Amelia Island Club Breaks Ground on $10M Renovation

Pool rendering at Amelia Island Club's Ocean Clubhouse
The first phase of the Florida club’s 10-year strategic plan will expand the interior of its Ocean Clubhouse by 7,000 sq. ft., to create space for a new multi-purpose room, expanded casual dining, a second-story balcony and overlook, and an expanded poolside dining and bar area.

(RELEASE) - The Amelia Island (Fla.) Club has broken ground on a $10 million renovation and expansion of its Ocean Clubhouse with completion scheduled for Fall 2019. The member-owned club was formed in 2010 and serves approximately 1,200 members with its Ocean Clubhouse, adult and child swimming pools and large pool scape. A second clubhouse is located at the club’s Long Point property, adjacent to the club-owned private, championship 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed golf course, two expansive practice areas and a pro shop.

“We are embarking on a 10-year strategic plan designed to make us the premier family-oriented club in the region,” said David Shepler, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. “The first phase is our Ocean Clubhouse and surrounding areas. We will be increasing our clubhouse interior from 16,000 conditioned square feet to 23,000.”

The extra square footage will include a new multi-purpose room, expanded casual dining, a second-story balcony and overlook, and expanded poolside dining and bar area.

Financing for the project is being provided by member equity and a $5.5 million loan facility from Wells Fargo Bank in Jacksonville, Fla. Architects for the project are Ervin Lovett Miller, and the contractor is Sauer Incorporated also from Jacksonville. Interiors are being provided by Ansana Interior Design based in Winter Park, Fla.

Riviera CC Opens New $37M Clubhouse

Following last year’s $10 million renovation of the golf course, the new clubhouse at the Coral Gables, Fla. property includes a 6,000-sq. ft. event room that will be able to host 400 members and a two-story, 8,000-sq. ft. fitness center and aquatic complex.

Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables, Fla., recently opened its new 60,000-sq. ft., two-story “Island Classic” style clubhouse. The $37 million newly constructed building, which broke ground last year (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/riviera-cc-breaks-ground-37m-project/), features a two-story, 8,000-sq. ft. fitness center and aquatic complex.

“We are thrilled to offer our current and future members such a beautifully designed and expanded Clubhouse,” said Board President David Olazobal. “Its state-of-the-art restaurants, ballroom, pool and fitness facilities are simply spectacular.”

Riviera Country Club worked with architects and interior designers at Peacock + Lewis LLC of North Palm Beach, Fla. and Miami, Fla.-based Beauchamp Construction on the project.

The new clubhouse includes:
– A state-of-the-art, 6,000-sq. ft. event room that will be able to host 400 members
– A family-oriented 8,000-sq. ft. fitness center
– A 2,500-sq. ft. Family Grille dining room
– A large pool deck and adjacent recreation areas
– An aquatic program complex, including a 25-meter lap pool and family pool
– Wrap-around terraces with views to the newly renovated golf course, and
– A new ceremonial entrance.

In January of 2016, the Riviera Country Club reopened its golf course after completing its most ambitious course renovation to date (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/riviera-cc-unveils-8m-renovation/). The $10 million project delivered a modern and unique course design featuring dramatic elevation changes and the addition of nearly three acres of lakes, among other updates.

Isaiah Jackson & Alex Scott Share 2nd Round Lead At Patriot All-America Invitational

(LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz.) – Isaiah Jackson and Alex Scott share the second round lead at 5-under par (135) at the Patriot All-America Invitational presented by the Valley Toyota Dealers at The Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Final round action will begin at 9:30 AM on Monday (12/31) off both the 1st and 10th tees with a champion crowned at approximately 4 PM MST.

Jackson, a junior at the University of Memphis from Golden, Mississippi, entered the day tied for first place. His second round 2-under-par 68 included six birdies, with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to closeout his round. Jackson is playing in honor of his great grandfather U.S. Army Private First Class Willie B. McGill. Private First Class McGill was killed in combat action on December 4th, 1944.

Alex Scott, a senior from Grand Valley State University, began the day one-shot off the lead. Scott’s second round 3-under-par 67 included five birdies. Like Jackson, Scott also had back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18. Scott is playing in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Jordan E. Goode of Kalamazoo, Michigan. On August 11, 2007 in Zormat, Afghanistan, Corporal Goode was killed when a roadside bomb detonated beneath the truck he was driving. He was 21 years old.

Quade Cummins from the University of Oklahoma (70-66) and Jackson Suber from Ole Miss (69-67) both sit one-shot back at 4-under par (136). Suber is looking to become the second Ole Miss Rebel to win the Patriot All-America, joining teammate Braden Thornberry who was the 2015 Patriot All-America champion.

Defending champion and first round co-leader Mason Overstreet shot a 3-over-par 73 and sits at even par, 5-shots back.

Kaito Onishi, a sophomore at USC and the reigning Pac-12 Men's Golf Freshman of the Year, had a hole-in-one on the par-3, 16th hole, hitting a 9-iron from 160-yards. Onishi shot a 3-under par 67 during the second round and is currently tied for 8th.

Now in its 8th year, the Patriot All-America Invitational is a golf tournament unlike any other, as participants play in honor of a fallen or severely injured soldier by carrying a golf bag bearing the name of that soldier. Before the tournament, participants receive a card with the soldier’s story, so they can be familiar with who that person was, what they represented and how they were killed or wounded in action. The Patriot All-America has been honoring fallen or severely wounded soldiers in this unique way since the event’s inception in 2011 and it continues to have a deep impact on the young golfers.

