Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass Golf Club Calls for Volunteers

(HARRIS, Mich.) - Sweetgrass Golf Club (www.sweetgrassgolfclub.com) at Island Resort & Casino and the Delta County Chamber of Commerce seek more than 300 volunteers for the LPGA Symetra Tour’s Island Resort Championship, June 26-28.

A variety of positions are open, including cart drivers, scoreboard assistants, marshals, caddies and hospitality greeters. Jobs are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applicants can state their shift availability and assignment preference at the Chamber website (www.deltami.org) through June 1.

Volunteers receive an official tournament staff shirt, meal ticket, four general admission passes and a round of golf at the award-winning Sweetgrass Golf Club, which hosts the event for a fifth-straight year.

"We’re extremely fortunate to have such a spirited group of volunteers every year,” said Tony Mancilla, Island Resort Casino general manager and event co-chair. “It’s the efforts of these volunteers that help make the tournament experience at Sweetgrass a memorable one for spectators, players and their families.”

“Volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to support the community, and at the same time get the chance to take in the tournament and watch these up-and-coming players compete on an outstanding golf course,” added Delta County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vickie Micheau.

The Island Resort Championship is part of the Potawatomi Cup, a series of four tournaments involving venues with Native American Indian or Potawatomi tribal ties. The player who tallies the best cumulative score in the four events wins $20,000.

Three-day grounds passes to the 54-hole stroke-play tournament are $10 and are available at the Island Showroom on property. Children 17 year and under get in free with a paying parent.

Lee Wybranski Keeps His Record Alive for U.S. Open Posters

Arizona-based artist paints his eighth consecutive commemorative poster for the U.S. Open

(Flagstaff, Ariz.) - The U.S. Open Championship might be coming to the Pacific Northwest for the first time this June, but it is hardly the first time that artist Lee Wybranski has painted the official poster of golf’s national championship.

Chambers Bay will mark the eighth straight time that Wybranski has taken brush in hand to create the official poster for the United States Golf Association. Wybranski’s first U.S. Open poster was created in 2008, when the championship was played at Torrey Pines in Southern California, which like Chambers Bay is a public course.

A native of Philadelphia who now lives and works in Flagstaff, Arizona, Wybranski feels a special kinship to the Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed Chambers Bay because, as he says, “I love links golf. Not only for playing and looking at the course, but to me golf by the water on sandy turf is where the game makes the most sense. I think it will be a very exciting championship this year because of the course - and because our Open has never been to the region. Plus they are sports crazy and I'm curious to see if the ‘12th Man’ somehow shows up in June."

According to the artist, Chambers Bay offers a number of elements that guaranteed a dramatic composition. “The water, the numerous bunkers on the course, and the lone fir that sits behind the 15th green were my bare minimums to include. Plus, I love diagonal compositions, because they provide a great deal of depth and drama and really pull your eyes in.”

But there is something else, something new that makes this course and this poster extra special. “It’s the first time I’ve had the chance to paint a train in any of my work. Trains are a mythical feature of the American West, and they have a long history in golf, running alongside many old links in the UK. By coincidence, the train in the painting is the same line that goes through the center of Flagstaff a block from my studio.”

Work on the painting began more than a year before the championship. “I spent a few days last May doing fieldwork. I always want to be on a site long enough to get one great morning and one great evening of light. I got very lucky with the weather when I was up there. I hope the players are as lucky as I was.”

Wybranski will be signing the posters in the Main Merchandise Pavilion during the week of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, June 11-21.

Golf Channel Posts Most-Watched April Ever

Viewership Momentum Leads to Compelling Stretch, Including World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play, THE PLAYERS Championship and 25 Consecutive Days of Live Golf

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – Golf Channel posted its most-watched April ever and served 16.3 million unique viewers, which was driven by increases across the network’s programming schedule. For 24-hour Total Day (6AM-6AM), 132,000 average viewers per minute were tuned into Golf Channel in April, representing a 2% year-over-year increase compared to April 2014 (130,000) and the network’s most-watched month since August 2013 (138,000), as well as a 53% increase since Golf Channel joined NBC Sports Group, according to data released by The Nielsen Company.

Tourney Time for McConnell Golf

The Web.com Tour’s Rex Hospital Open returns to the TPC at Wakefield, highlighting a run of elite championships contested at McConnell Golf venues across the Carolinas in 2015

(RALEIGH, NC) — The Web.com Tour’s 2015 Rex Hospital Open — scheduled May 25-31 for the 15th consecutive year at Raleigh’s TPC at Wakefield Plantation — highlights a run of nine professional, collegiate, amateur or elite junior level events in April and May alone contested on highly regarded golf courses around the Carolinas owned by Raleigh-based McConnell Golf.

