highly praised and is regularly rated as the #2 course in Georgia—second only to famed Augusta National.

“The first time I went to Reynolds, I knew we had the potential to have a great golf course,” Nicklaus said. “I think we found it then, and now, more than a quarter of a century later, a wonderful golf experience remains but was in need of a little updating. It’s one of the really great pieces of property with which I have ever had the experience to work.”

Located between Atlanta and Augusta, Reynolds Lake Oconee is considered one of the country’s most diverse golf experiences, with courses designed by legendary architects: the aforementioned Great Waters by Nicklaus, The National by Tom Fazio, The Oconee by Rees Jones, The Landing, and The Preserve by Bob Cupp, as well as the Members-only Creek Club by Jim Engh.

Along with its highly-regarded golf courses, Reynolds Lake Oconee features a full range of sporting activities, with access to more than 350 miles of Lake Oconee shoreline and four marinas; shooting sports at the Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds; hiking trails; and an award-winning tennis center, together making it one of the most impressive community and golf destinations in the world.

For more information about Reynolds Lake Oconee, visit www.reynoldslakeoconee.com.  To book a reservation at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee visit www.ritzcarlton.com/reynolds.

Abendroth Golf Launches Trendy New Golf Pant for Women

Professional Joggers Fit for Women and Functional for Golf

(Boston, Mass.) – Is there a missing link in women’s golf fashion? PGA Professional Emily Farrell thinks so. Farrell, an assistant golf professional at a prominent northeastern golf club, has created a line of comfortably fitting, trendy joggers for women golfers. The company’s signature product is called the “Peggy Pant.”

“My goal is to transform the way women dress on and off the golf course. The Peggy Pant is femininely cut, high-waisted with premium performance materials that include four-way stretch, water resistant and sweat wicking, and comfortably worn for any type of weather.”

The slacks are specifically designed for golfers, including four pockets big enough for a scorecard and other golf essentials, plus a hidden side zipper pocket for a phone or small valuables.

Abendroth Golf’s founder spent eight years searching for professional apparel to wear on and off the course. Falling short on the basics, Farrell decided to launch her own line to improve women’s golf apparel offerings.

The Peggy Pant will be offered in navy and grey and is reasonably priced at $128 retail. The pants will be sold online and in golf shops around the country starting in March 2020. Discounted pre-sales are available online through Kickstarter now until October 30.

“Now, we have harnessed all the advanced stroke-saving features of the SX500 and designed the SX400 for golfers wanting a more compact version of this popular device,” continues Surman. “The graphics and interface of the SX500 and SX400 are incredibly appealing and really give you every bit of information tour pros get from their caddies to play your best golf. With the launch of the SX500 and now the more compact SX400, we believe the SX Series is the best-priced, easiest to use, and most feature-packed GPS rangefinders on the market today.”

The dynamic features of the SX400 are easy to access and to use, with a 4-inch, intuitive touch screen providing brilliant, outdoor readable graphics. A host of automated features such as auto-course selection, auto-hole advance and auto-zoom make either the SX500 or 400 almost touch free from the parking lot to the 18th green. The brilliant HD displays of the SX Series combined with HD quality course graphics, only available from SkyCaddie, provide the best views of the most-reliable information in the game to allow you to play your best golf.

The SX400 comes in a highly water-resistant, sleek and compact design that’s easy to hold and fits nicely in a cup holder of a golf cart. Boasting an exceptional battery life of over 20 hours, or more than 3 rounds, the SX400 is ready for extended playing time just like its big-brother, the SX500. Using multi-constellation navigation satellite systems, the SX400 and SX500 provide enhanced accuracy and overall better performance under tough conditions or tree cover.

The powerful processors in the SX500 and the SX400 drive SkyCaddie’s new “Dynamic HoleVue™”, which automatically re-orients the entire golf hole from your position to the green as you progress from the tee. So, in addition to SkyCaddie’s patented IntelliGreen technology, golfers can now see the entire hole from their point-of-view.

As with the SX500, the SX400 includes a host of “patented” technology and stroke-saving features developed by SkyCaddie to help its customers play golf like a Pro.

Both the SX500 and SX400 feature the new Dynamic HoleVue with IntelliPath Technology that provides the distance to target as well as every other relevant attributes of the course, along and beyond your target line, without aiming a laser. So, now without wasting time to make multiple measurements, such as with a laser, you get distances instantly to all intervening hazards, end of fairway and other shot saving information in an instant to stay focused on your game.

With the SkyCaddie SX500 or SX400, you learn quickly how far you hit each club. Customize RangeVue by entering your personal club yardages. Then as you play, you will see your club range next to the RangeVue ring on every part of the course for much improved shot-making to fairways, layups and greens. RangeVue with Club Ranges provides added confidence on every shot to avoid hazards and dial-in approach shots for more birdie putts.

SkyCaddie PinPoint will obsolete lasers by providing the ability to get distances to the pin while getting all the benefits of IntelliGreen. Simply enter pin sheet or zone information into the SkyCaddie SX500 or SX400 to get distances to the hole, front, center and back PLUS the depth and true shape green ... AND all of this information is on one screen that changes automatically based on your current position and angle of approach from anywhere on the course…whether you can see the flag or not. With the SX Series, you get more information, from more places, easier and faster and without aiming!

The SkyCaddie SX500 and SX400 also provide digital scoring options for Stroke and Stableford with handicapping and tracks total putts and fairways hit in a full nine-hole scorecard in portrait mode. Turn either of the SX Series to the left or right and the AutoView feature displays a full 9-hole Digital Scorecard instantly in landscape mode.