The Patriot All-America Invitational features a field of 84 PING All-America golfers from all three NCAA Divisions, NAIA and NJCAA rankings as well as from U.S. Military Academies and universities outside the United States. The Patriot All-America is a collaboration between the Arizona Golf Association, JDM Partners, The West Valley Mavericks and the Golf Coaches Association of America in partnership with the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Thunderbirds, hosts of the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, volunteer at and support the event.

Patriot All-America alumni now playing on the PGA TOUR, include three-time major winner Brooks Koepka (2011 Patriot participant); Justin Thomas (2011); Daniel Berger (2012); Bryson DeChambeau (2013); and Cameron Champ, the 2016 Patriot All-America Invitational champion.

The winner of the tournament receives a sponsor exemption into the Web.com Tour’s Wichita Open played June 20 - 23 at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kansas. For more information and live tournament scoring, visit www.patriotallamerica.com.

2018 Marks Winningest Year in Bridgestone Golf Tour Team History

(COVINGTON, Ga.) – Bridgestone Golf, the #1 Ball-Fitter in Golf, announced today that in 2018 its TOUR Team achieved the most victories in one calendar year in company history.  In addition, Bridgestone Golf had more wins per Tour Team member than any other golf ball company.
Bridgestone’s hallmark Tour year totaled an incredible 8 PGA TOUR wins with just 4 staff players.  Of the 8 victories, 7 were won with Bridgestone’s acclaimed TOUR B X Golf ball.  The exceptional win for the TOUR B XS came in perhaps the most exciting and anticipated win of the season, marking Tiger Woods return to the winner’s circle at the season-ending TOUR Championship.    The final win of the year gave Bridgestone its 2nd season-ending championship, when Lexi Thompson relied on the TOUR B X in her triumph at the 2018 CME Group Tour Championship.

Bridgestone’s TOUR B X and TOUR B XS are designed for players with greater than 105 mph driver swing speeds. Both the X and XS were softened over their predecessors and provide more spin and greenside control due to their softer urethane cover formulation, while increased distance comes from enhanced aerodynamics and an improved 330 Dual Dimple design. The X is for those players looking for more power and ball speed off the tee, while the XS provides extra spin control and slightly softer feel greenside, while still maintaining low driver spin off the tee.

Below is a rundown of the Bridgestone Tour Team’s wins and noteworthy achievements in 2018:
·       Winner of Waste Management Phoenix Open uses TOUR B X (Feb. 1-4, 2018)
·       Bryson DeChambeau wins The Memorial Tournament using TOUR B X (May 31- June 3, 2018)
·       Brandt Snedeker wins Wyndham Championship using TOUR B X while also shooting first career 59 in the opening round (Aug. 16-19, 2018)
·       Bryson DeChambeau wins THE NORTHERN TRUST using TOUR B X (Aug. 23-26, 2018)
·       Bryson DeChambeau goes back-to-back winning the Dell Technologies Championship with TOUR B X (Aug. 31-Sep. 3, 2018)
·       Tiger Woods Completes One of the Greatest Comebacks in Golf History winning the TOUR Championship with TOUR B XS (Sep. 20-23, 2018)
·       Bridgestone balls win 3 out of 4 FedEx Cup Playoff Events
·       Bryson DeChambeau wins Shriners for Hospitals for Children Open using TOUR B X (Nov. 1-4, 2018)
·       Matt Kuchar wins Mayakoba Golf Classic using TOUR B X (Nov. 8-11, 2018)
·       Lexi Thompson wins CME Group Tour Championship using TOUR B X (Nov. 15-18, 2018)

“By any measure our Tour Team had a phenomenal year in 2018,” said Dan Murphy, Bridgestone Golf President & CEO. “At Bridgestone Golf our Tour Team strategy is one based on quality not quantity.  By achieving more wins per capita, per player, than any other company this year, we have demonstrated that our technology and performance is second to none and our stable of players is best-in-class in the game.”

The TOUR B series balls that were used to achieve 9 total professional wins in 2018 are a result of Bridgestone’s continued commitment to providing premium tee-to-green performance to players of varying swing types. Bridgestone owns over 800 golf ball patents and fully leverages the company’s heritage of excellence in polymer science worldwide to design the industry’s most cutting-edge golf balls.

Cabo San Lucas Country Club Reopens for Play with a New Look

Public-access facility overlooking sea revived by Mexican golf architect Agustin Piza

(Los Cabos, Mexico) – Cabo San Lucas Country Club, one of the oldest and most centrally located golf facilities in Los Cabos, has successfully completed a major renovation project.

According to Alfonso Terrazas Cecena, the club’s project manager, “We needed to demonstrate to visitors and the community that Cabo San Lucas Country Club was not wiped out by Tropical Storm Lidia in September, 2017. We were hurt (by torrential rains), but the damage was superficial and certainly not catastrophic. We’ve bounced back as part of a five-month renovation project, and I believe we’ve succeeded in restoring confidence and credibility in the club.”

Located just minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas and the only course in Los Cabos with views of the iconic sea arch and rock formations at Land’s End, the Country Club’s original 18-hole course was laid out by Roy Dye, brother of Pete Dye. The course was completed by Roy’s son Matt Dye, a second-generation architect.

The parkland-style layout, previously one of the longest and most challenging courses in Los Cabos, has been significantly remodeled. Now stretching to 6,852 yards (par 71) from the black tees, the Country Club compares favorably to golf courses in Palm Springs, California. Gently rolling fairways girdled by waste bunkers, cardon cactus, palo blanco trees and colorful bougainvillea characterize the layout. Tall stony mountains frame the course to the north. Lakes bring water into play at seven holes, notably at the testing par-4 ninth and 18th holes, where a large rock-rimmed lagoon protects each green.