On the April calendar, five tournaments were competed over four of McConnell’s 10 courses. A trio of other McConnell designs joins the fun during the four May events, highlighted by the Rex Hospital Open. In total, 13 major 2015 tournaments will be contested at McConnell Golf venues — capped August 17-23 by the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club Ross Course.

“We pride ourselves on providing a championship test for the finest golfers at every level,” said McConnell Golf Founder and CEO John McConnell, who has incorporated his computer software marketing expertise to help spread the word and coin the McConnell Golf mantra: “Pure Golf for the True Golfer.”

With the recent additions of Brook Valley CC (Greenville, NC) and The Country Club of Asheville (NC), its third Donald Ross layout, McConnell Golf now owns ten 18-hole, private golf courses plus one nine-hole course around the Carolinas.

In other recent events contested over McConnell Golf courses, Tom Fazio’s marvelous Treyburn Country Club in Durham welcomed today’s scholastic stars April 13 at the 9th North Carolina High School Invitational, won by Pinecrest High School in Pinehurst.

Meanwhile, Sedgefield Country Club’s Ross Course played host to the 38th Carolinas Club Pro-Am Championship on April 27. Sedgefield Ross Head Professional Eric Ferguson and member Scott Harvey, fresh off his appearance at The Masters, incorporated both immense skill and local knowledge to win the event with an impressive round of 8-under 63. Treyburn’s Director of Golf Tag Wylie and Tim Myers shot 65 to finish in second place for the second consecutive year. McConnell Golf teams have won three of the past five years.

On April 24, Ryan Sullivan of Winston-Salem claimed his first career eGolf Gateway Tour title at the third-annual Sedgefield Classic. Sullivan’s week on the demanding Sedgefield Country Club Dye Course began with a 3-under 137 total through 36 holes. He used a late birdie to notch his first career tour win and earn the event’s $14,000 first-place prize. Of note, Sullivan also won the inaugural High School Invitational, the only time held at Raleigh Country Club.

Some of the recent high school invitational participants donned their new school colors when Old North State Club in New London hosted the ACC Men’s Golf Championship for the 14th-straight year and 19th time overall. In the 2015 edition, defending champion Georgia Tech made four birdies on the second playoff hole to defeat Clemson. Both teams finished 54 holes with a team score of 19-under 845, forcing a playoff.

At the 2015 ACC Women’s Golf Championship at Sedgefield Ross, Virginia ran away from the competition, posting a 27-under team score to capture the school’s first ACC tourney title. The Lady Cavaliers also became the first champion to come from outside the state of North Carolina.

Along with the Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield on May 25-31, other May events on McConnell Golf courses include the 4A High School Regionals at Raleigh Country Club on May 5, the Symetra Tour Friends of Mission Charity Classic at The Country Club of Asheville on May 15-17 and the 89th Carolinas Women’s Amateur at Treyburn on May 19-21.

On June 16-19, the 19th NC Junior Girls will be contested at Greenville’s Brook Valley Country Club, while the prestigious Cardinal Am returns to Sedgefield Dye on July 17-19. The McConnell Golf Triangle Fourball will be played at both Treyburn and Wakefield on August 15-16.

Proceeds from Nicklaus Golf Ball Sales at Speedway Convenience Stores to Help Sick and Injured Kids

PING G30 driver #1 two months in a row, top-selling model in 2015

(PHOENIX) – Widening its lead as the top-selling driver model (units) from the previous month, the PING G30 driver achieved the #1 sales position in March for units and dollars in the on- and off-course retail channels, according to Golf Datatech LLC, which tracks golf equipment sell-thru data for the United States.

In March, the G30 driver earned a 13.2% share in units (up 23% from February) and 17.46% share in dollars (up 20% from February). For the months of January through March combined, the G30 driver ranks first in units (11.38%) and dollars (15.29%).

Ryder Cup legends support Spain’s bid to bring The 2022 Match to Costa Brava-Barcelona

(RELEASE) - José María Olazábal and Sergio García, two of Spain’s biggest Ryder Cup stars, have given their full support to the country’s bid to bring The 2022 Ryder Cup to Costa Brava-Barcelona.