Wi-Fi connectivity cuts the cord to streamline application updates and allows golfers to get the latest course information on demand without connecting to a computer. Just like the SX500, the SkyCaddie SX400 comes preloaded and “ready-to-play” with over 35,000 ground-verified, error-corrected courses without the short-cuts taken by the competition. Only SkyCaddie walks each course to record thousands of points with sub-meter precision because we know that you cannot trust your club if you cannot trust your distances. Knowing and trusting critical distances lets you manage your game and eliminate those high scores from your scorecard.

More features of the SX500 and SX400 include: Shot Distance Measurement to help track how far the ball goes and help golfers to learn club distances; Target List View to give a quick list of all the targets ahead of on the hole; and Tee Box Selection, Gender Selection, Dual Green Support with a yards or meters option, Stat Tracking and a North Indicator.

As with all SkyGolf e-golf products the SkyCaddie SX Series is built around the SkyGolf 360 platform, providing unmatched wireless connectivity for golfers to upload performance data captured during their round. SkyGolf 360 allows golfers to keep all performance data regardless of whether it comes from a rangefinder, a swing sensor, a performance tracker or a launch monitor in one place rather than scattered among various competitors with incompatible platforms. A single platform is not only to the golfer’s advantage, but it is also to the advantage of a teacher, PGA Professional or reseller to be able to offer all the tools a golfer can need to improve their performance from one source with the confidence their customers are getting the very best solution.

So, whether you prefer the largest and most-brilliant display in golf with the SX500 or its new “little brother” in the more compact SX400, you can be assured of having the most-powerful rangefinder in golf from the most-trusted brand in golf, SkyCaddie.”

The SkyCaddie SX400 retails for $299.95 in the U.S. and comes with the introductory offer of a 1-year Double Eagle Worldwide Membership (a $59.95 value). After the first year, memberships start at just $30 a year.

Pueblo Bonito Resorts Recognized by Conde Nast Traveler

Four resort properties earn coveted 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards

(Los Cabos, Mexico) — The results of Conde Nast Traveler’s 32nd annual Readers’ Choice Awards - “The Best in the World”- have been announced, and four Pueblo Bonito Resort properties have been recognized for excellence.

In the “Top 20 Resorts in Western Mexico” category, a quartet of Pueblo Bonito resorts, two in Los Cabos and two in Mazatlán, appear on the prestigious list of properties. The winning resorts selected for accolades by the publication’s readers are Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort, Pueblo Bonito Mazatlán Beach Resort, and Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay Resort & Spa in Mazatlán.

In the leading position is Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, which has redefined the upscale Cabo vacation experience for couples since its debut in 2005. Fronting a magnificent 2.5-mile stretch of pristine beach and designed to showcase the unique beauty of the Baja Peninsula’s mountain-desert-ocean environment, this adults-only, all-inclusive hotel, recently expanded and refined, is a great place to relax and unwind. The hotel offers a spacious pool and hot tub, beachfront cabanas and the award-winning Armonia Spa. A new restaurant, Peninsula, features exceptional Baja cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, while the Peninsula Lounge offers expansive views of the sea, sky and sand. Guests at the hotel have exclusive access to Quivira Golf Club, which is also located within Quivira Los Cabos.

Set above the same stretch of ocean beach as Pacifica is a second award winner, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort. Opened in 2002 and the largest hotel in the company’s portfolio, this family-friendly, multi-terraced resort, located 10 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, features 749 beautifully appointed junior and executive suites. The hotel boasts an array of restaurants, a spectacular Sky Pool set high above the sea, and is home to The Market at Quivira, a gastronomic “food hall” that offers a wide range of themed eateries, from Asian and Italian to delicious wellness cuisine at Perfect Balance. The resort’s stylish new sports bar, The After at Quivira, features superb pub fare, an oceanfront terrace and after-hours entertainment.

Conde Nast Traveler’s readers also acknowledged Pueblo Bonito Mazatlán Beach Resort, a flagship property situated in the resort city’s celebrated Zona Dorada, or Golden Zone. This resort, the first in the Pueblo Bonito portfolio, is an enchanting mix of Old-World charm and modern pleasures. Cilantro’s Restaurant, recently treated to major makeover, enjoys a gorgeous beachfront location and has long been a premier Mazatlán destination for delicious seafood, international cuisine and craft cocktails served in an atmosphere of casual elegance. In addition, Pescados offers beachfront al fresco dining and presents innovative Asian-inspired dishes, including sushi, nigiri and sashimi.

The magazine’s final honoree is Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay Resort & Spa in Mazatlán. Fronting a beautiful crescent beach on the Pacific coast, this all-suite resort, the only AAA Four-Diamond resort in Mazatlán, sets the pace for excellence on Mexico’s mainland. Nestled on 20 lushly landscaped acres overlooking the sea, Emerald Bay has flowering gardens dotted with koi ponds, a top-class spa, and neoclassical architecture inspired by Old Mazatlán. Winding pathways lead from the hotel’s 378 junior and master suites to the sea, where swans, flamingos and peacocks frequent mangrove pools.  Emerald Bay is renowned for the French-inspired La Cordeliere and its legendary Champagne Sunday Brunch.

As for the publication’s awards methodology, a record 600,000 registered voters weighed in on their favorite hotels around the globe. According to Conde Nast Traveler, “Some hotel stays are utterly forgettable—decent food, standard sheets, and a middle-of-the-road location. But some, you'll remember for the rest of your life.” The magazine noted that of the nearly 10,000 hotels, resorts, and destination spas rated, barley 15 percent made the cut, a further tribute to the excellence of Pueblo Bonito Resorts.