Agustin Piza, a Mexican designer who has worked extensively throughout Latin America, altered several holes to improve sightlines and enhance playability. In particular, the club’s back nine was shortened and its corridors widened to expand the layout’s ocean views. The new and revised holes feature improved flexibility from the forward tees, better risk-reward scenarios from the back tees, and more undulating greens. Bunkers throughout the course were reshaped and upgraded. Pruning of trees and vegetation has created a breezier, links-style environment. The club, readily accessible by area hotels and cruise ship passengers, also features the only lighted driving range in Los Cabos.

In the wake of the remedial work by Piza, holes one through seven remain the same, while the par-3 eighth and par-4 ninth holes were swapped for the par-3 17th and par-4 18th holes, respectively.

The most noticeable changes are found on the back nine, specifically holes 10 through 16. The par-4 10th plays from the same set of tee boxes as the original hole, but a friendlier green closer to the tees enables average players to reach it in regulation. The par-3 11th is a new creation that plays to the site of the old 12th green, which Piza refashioned into a large, wavy putting surface. The 12th hole was converted from a brawny par 4 to a sporty par 5, while the par-4 13th occupies the original hole’s corridor but plays to a remodeled green. The par-3 14th, stretching to 208 yards, brings a lake into play on the right. At the par-5 16th, Piza reversed the direction of the hole. The fairway, pointed to the Sea of Cortes, now runs from north to south.

While players have lauded the changes and embraced the layout’s improved playability, the club still presents a firm test. The new greens are larger and more liberally contoured than the original putting surfaces, which are small and relatively flat.

In addition, Cabo San Lucas Country Club still has a few very tough hombres. Among the more daunting holes is the double-dogleg par-5 seventh, which swings around a lake and stretches to 610 yards from the back tees, ranking it among the longest holes in Mexico.

The closing duo is one of the most challenging in Cabo. The par-3 17th, measuring 226 yards from the tips (205 yards from the white tees), plays uphill into the prevailing wind to a perched, tilted green. The long par-4 18th, which calls for a blind tee shot over a gentle rise, demands a very accurate approach shot to a green pinched by a lagoon on the left and bunkers on the right.

Future plans call for a pitch ‘n putt course to be built in the vicinity of the driving range. A new clubhouse is also planned. Cabo San Lucas Country Club offers special green fee and driving range specials that include burgers, beers and BBQ ribs. The club’s Viva Restaurant, its spacious outdoor patio set near the practice facility, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Clubhouse, Golf Course Renovated; New Memberships Now Available

(Boca Raton, Fla.) – Boca Lago Country Club is nearing completion of significant golf course renovations and extensive clubhouse improvements that will further cement its position as one of the best premier lifestyle clubs in Boca Raton’s competitive private-club market.

“The enhancement of the entire property diversifies areas for current and new members and their guests to enjoy the club,” said new owner Steven Danza. “The renovations are integral to our vision of promoting a healthy lifestyle, including walking privileges for golfers, enhanced fitness programs, and contemporary menu choices. This positions the club favorably to a wide demographic age range for years to come.”

The $3.6-million renovation of the clubhouse will be completed early next year. The revitalized clubhouse will showcase upgraded dining areas and pool complex, as well as all-new outdoor dining and gathering spaces.

Located in the heart of Palm Beach County, Boca Lago Country Club features 27 holes of golf originally designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. The golf course currently has 18 holes open for play, following a renovation under the direction of golf course architect Jan Bel Jan and golf course superintendent George Redshaw, GCSAA.  The remaining nine are scheduled to open in January.

The redevelopment of the South, East, and West nines includes redesigned greens, repositioned and re-contoured bunkers in the fairways and around greens, as well as reshaped and rearranged teeing grounds.

The renovation incorporates the best elements of the original course design with a revitalized approach to strategy and playability from each tee. There are multiple choices of how to play each hole, with the lakes and tree lined fairways still playing a pivotal role in the character of all three nines.

The practice facilities have been expanded to include more full-swing space, three practice putting areas and a dedicated short-game area, as well as two practice holes that can be played in multiple ways.

Boca Lago Country Club offers a variety full and seasonal golf or tennis/social memberships in a number of categories, including single, family, executive junior, and corporate.

The transformation of Boca Lago Country Club will strengthen its reputation as one of the area’s premier venues for private events, weddings, corporate/charity golf tournaments, and community fund-raising events.  Reservations are now being taken for the 2019 season and beyond.

The reconfigured dining room, long a popular special-events venue, has been opened up to accommodate seating for up to 375 guests, including a dance floor and stage.  Floor-to-ceiling windows present elevated views of the golf course and lake on the east side of the 250-acre property.

A new arrival experience and entrance will greet members and guests, enhanced by lush landscaping, a refreshed color palette, and a light, airy lobby. Seating areas and reading nooks have also been added, while the Grille Room, Living Room, and Lounge are updated with new carpeting, furnishings, and vibrant color palette.

The floorplan of the clubhouse has been reconfigured to maximize the views of the golf course, lakes, and swimming pool, while enhancing the flow into an expansive new covered patio. The outdoor Tiki Bar, adjacent to the pool, will feature a grill for casual dining, as well as golfers making the turn.