As all bidding nations prepare to submit their bid dossiers to Ryder Cup Europe, Olazábal and García join forces to describe what a home Ryder Cup would mean to them, and golf in Spain.

Olazábal, who captained the European Team to victory in 2012 and partnered Ryder Cup icon Seve Ballesteros, winning 11 of their 15 matches together, said: “It would be fantastic to have The Ryder Cup at home in 2022. It would be beautiful, especially on the 25th anniversary of Valderrama. We have a Ryder Cup history to be proud of. It would be a great tribute to the contribution that all Spanish players have given to this event.”

At the age of just 19, Sergio García became the youngest player to participate in the revered competition. He has been a member of the European Ryder Cup team a staggering seven times – having been on the winning side five times – and was vice-captain in the 2010 edition.

Speaking about the impact a Spanish Ryder Cup would bring, García said:  “The Ryder Cup means everything to me. It’s the most exciting tournament we have in golf and one of the most exhilarating sporting events on the planet. I hold it very close to my heart.

“It would be truly amazing to have a Ryder Cup in Spain,” he continued. “It’s very important for our new generation. It helped increase participation considerably in 1997 and it would be a great boost for Spanish golf.”

Spain’s bid enjoys unanimous support from both Government and private sector supporters. 2014 Jack Nicklaus Award Winner Adam Svensson Takes Killearn Classic for Second Win in Two Starts

Barry alum one better in Tallahassee than Georgia alum Joey Garber, Virginia Commonwealth alum Lanto Griffin, Middle Tennessee State alum Chas Narramore, and back to back National Championship winner Bobby Wyatt from Alabama

(Tallahassee, Fla.) – Barry alum Adam Svensson (Surrey, British Columbia) has two starts on the SwingThought Tour and now has two wins to show for it. After winning a playoff against fellow Canadian Lucas Kim three weeks earlier at Harbor Hills for his first professional win, Svensson birdied No. 18 on the final day at Killearn Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida to go to 20 under, good enough to capture his second professional win in as many starts, matching SwingThought Tour member and fellow Canadian Albin Choi who accomplished the feat to start the season.

Svensson led Barry University to back to back National Championships as a freshman and a sophomore, earning the Phil Mickelson Award in 2013 as the top freshman in Division II and the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2014 as the Division II Player of the Year. After winning back to back events this season as a junior at Barry, Svensson decided he was ready to turn pro and it has paid off in a big way. Not only did Svensson earn back to back $20,000 1st place prize checks but, just like Choi, he earned an exemption into a Web.com Tour event, his being the 2015 Knoxville News Sentinel Open to be held in August later this year.

Svensson’s win did not come without drama in what some are calling the most exciting event in the history of the tour. Final round tee times started at 7:30am with the leaders going off at 9am. The leaders had been on the course for 30 minutes before a lightning storm, with tornado warnings, made its way to the area pulling players off the course. Six hours and 35 minutes later, and with just enough estimated daylight left to finish the event, play resumed. As the final group stood on 18 tee, with dusk fast approaching, it appeared bad weather would roll in again and perhaps revert the event back to being a 54-hole event and washing out the final round. The weather, and darkness, held off just long enough for the event to be concluded.

Five players finished just a shot back of Svensson, one being tied for the lead in the clubhouse at the time, three having an opportunity to go to 20 under on 18, and one needing a par ... all to force a playoff.

Former University of Georgia star Joey Garber was first up. Playing in the fourth-to-final group, Garber went on a final-nine tear shooting 4-under through the first eight holes and having a putt on 18 for birdie that would’ve put him at -20. His putt just missed and put him in the clubhouse at -19, leaving him to watch the final three groups finish and see if he’d be in the mix.

Web.com Tour member and Virginia Commonwealth alum Lanto Griffin was next up. Playing with Svensson in the third-to-last group, Griffin eagled 17 and then made an unbelievable 40 foot putt for birdie on 18 to go to -19 in the clubhouse, and a share of the lead for the moment with Svensson and Garber.

It was then Svensson’s turn as he drained his 10-foot putt for birdie to finish at -20, leaving Griffin and Garber a shot back after incredible finishes.

Web.com Tour member Chas Narramore was next to challenge, playing in the next-to-last group. Narramore was tied for the lead briefly before a double bogey on 12 set him back. Showing resilience, the former Middle Tennessee State star birdied three of his next holes and asking if the leader board (showing Svensson at -20) was correct as he stood over his birdie putt on 18. After an affirmative, Narramore stroked what appeared to be a perfect putt that just slid off to the side, leaving him a shot back at -19.