The new outdoor area—totally covered as it wraps around the clubhouse from the pool to the main dining room—will offer seating areas, casual dining options, plus additional space for pre-function and cocktail parties.  “The covered area around the pool undoubtedly will become a popular gathering spot and provides a tremendous ambiance for anyone planning a special event,” Danza added.

The club features 20 courts (16 Har-Tru and four hard), swimming pool, and Jacuzzi.

Future phases of the master plan call for a ceremony gazebo, game room, and locker room enhancements.

Kissimmee Bay Country Club Completes Renovation

Kissimmee Bay Country Club opened to rave reviews in 1990, servicing locals in the Orlando area and tourists from all across the country. Golf Digest was so impressed that it included the Lloyd Clifton design on its list of “America’s Best New Courses.”
Now, 28 years later, ownership has executed a plan to bring the popular course back to its lofty standing with a complete renovation of the greens complexes and many other areas of the golf course.
The job was completed in mid-October and the course has reopened after being closed for three months.
“It was time for this,” said Rick Smith, Director of Golf at the semi-private Kissimmee Bay. “The membership as well as our guests deserve the best quality golf experience possible. A lot of them have been here since it opened, and have gone through the good times and the bad times. We’re ready for a return to the good times.”
The Tifdwarf putting surfaces were rebuilt using the new G12 Bermuda grass. Kissimmee Bay is one of the first courses in the region to feature this new strain of grass, and Golf Course Superintendent Jimmy Dutcher with Down to Earth Landscaping and Irrigation, says players will notice the upgrade right away.
“The G12 can handle a lower cut for longer periods of time which provides speedier putting surfaces,” said Dutcher. “It also does better than the original grass in regards to disease stress. It is a huge improvement.”
During the renovation, several greens were slightly re-shaped, and most were expanded back to their original size, bringing some of the greenside bunkers back into play. The team added about a ½-acre to the putting surfaces across the 18 holes.
“These greens don’t have a lot of obvious undulation – just subtle movement and that hasn't changed,” said Dutcher. “That’s the Clifton style. We did create a couple of false fronts, and we re-shaped some approach areas, giving players bump-and-run options that didn't exist before. The major difference our regulars will see is that the greens will be quicker on a consistent basis.”
Players will notice several other upgrades to the golf course. Dutcher and his team took the opportunity to do some work on the bunkers, including creating grass bunker walls, providing a more natural look.
Dutcher’s team also reshaped and leveled some of the tee boxes, used a herbicide application to clean up a few areas on the course, and re-did the practice tee.
Also, the irrigation system was totally revamped, a feature that regulars will pick up on.
“The original irrigation system was still in place here,” said Smith. “We were having to hand-water in the morning during play. The new system is electronically controlled, meaning we can now water at night or any other time it is needed.”
The changes in the golf course will only enhance the high-quality, nature laden golf experience that has greeted golfers since the beginning of Kissimmee Bay. It is not unusual to see turkeys, bobcats and cranes meandering among the stately oaks and pines that line most of the fairways. Large gators can be seen swimming in the lakes that come into play on 16 holes. A round of golf at Kissimmee Bay Country Club is a virtual stroll through nature.
It is also a solid challenge, featuring many unique holes in a beautiful setting, requiring players to move the ball in both directions to score well.
The par 5 ninth is a perfect example of several outstanding risk/reward holes at Kissimmee Bay. It is u-shaped, bending right to left around a water hazard and stand of trees.  The tee shot calls for a draw through a narrow shoot, and if hit well gives the player the opportunity to reach the green in two. But the approach must be struck purely as it requires a carry over water to a sloping green that is guarded by bunkers left and right. A bailout area on the right provides a safer option.
A memorable golf experience is not the only attraction at Kissimmee Bay. The partially renovated clubhouse is home to the Langley Golf Museum, an incredible collection of golf artifacts dating back to the beginnings of the game.
The vast collection includes famous clubs, balls, trophies, magazine covers, scorecards and much more. The crown jewel of the museum is a workbench from the Old Tom Morris Workshop at the Old Course in St. Andrews as well as a club made by him.
It’s all part of a unique and fulfilling golf experience that Kissimmee Bay provided for its customers during its glory days. Now, with the renovations, management is promising that same experience.
While in the area you will also want to check out their sister club, Remington Golf Club just one mile away. A more contemporary design with wide fairways and large greens.  This is also maintained by Down to Earth Landscaping and Irrigation and is worth your time to check them out.

Product Review: Puma Golf IGNITE PWRADAPT Disc Golf Shoe

Here’s a dilemma facing golfers on a regular basis … You want a lightweight shoe that offers extreme, non-slip gripping. Somehow the IGNITE PWRADAPT Disc golf shoe from Puma delivers on both fronts.

In too many cases, you can’t achieve both demands. Lightweight shoes are comfortable, but tend to slip. Spiked shoes hug the turf, but can be less-than-comfy. With the IGNITE PWRADAPT, you don’t need to choose between comfort and performance.

Puma’s full-length IGNITE Foam cushioning platform provides responsive comfort and PWRADAPT Technology’s 3-dimensional traction that adapts to the way you move provides traction, but what’s the “Disc” in its name?

The Disc is an ingenious method of lacing the shoes for a custom feel. Slide into the upper and twist the disc to tighten on your foot - not too tight and not too loose. One click counter clockwise and the tightening is undone.

Bonus: The Puma IGNITE PWRADAPT Disc golf shoe looks great, is lightweight and hugs the turf … but it also comes with a two-year waterproof guarantee. That’s the trifecta, plus one!

Charlie Rymer, Golf Tourism Solutions Partner to Showcase Myrtle Beach Golf Community

Rymer to Produce Content Across Multiple Platforms for Game’s Most Popular Destination

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) - Charlie Rymer has joined the Golf Tourism Solutions team in a multi-media partnership that will showcase the media star and former PGA Tour player as the voice of the Myrtle Beach golf scene.

The agreement will pair Rymer, a former Golf Channel personality, with Golf Tourism Solutions (GTS), a company that has the assets of a media outlet, including one of the game’s largest email databases, a print magazine and more than 200,000 social media followers.

GTS is responsible for promoting Myrtle Beach as a golf destination and the agency operates PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com, a website dedicated to helping players plan a trip to the Grand Strand.

Myrtle Beach has long been on the leading edge of destination marketing and by partnering with Rymer to help tell the many stories revolving around the area, that will continue to be the case.

Rymer’s popularity is derived from his down-home charm and a thoughtfulness about the game and its future that makes him an ideal partner for Myrtle Beach. He will be working across a broad cross section of media, providing video, written and social media content that will feature, but not be limited to, the Myrtle Beach golf scene.

The South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame inductee will also be working with Project Golf, a GTS-founded non-profit dedicated to helping grow the game through a variety of initiatives.

“In a lot of regards, I feel like I’m coming home,” Rymer said of the partnership. “At this point in my golf career, I want to do things I’m passionate about and Myrtle Beach is a great fit. Myrtle Beach wants to open the game up to as a many people as possible, and that is what motivates me. I’m also looking forward to working with Project Golf and helping kids and our military veterans through the game. All those things together make this a wonderful fit for me.”

“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Charlie, and we share a love for the game and what it represents,” said Bill Golden, CEO of Golf Tourism Solutions. “Charlie’s personality, popularity and creativity, combined with his affinity for the market, make this a perfect opportunity for both of us as we navigate a continually evolving media landscape. Golfers can look forward to seeing Myrtle Beach - on and off the course - from the perspective of one of the game’s most popular voices.”

In a changing media landscape, the partnership is a natural one as Rymer, a native South Carolinian, is intimately familiar the market. He grew up playing junior golf in Myrtle Beach and annually vacationed along the Grand Strand before taking on a formal role in the area as the host of “Road Trip: Myrtle Beach,” a show that aired on Golf Channel.

During his 11-year stint with Golf Channel, Rymer maintained his ties to the area. He annually returned to participate in First Tee events and emcee nightly festivities at the World’s Largest 19th Hole during the World Amateur Handicap Championship. Rymer also helped start the Gene’s Dream Foundation, an organization that honors the memory of Gene Weldon, a long-time PGA pro in the area who mentored Rymer and Kelly Tilghman among countless other junior golfers.

Troon Announces Partnership with Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu, Hawaii

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Troon, the leader in golf course management, development, and marketing, is pleased to announce its new partnership with Turtle Bay Resort on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Turtle Bay Resort is located on Oahu’s famed North Shore, approximately 50 minutes from Honolulu and features 36 holes of golf – the Arnold Palmer Course and the George Fazio Course.

Open since 1992, the Arnold Palmer Course was designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer and course architect Ed Seay and is consistently rated as one of the top golf courses in Hawaii. The par-72, 7,218-yard course has two distinct nine-hole experiences. The front nine challenges golfers with a Scottish Links-style layout, while the back nine has a more tropical setting as it meanders through a tropical jungle and a forest of ironwoods. The 18-hole layout forms a horseshoe around the Punaho’olapa marsh, an unspoiled 100-acre wetlands and bird sanctuary. Water comes into play on 14 holes, with the 17th – the Palmer Course’s signature hole – offering panoramic Pacific Ocean views from the green.

Turtle Bay’s George Fazio Course opened in 1972. The 18-hole layout meanders through traditional Hawaiian Palms while skirting the North Shore on numerous occasions providing breathtaking ocean views on both the front and back nines. Over the years, the Fazio Course has tested the game’s best, including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Sam Snead, and Chi Chi Rodriguez in the first Champions Tour Skins Game. The Fazio Course also hosted the LPGA Tour's Hawaiian Open from 1987 through 1989.

"We are pleased to be working with Turtle Bay," said Mike Ryan, chief operating officer, Troon. "The golf courses and the resort property are absolutely stunning. We are excited to extend our popular Troon programs, which will contribute positively to the overall value and experience for local golfers, resort guests and those traveling to Oahu.”

"Our team at Turtle Bay looks forward to working with the best golf management team in the business,” said Jerry Gibson, Vice President & Managing Director for Turtle Bay Resort. “This partnership will enhance our ability to reach golfers from all over the world and showcase Turtle Bay as a premier golf destination.”

Troon-affiliated properties in the Aloha State, include Kapalua Golf in Lahaina, Maui; Mauna Lani on Hawai‘i Island; King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Maui; Kahili Golf Course in Wailuku, Maui; and Princeville Makai Golf Club in Princeville, Kaua‘i.

Product Review: Bushnell Hybrid Laser Rangefinder and GPS Device

I’ve been torn between using a laser rangefinder or GPS on the golf course. On one hand, I love the accuracy and versatility of the rangefinder, but my hand isn’t always steady – leaving doubt in my mind if I’m shooting the right thing (flag or tree behind the green). On the other hand, GPS is so simple, but yardage to the front, middle and back isn’t specific enough at times.

Bushnell Golf has answered my prayers, offering the best of both worlds in its Hybrid – a laser rangefinder and GPS device all rolled into one, handy package.