Next up was our final group with former Alabama back-to-back National Champion Bobby Wyatt at -19 and former Virginia star Bruce Woodall, who led the event after three rounds, at -20. Both players had just birdied 17 and Wyatt would need birdie on 18 to match Svensson and Woodall and he almost accomplished the feat. After hitting his approach shot just off the back of 18 green, Wyatt hit an incredible chip that was headed toward the hole but came up just inches short, as the crowd exasperated, leaving him to finish at -19. Woodall however found trouble off the tee. His drive had just found a right-side fairway bunker and, after receiving a ruling, he was only able to layup - leaving himself approximately 50 yards out and needing to get up and down to force a playoff. After Wyatt tapped in his par putt, Woodall would attempt his putt for par and a possible playoff with Svensson. It was not to be, however, as his putt just missed, leaving him at -19 and securing the win for Svensson at -20.

Svensson received $20,000 and an exemption into the Web.com Tour 2015 Knoxville News Sentinel Open. Garber, Griffin, Narramore, Woodall, and Wyatt each received $7,100 for tying for 2nd. Defending Champion Clayton Rask out of the University of Minnesota finished at -18 and tied for 7th with Kent State alum Mackenzie Hughes, each earning $4,230. Altogether the purse for the event was $140,000 with 59 players making the cut to play on Friday and Saturday.

Rory McIlroy Makes a Surprise Visit at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) – While Tiger Woods was spending time with young athletes in Asia, Rory McIlroy was at one of the top junior golf tournaments in the world, the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley. The top 54 juniors from around the world competed in a three-round tournament with Nike’s PGA Tour Van on site to fit the juniors into clubs or adjust their clubs based on course conditions.

On Friday, McIlroy made a surprise visit to Sage Valley, located in Graniteville, South Carolina, to put on a clinic for the young athletes. He talked through the ages that were portrayed in the Nike film "Ripple" and described what aspects of his game he worked on during those various stages throughout his life. Rotating through several clubs in his bag, the juniors asked McIlroy to hit specific golf shots such as a draw and a fade with his driver, a stinger 3-iron and other shots in his arsenal.

Later in the evening there was an intimate sit down discussion where McIlroy talked about his junior career, the importance of setting goals and having role models who inspire, much as Woods did for McIlroy in his youth.

"It wasn't that long ago that I was able to meet some of my idols and the athletes I looked up to during my junior years,” McIlroy said. “I remember how special that was for me. To have that opportunity now with some of the juniors here is incredible. There is some responsibility that comes with being a role model and you have to accept that, embrace it and be the best you can be."

The juniors finished the evening with McIlroy gathered around a couch watching him play his soon-to-be released EA Sports video game. After signing cell phones, t-shirts and shoes, McIlroy headed out to prepare for this week’s tournament, while the juniors returned to their cottages to rest before their final round.

As McIlroy was making his surprise visit at Sage Valley, Woods was in Asia inspiring young athletes in China on Friday and in Japan on Sunday. During his visit, Woods conducted golf clinics and interacted with young athletes, while sharing his knowledge and love of the game with golf fans, athletes and members of the media.

Just as McIlroy looked up to Woods as a junior golfer, the ripple effect continued this past weekend with Woods and McIlroy inspiring the next generation of golf athletes around the globe.

EWGA Opens First Collegiate Chapter at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore

(Palm Beach Gardens, FL) - The Executive Women's Golf Association announces the opening of its first-ever collegiate chapter at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on April 30, 2015.

"This is a milestone as we welcome UMES as the first collegiate chapter of the EWGA," says CEO Pam Swensen. "We anticipate this to be the first of many collegiate chapters to come. EWGA excels at creating opportunities for women to use golf personally and professionally. The chapter launch is part of UMES's 'Pink on the Green' initiative to get more women playing golf. On April 30, 2015, UMES will host an all campus event from 11AM - 2PM at its driving range to promote the game of golf to their students, faculty and staff. At noon, a ceremony with EWGA representatives and University dignitaries will culminate with the signing of the first collegiate Chapter Affiliation Agreement.

An early evening gathering for women in the community is also planned. Anyone interested in learning more about the game of golf is invited to the University driving range from 5-7 PM, April 30th. Golf professionals and EWGA leaders from the nearby EWGA Eastern Shore, Maryland Chapter will be present to talk about the many benefits of golf and upcoming learning and playing opportunities around the area.