The Bushnell Hybrid is a first-of-its-kind device and marvel of modern technology. I may have exaggerated a bit with “marvel,” but not by much.

The laser shoots a flag from 400 yards away and is accurate to 1 yard. You know you’re hitting the target thanks to 5× magnification. When you’re locked and loaded on the flag, “PinSeeker with JOLT Technology” alerts you with a slight vibration.

Prefer GPS? The Hybrid comes preloaded with more than 36,000 courses in 30 countries. Like most GPS devises, the Hybrid readout provides distances from the front, center and back. Unlike many of its category contemporaries, the Hybrid gives you up to four hazard distances per hole. Automatic features include course updates, course recognition and hole advance.

Bonus: The Bushnell Golf App is included with the purchase of a Hybrid. In addition to an overhead view of the hole you’re playing, the app allows golfers to schedule tee times, record your scores, sync with the Swing Pro for game improvement or even track your steps with the pedometer if you’re interested in the fitness component of golf.

The Bushnell Hybrid is a PB&J of distance measuring devices. It’s an original and will hard to beat. Log onto bushnellgolf.com to learn more or order yours for holiday delivery today.

Elite Field Slated to Compete in Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship

Alexa Pano, left, and Michael Brennan are defending champs.
28 Top 100 Boys, 16 Top 100 Girls to Tee it Up at TPC Myrtle Beach March 1-3

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) - The field for the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship is set, and 28 of the top 100 junior boys and 16 of the top 100 girls will be competing in fourth annual event March 1-3 at TPC Myrtle Beach.

“Dustin wants to create the best junior golf tournament in the world, and we have certainly taken another step toward fulfilling that goal this year,” said Scott Tomasello, Golf Tourism Solutions’ Tournament Director. “This year’s field is on par with the best junior tournaments in the country, and they will be tested by TPC Myrtle Beach, one of America’s premier golf courses.”

The field of 90 golfers (66 boys, 24 girls) will be headlined by the return of defending champions Michael Brennan (Leesburg, Va.) and Alexa Pano (Lake Worth, Fla.), America’s sixth-ranked junior girl, according to Golfweek. Brennan captured the 2018 title in dramatic fashion, making eagle on TPC’s par 5 18th hole to finish the final round and hold off Akshay Bhatia, currently the country’s top-ranked junior.

Other headliners on the boys side include No. 15 Jackson Van Paris (Pinehurst, N.C.), No. 22 Nick Dunlap (Greer, S.C.), the highest ranked South Carolinian in the field, No. 27 Gavin Noble (Ringgold, G.A.), and No. 28 George Duangmanee (Fairfax, Va.).

On the girls side, No. 11 Ashley Menne (Surprise, Az.), last year’s runner-up, is returning, along with No. 30 Latanna Stone (Riverview, Fla.), No. 43 Jensen Castle (Columbia, S.C.), and No. 44 Erika Smith (Orlando, Fla.).

The only three slots remaining to be filled will be determined by a one-day qualifier at TPC Myrtle Beach on February 9. Two boys and one girl will advance from the qualifier.

With the support of Johnson, the third ranked player in the world, the 54-hole tournament will provide players a PGA Tour-like experience, and the opportunity to test themselves against some of the game’s best juniors.

A significant part of the event’s appeal is TPC Myrtle Beach, one of the Grand Strand’s most decorated layouts. TPC Myrtle Beach has hosted the Senior PGA Tour Championship and been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest, making it an ideal venue to test golf’s rising young stars.

Johnson’s involvement with the tournament reflects his long-time commitment to junior golf, particularly in South Carolina, where he grew into one of the world’s best players. Through the Dustin Johnson Foundation, which is headquartered in Myrtle Beach, Johnson has donated more than $250,000 to junior golf, sponsoring numerous events throughout the state and helping cover entry costs for kids who need financial assistance.

The Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship is being sponsored by Founders Group International, the Dustin Johnson Golf School, and Golf Tourism Solutions.

BallenIsles Members Greenlight $7.4 Million South Golf Course Renovation

(Palm Beach Gardens, Fl.) – On the heels of BallenIsles Country Club opening their new, highly regarded 115,000 sq. ft. clubhouse to much fanfare, the membership has voted in favor to approve a $7.4 million-dollar-renovation of their South Golf Course.

Following the overwhelming Member vote, noted golf architect Rees Jones is scheduled to begin the BallenIsles South Golf Course renovation in April. The project will be completed around September 2019 and ready for play in December 2019.

“This is a significant statement by our membership and community, to enter into this project immediately following the opening of our new clubhouse and continues our trajectory of being the preferred residential community in the Palm Beaches. Having three world-class golf courses helps us further cement our position as a market leader and the preferred choice for people to call home. The South Course for the past 50 years has been a favorite with our membership and it was time for us to refresh this outstanding layout,” said BallenIsles General Manager and Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Walls.

"We’re delighted that our members have given their unequivocal approval for the South Golf Course renovation. The renovation and re-design envisioned by Rees Jones enhances playability for all levels of players. Rees is known for his ability to challenge the good golfers while giving those who wish for a less stressful way around the course, another option," added Club President Michael Muntner. “The majority vote for the project is the culmination of an evaluation process, initiated and overseen by the Club’s Board of Directors that included independent focus groups and workshops, led by construction, finance and design committees.”

“Few country clubs offer their members such a historic connection to golf and we’re looking forward to beginning the renovation that will continue to uphold the rich legacy of BallenIsles,” Golf Architect Rees Jones said.