Powell, a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service Degree from UMES, was awarded EWGA's 2002 Leadership Award recognizing her outstanding contributions to women's golf. Named the First Lady of Golf by the PGA in 2003, her history making continues, as she becomes one of the first female members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Architect Chris Wilczynski to Execute Warwick Hills’ Tree Management Plan

(GRAND BLANC, Mich.) – Golfers at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club are about to see the light.

That’s because the esteemed club, venue for PGA Tour’s Buick Open from 1958-69 and again from 1978-2009, has engaged CW Golf Architecture to oversee an extensive tree management program. The project will remedy turf issues on several over-shaded greens and improve overall course playability and aesthetics by reopening fairway corridors that have become obstructed by encroaching tree growth.

“I’m thrilled to be working with a club the caliber of Warwick Hills,” said Chris Wilczynski, ASGCA, whose five-year-old firm CW Golf Architecture continues to buck the trend by prospering during a downturn in golf course development. Wilczynski has forged a unique alliance for the Warwick Hills project, partnering with renown certified arborist/agronomist Julie Stachecki.

“We complement each other really well,” said Wilczynski, who like Stachecki is a Michigan State University alumnus. “Julie contributes to the project analysis from the viewpoint of tree and turfgrass science. I contribute from the golf course architect’s perspective of playability and aesthetics.”

Stachecki, owner of consultancy Site Specific, Inc., frequently has worked independently with golf courses, but this is her first collaborative project with a golf course architect.

“I would love to see this kind of relationship grow and develop throughout the golf industry,” said Stachecki. “Chris and I both have the same goal – to make the property more functional and improve the quality of the golf experience with less future maintenance.  He shares his vision of how the course can be altered for improvement, and I share with him my expertise on which trees should stay or go, taking into account the tree species, structure and health.

“What’s been fun,” she said, “is that Chris is very willing to listen and ask why. He’s genuinely interested in understanding the choices.”

Wilczynski is quick to acknowledge the input. “Working with Julie, I’ve learned a ton about trees,” he said. “She has truly broadened my knowledge and my skill sets as a professional golf course architect.”

James Gilmore Harrison designed Warwick Hills’ original course, which opened in 1957. The following year it hosted the inaugural Buick Open, won by Billy Casper. The current layout is the product of a 1967-68 redesign by Joe Lee. Tiger Woods won the last (and his third) Buick Open at Warwick Hills in 2009.

John DeMarco is chairman of Warwick Hills’ Greens Committee, which reviewed proposals from seven golf course architects for the tree management project.  “We selected Chris and Julie because of their team approach, expertise and qualifications,” said DeMarco.  “They listened well and were very passionate about their work and desire to help us improve.  Plus they were local. They made it clear they would be hands-on.”

An inventory conducted by Wilczynski and Stachecki revealed that the property contains more than 1,600 trees; they recommended 400 be removed or pruned. During this spring’s Phase One of the project, 124 trees – the most egregious offenders – will be removed and 29 trees will be pruned. Roughly 45 new trees will be planted in strategic locations in future phases.

“The plan that Chris and Julie presented to our club was very thorough,” said DeMarco. “They came across as very professional, not only in their presentation, but also in their responses to questions from the committee and membership.

“They devised a plan that was based on fact, not emotion,” said DeMarco, noting that trees are objects of beauty to which golfers often form attachments.  “Evaluations were based on how each tree interfaced with the turf, and how it contributed or detracted from the playability and aesthetics of the course.”

DeMarco said Warwick Hills wants to introduce strategic changes to the course over a 3- to 7-year time frame. “The tree evaluation prompted us to take a further look at updating the golf course,” he said. “It won’t be a redesign, but an update that will enhance the original Joe Lee design.”

Shade issues have vexed superintendent Phil Owen, GCSAA, on eight different greens over the years. Putting surfaces are affected to varying degrees, and on some holes the reduced sunlight has been detrimental to green surrounds, where players find themselves faced with delicate short shots off bare lies, or having to hit difficult low-trajectory shots under tree branches.

“I’ve never gone through a comprehensive tree project like this,” said Owen, who has cared for Warwick Hills’ turf for 25 years. “But other superintendents I’ve talked to who have been part of similar projects all told me the results will be like night and day. Some of their worst greens turned into some of their best. I hope that’s what happens with us.”

Owen said he began advising club management 10 years ago that some trees were becoming problematic. “The superintendent is the first person to notice,” said Owen. “But the situation has to become noticeably worse before management senses the urgency, and then members need to be convinced. You have to be persistent.