The renovation will include a full tee to green re-design including all tees, greens, grassing, bunkering and architectural changes. The core playing corridors and original Joe Lee layout will remain mostly unchanged, but the Rees Jones Design will make this a modern masterpiece.

“I cannot wait for our members to experience the final product. With our historic East Course and recently renovated North Course, I can’t think of where you will find three better courses each with distinct differences in appeal and playability. This is truly a milestone and exciting time for our club. The enthusiasm from prospective residents and members has exploded following the opening our new clubhouse and the project will only further enhance the level of excitement around our community,” added Walls.  “When completed, BallenIsles will be home to three modern-day renovated golf courses of championship quality, in addition to 180,000 sq. ft. of social space between the Sports Complex and new Clubhouse, a top rated 22-court racquet and swim facility, state-of-the-art fitness center, practice facility, six dining venues, a spa and salon and all the comforts of home any member would need. We are truly one of the leading residential clubs and communities in the country.”

The Fast Track to the 2018 Winner's Circle: New TS Drivers and Fairway Metals

(RELEASE) - When Titleist Brand Ambassadors Brian Harman and Patton Kizzire won the QBE Shootout this past weekend, they both had a long game advantage in the bag - new Titleist TS metals. The result of a two-year Titleist R&D mission, the Titleist Speed (TS) Project deconstructed the driver and fairway metal and then rebuilt them both from scratch, designing greater speed into every detail. Harman and Kizzire certainly reaped the benefits in Naples, recording 27 birdies and three eagles on their way to a winning score of 30-under-par 186.

The Tour introduction of TS drivers took place on the toughest stage in golf, the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Shinnecock was chosen deliberately, for what better test could Titleist R&D devise to validate the performance of the new TS than the unforgiving demands and pressure of a U.S. Open layout? And with so much at stake, 17 players (40% of players using Titleist drivers) put the new TS drivers immediately in play, an unprecedented shift for the week of a major championship.

Since that initial seeding and validation process (TS fairway metals debuted two weeks later at the Quicken Loans National), players relying on TS metals have captured 22 titles across the worldwide professional golf tours. In that brief span, over 150 players have made the switch to TS and as Josh Talge, Vice President of Marketing for Titleist Clubs told us, this early success and adoption by the world's best players is no surprise, given the performance that these new products deliver.

“From start to finish, the TS Project was about driving ball speed and unlocking a level of performance that golfers simply couldn’t ignore,” Talge said. "We know performance is the story that golfers care about. From the ball speed and distance gains we’re seeing, both on tour and with amateur golfers, it’s clear that TS metals deliver a new level of Titleist Speed.”

TS METALS HIGHLIGHTS:
- In June, Michael Kim (TS2 10.5°) became the first player to post a victory with the new Titleist TS driver, winning the John Deere Classic by a record eight shots. For the tournament, Kim averaged five yards more off the tee (294.8) and was nearly 30 percentage points (82.14%) higher in driving accuracy compared to his 2017-18 season averages.

- At the 2018 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, the opening event of the Web.com Tour Finals, both Robert Streb and Peter Malnati punched their 2018-2019 PGA Tour cards with TS drivers and fairways in the bag. Finishing 1-2, Streb (TS2 9.5°, TS3 15°) topped Malnati (TS2 9.5°, 13.5°) on the first hole of a playoff.

- In early August Justin Thomas earned his first World Golf Championships title with a four-shot victory at Firestone, crediting the performance gains of his TS3 9.5° driver and TS3 15° fairway.

“The new TS driver was instantly faster," Thomas said, "and I was able to get a few more yards carry when needed. More importantly for me, my spin numbers were more consistent, so it has helped me drive the ball much better. The fairway metal, too, has gone up in spin, which gives me more control. And I can easily fly it 280-285 off the tee if needed, which is such a great asset to have.”

The long list of players who have added TS metals to their bags includes: Adam Scott (TS3 10.5°), Bill Haas (TS2 9.5°, 15°, 18°), Jimmy Walker (TS3 8.5°, 13.5°), Brian Harman (TS2 13.5°), Cameron Smith (TS2 9.5°, 15°), Byeong-Hun An (TS3 9.5°), Charley Hoffman (TS3 9.5°), Ian Poulter (TS3 9.5°), Rafa Cabrera Bello (TS3 9.5°), Webb Simpson (TS3 10.5°), Chesson Hadley (TS2 10.5°, TS3 16.5°), Peter Uihlein (TS3 9.5°, TS2 15°) and Patton Kizzire (TS3 10.5°).

Currie Golf Courses (Midland, MI) Votes to Retain Billy Casper Golf

(RELEASE) - Billy Casper Golf (BCG) – the innovative manager of golf courses, country clubs and resorts – was unanimously approved to continue operating Currie Golf Courses in Midland, Mich.

The Midland City Council voted on BCG’s extension for its three distinct layouts – Currie West (18 holes), Currie East (nine holes) and a par 3 course.  BCG oversees clubhouse operations, property maintenance, marketing and sales, staffing and training, food-and-beverage, financial management and other functions.

Over the past five years, BCG has significantly reduced Currie’s operating deficit, enhanced course conditions and grown junior programming.  Next year, it is expected to become a regional First Tee host location.

Currie has also solidified its status as a venerable tournament venue. In 2015, it unveiled a new driving range that will be put to good use next summer when Currie will serve as the host practice facility for the LPGA’s Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. This past July, Currie West hosted a U.S. Amateur Qualifier.

“Billy Casper Golf has been an excellent business partner over the past five years,” says David Keenan, Assistant City Manager, City of Midland. “The vast experience and positive track record they bring to the relationship has enabled the City to achieve many of its financial and operational goals.”

“We’re proud of the way the Billy Casper Golf team has improved course conditions and service standards at Currie,” says Nick Bednar, Vice President of Operations at BCG. “This has anchored our ability to raise Currie’s profile in mid-Michigan and attract new players in droves.”

Product Review: Titleist AVX and Tour Soft Golf Balls

This Christmas, don't wrap an ugly tie Dad will never wear. Give him something he'll use and love ... golf balls.

Titleist has been the "#1 ball in golf" for as long as I can remember. That's a good place to start (and finish). The company introduced a pair of new models in 2018, too.

Most recently, the Massachusetts giant unveiled the AVX. Basically, the AVX is Titleist’s lowest flying ball. It also spins less and is softer than both the Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

Earlier in the year, Titleist brought the Tour Soft to market. The Tour Soft is the softest-feeling golf ball in its category and delivers an incredible performance experience. Tour Soft’s innovative design combines the largest core ever engineered into a Titleist golf ball with ultra-thin cover technology to provide responsive feel, very fast speed for commanding distance and excellent short game performance.

The AVX retails for $47.99, while the Tour Soft goes for $34.99. More tech detail below:

Titleist AVX
* AVX utilizes innovative, high speed, low compression core technology, resulting in a powerful engine to drive remarkable distance with exceptionally soft feel.

* The proprietary GRN41 cast thermoset urethane cover delivers premium scoring control with exceptionally soft feel and long lasting durability.

* The high flex casing layer enhances speed and controls spin to promote even greater distance.

* The unique spherically-tiled 352 tetrahedral catenary aerodynamic design delivers optimal and consistent flight on all shots.

Titlelst Tour Soft
* The largest Titleist core ever produces category-leading soft feel and high ball speed for commanding distance. In developing Tour Soft’s core, the Titleist Golf Ball R&D and Operations teams were challenged to surpass previously accepted core size limitations in order to produce a golf ball that feels better and is as long or longer than the competition.

* A new ultra-thin 4CE grafted cover made with TCU Process Technology generates advanced short game control. Innovations in the manufacturing process at Titleist Ball Plant 2 in Massachusetts allowed engineers to mold the extremely thin, very soft cover formulation – made from a proprietary blend of four different materials – uniformly across the surface.

* A new spherically-tiled 342 cuboctahedron dimple design, optimized for the new Tour Soft construction, delivers a penetrating trajectory and consistent flight.

* Tour Soft is available in both white and high-optic yellow.

The Ryder Course reopened late 2017 to rave reviews following a renovation project that enhanced the greens and surrounding areas.

A string of awards and accolades were bestowed upon PGA Golf Club in 2018. “The real beauty of Quivira comes from living life at your own pace,” said Taber Anderson, Managing Director of Quivira Los Cabos. “We want people to put down roots and truly enjoy their time here. By celebrating the art of living well, supporting and encouraging local and regional providers, and seeking the company of those who share common values, members can transform minutes into unforgettable moments.”

According to Yessica Rintflaich, Leisure & Experiences Director at Quivira Los Cabos, “The Q Life’s collection of amenities and services make residents feel like they’re part of a vibrant community. It’s really wonderful seeing members make new friends through shared activities.”

Q Life’s six themed Pillars—Healthy Living, Cultural Experiences, Flavors, Quivira Chillin’, Cool Club, and On Four Paws—enable residents to pursue a myriad array of passions and interests.

* Healthy Living provides the tools for relaxation, healthy nutrition, and a physically active lifestyle. Residents enjoy access to the award-winning Armonia Spa Collection at Pueblo Bonito resorts, yoga classes at secluded locations with magnificent scenic views, a state-of-the-art fitness center, plus a full schedule of daily activities, from water aerobics and hiking to power walks and mountain biking on an extensive network of marked trails throughout the community.
* Cultural Experiences promotes experiences that allow residents to broaden their horizons and acquire a new appreciation for culture, starting with itinerant visual art exhibitions by rising national artists. “Learning by doing” guitar lessons, with the accent on regional songs and music, are available, as are lessons in visual arts, including painting, ceramics, and photography. Spanish lessons are also available.
* Flavors Pillar welcomes members and guests to savor all aspects of cultural cuisine, including how to appreciate the taste of fine dishes and wines, and lessons in cooking and nutrition.  Q Life’s Wine Club, guided by the resort community’s top sommeliers, offers tastings as well as cuisine pairing suggestions.
* Chillin’ Pillar creates spaces and social activities designed to promote interaction between members of the Quivira community, encouraging shared experiences. For example, owner cocktail parties are typically held every week during high season, while on-shore fishing is a great way to experience the dramatic scenery of Quivira’s privileged location. Residents also enjoy exclusive access to the private, members-only course at Quivira Golf Club, a spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature design recently voted to Golf Digest’s “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” roster.
* Cool Club Pillar provides a safe and stimulating environment for children. Among the fun, educational activities available are golf lessons for kids & teens (ages 6-16) In addition, the Kids Club at Sunset Beach features arts and crafts, board games, while the Fun Lab offers arcade games, video games, pool games, movies, and more.
* On Four Paws Pillar gives the community’s four-legged companions the care they deserve. Walkers and trainers, water dispensers and waste disposal bins are located around the property, ensuring the well-being of members’ beloved pets. The guiding theme is simple: Tired dogs are calm dogs. Exercised dogs are healthy animals.