“Our members know me and trust my judgment, but sometimes it takes someone from the outside to come in and verify your concerns,” he said. “It’s early in the project, but I’ve been impressed by how Chris listens. Not only does he ask my opinion, but he welcomes it.”

The architect, the arborist and the superintendent are unanimous in their opinion that Warwick Hills was over-planted in the 1980s and ‘90s. “I’m sure the intentions were good,” said Wilczynski, “but unfortunately a lot of those trees were set too close to greens and other playable areas.”

Stachecki said strategically removing or pruning trees will result in more southern and eastern sun exposure for Warwick Hills’ greens, which will lessen the effects of harsh winters such as Southeast Michigan has experienced the last two years. A succession of hard freezes and rapid thaws resulted in abnormal ice buildup on greens, which effectively suffocated the putting surfaces. Warwick Hills had winter damage to 16 greens last year, forcing the club to use 10 temporary greens into early August of the 2014 golf season. Stachecki said more Southern sun exposure during the winter months can mitigate the effects of ice buildup, and more Eastern sun exposure promotes greens health during the summer months.

Elsewhere on the course, trees have encroached on sight lines and corridors to the fairway landing areas and greens.

“At many older courses, trees have been planted without long range vision,” said Wilczynski. “When evaluating the result, we have to extrapolate the designer’s original intent.”

Wilczynski said trees are often positioned to fill a space or mitigate safety concerns on parallel holes. “But usually they’re planted too close together because of a desire for instant results,” he said.

Wilczynski and Stachecki said it’s common for golf course superintendents to “get pushback” from members and golfers when they propose removing trees. “We’ve been impressed with the process the Greens Committee at Warwick Hills has gone through to educate the membership.  They’ve done it the right way.”

It’s a collaborative process Wilczynski always tries to foster with clients. “The results are always better when everyone’s on the same page, working toward the same goal and vision” he said.

Tiger Woods Excites Golf Athletes in Japan

Woods wraps up his visit to Asia with a stop in Tokyo

(RELEASE) - Tiger Woods followed up his visit to Shanghai with a stop in Tokyo to further inspire young golf athletes and help energize the sport in Asia.

Woods conducted a clinic for 72 lucky golfers at the Hanz Golf Club in Yokohama. The fans were selected through an online write-in contest where they shared their passion and commitment for the sport of golf. Woods took the group through his normal warm-up routine and provided insights about achieving both distance and accuracy.

“I have a passion for coaching,” said Woods. “It’s always fun for me to share my insights and see an immediate improvement in those who want to learn. It’s like watching a light bulb switch on. It’s a cool feeling.”

Before meeting with golf fans at the Nike Store in Harajuku, Woods surprised fans by hosting a hitting contest at Tokyo’s famed Shinjuku train station. With more than 750,000 people passing through every day, the Shinjuku station is considered to be the busiest in the world. Woods competed with three golfers in a lob-shot contest and a driving distance competition at the center of the busy railway station.

“My trip to Japan was a lot of fun. It was a perfect ending to an amazing trip,” said Woods. “Nike is a great partner in bringing energy to this sport that I love. With this visit to Asia, I hope we were able to influence many to either take up the sport for the first time or inspire those who already play golf, to play more.”

Titleist is No. 1 Ball at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

(RELEASE) - Despite some wet weather on the bayou, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans is under way and the scoreboard is lighting up as many of the world's best players are taking it low at TPC Louisiana.

One player who got of to a fast start was Titleist Brand Ambassador Brendon De Jonge, who equaled the low round of the day on Thursday with a bogey-free, 8-under 64.  After a 78-minute rain delay, De Jonge was able to attack the 7,425-yard Pete Dye layout by hitting fairways and firing right at pins.

“Yeah, it got a little tricky after the rain,” De Jonge explained, “and it got muddy out there. But still the course was there for the taking.”

Pro V1x loyalist David Hearn also took advantage of the conditions, shooting a 7-under 65.

“I hit it on a lot of fairways and gave myself a lot of chances from there. Even though it's generous off the tee, you have to put yourself in good spots.  You can't be in the rough out there.”

Considering the opening-round scores and the prospect of continued soft conditions, fans could be treated to a shootout this weekend in the Big Easy. And to go low, the vast majority of players will be teeing up a Titleist golf ball.

A total of 103 players in this week's field are playing a Pro V1 or Pro V1x, more than five times the nearest competitor with 20 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist is also No. 1 in the sand, lob and approach wedges category (164) as well as putters (55).
