The Traveling Golfer Visits Tucson

Tucson and Casino del Sol Resort Featured on January Traveling Golfer Show

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) - When people think of golf in Arizona, the first locations that usually come to mind are Phoenix or Scottsdale. But, if they travel a bit farther south, they will discover a treasure of desert golf riches in Tucson.

That's exactly what the Traveling Golfer did, as part of a 24-man Ryder Cup-style trip to Tucson. It proved to be an eye-opening experience that sparked stories that will be re-told for years.

The base of operations was the spectacular Casino del Sol Resort, on the south side of Tucson. Great restaurants, a lively casino and large luxurious guest rooms made the stay memorable.

And then there was the golf, which exceeded all expectations. The new Notah Begay-designed Sewailo golf course, adjacent to Casino del Sol, is a stunning example of modern desert golf architecture. The Westin La Paloma and Arizona National golf courses provided stunning views from the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The recently renovated Randolph North golf course, which dates back to 1924, is an exciting example of classic design.

"For a lot of the people on the trip, this was their first visit to the Tucson area," reported Traveling Golfer host Tony Leodora. "They were blown away by the resort, the quality of the golf courses, the culture and the food. It was definitely a different golf experience for most."

The episode from Tucson begins airing January 1 and runs throughout the month on The Traveling Golfer Network ... including the new Golf Director Network (see full list of sites on www.travelinggolfervideo.com). It also will air on Monday, January 12 as part of the Press Box television show in Myrtle Beach, 5 to 7 p.m. on HTC Ch. 4, and as part of the Inside Golf television show on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia and Comcast SportsNet in Baltimore/Washington at the end of January.

Responding to golfers' never-ending demands to learn more about interesting golf courses and golf resorts across the country and around the world, well-traveled host Tony Leodora created the Traveling Golfer so he could take viewers on video golf trips to some of the most exciting golf locations.

The Traveling Golfer appears as a series of monthly shows hosted by Leodora, who has 15 years of experience in televised golf shows. The featured destination stays on the website for one month, before being replaced by a new show. The old shows are archived on the home website, www.travelinggolfervideo.com.

A network of golf websites, of all sizes, has been created to host the show. The show has its own website -- www.travelinggolfervideo.com. The network of additional websites includes www.golftalklive.net, the website of the award-winning GolfTalk Live radio show that also is hosted by Leodora.  Affiliate websites that also air the show are www.thegolfdirector.com, www.myphillygolf.com, www.sportsnetwork.com, www.louguzzi.com, www.yetigolf.net, www.golfbuckscounty.com, www.phillygolffiles.com, www.playaroundgolf.net, www.awaywegogolf.com, mynegm.com, www.golfxpress72.com and americangolfer.blogspot.com.

He has sold Antigua, in addition to working as a Golf Professional at Ibis Golf and Country Club in West Palm Beach Florida. Jeff has also managed and grown sales in his role as assistant golf professional and shop manager of the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.

Andy Hyjek attended the University of Tennessee and played on the golf team there. He got his start in sales by launching Taylor Made Golf Co. with Gary Adams, then went on to work for other great companies like FootJoy, Reebok-Greg  Norman, Yonex and Sun Mountain.

Co-founders Bret Blakely and Steve Coulton are dedicated to making golf more enjoyable to the masses. OnCore is based in Buffalo, NY and is sold in all 50 States and 21 Countries worldwide.

Year in Review(s) - 2014

We were very fortunate during 2014 to test and review quite a few products. We fell in love with the Cobra Bio Cell and Bio Cell+ drivers and dove in head first with all the features on the Leupold GX-4i rangefinder. Loudmouth Golf continued to impress with their over-the-top brand and CHASE54 added another level to the fashion-forward golfer.

One of our favorite companies - 3 Up Golf - expanded its offerings this year with the 2S14, joining the impressive 3F12. A few companies took personalization to new heights, as well. It has never been so easy to add a logo to a ball as it is with Golfballs.com and Teecil (part pencil/part tee) makes an excellent corporate gift for outings. Photo Ball Markers may be our favorite item to personalize, however. What could be better than looking at your favorite person's smile before making a putt?

There were far too many new products for us to list them all - from Daphne's Headcovers and Nexbelt to New Balance golf shoes and TruRoll Putters - but we enjoyed sharing our thoughts with fellow golfers.

Looking forward to 2015, we're already excited about the possibilities of GAME GOLF and curious to see where additional technology takes us.

Happy New Year!

Another Honor for Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course

Laredo’s Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course Cited as One of “The Most Beautiful Courses in Texas” by GOLF Magazine

(Laredo, TX) — The Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course, designed by world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., has captured yet another accolade.

Earlier this year GOLF Magazine published its ranking of the “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” along with a listing of the best courses in each state.  Of the 20 Texas public facilities cited, The MAX earned the 15th position.

Other significant rating awards for The MAX include Golf Digest’s designation as “One of the Best New Courses of 2013;” and Golfweek’s listing in 2013 and 2014 as “One of the Best Municipal Courses in the U.S.”

U.S. Recreational Golf Association Launches New Website Aimed at Making Golf More Fun

(Carlsbad, CA) - The U.S. Recreational Golf Association (USRGA), founded in May of 2014 by industry veterans, John B. Hoeflich and David L. Felker, announced the launch of a new version of its website www.usrga.org.

The new site displays a modern intuitive feel and updated content including membership information, golf etiquette, the USRGA Rules of Golf, blogs, equipment reviews, deals and promotions for members.

"Golfers are some of the most active participants in seeking information about their sport on the worldwide web," said USRGA founder David Felker. "Having a vibrant interactive website is a key to spreading the USRGA message to recreational and serious golfers worldwide. Our new website provides a forum for golfers to access simplified rules, special deals only available to our members, and information on equipment and ways to make the game more fun."

"There are 40 million golfers worldwide. A small percentage of those players have a handicap and play by the USGA and R&A Rules of Golf and most never play in high level competitions," states John B. Hoeflich, Executive Director. "For too long these golfers have lacked representation when it comes to determining the etiquette and rules for play and equipment that more accurately reflect the way they play the game. The USRGA is now that voice."

The USRGA appreciates any and all support from the golf community and wants to work in partnership with all organizations and companies to help grow the game of golf. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the USRGA should go to www.usrga.org for more details or to enroll directly. Those wanting to become a Friend or Sponsor of the USRGA are asked to contact info@usrga.org to request more information.

About the US Recreational Golf Association
Founded in 2014 the USRGA is an organization serving the needs of recreational golfers, golf courses and golf companies. Its focus is on working to grow recreational golf awareness and participation. The USRGA was established to create a community, forum and voice for recreational golfers who embody the original spirit of the game. The USRGA will endeavor to grow the game by making it more fun, faster pace, less expensive and less complicated for the majority of golfers who love the game but do not participate in competitions played under the USGA Rules of Golf. From its headquarters in Carlsbad, California the association provides information services and benefits for its members, developed and maintains simplified USRGA Etiquette and Rules of Golf and offers deals and promotions to enhance members' enjoyment of the game. Membership in the USRGA is free and golfers and non-golfers are urged to find out more about the USRGA at www.usrga.org or on Facebook (US Recreational Golf Association) or Twitter at @usrga.

Cure Putters Set to Introduce 5 New Models at 2015 PGA Merchandise Show

(Flagler Beach, FL) - Cure's RX Series Putters have been gaining a lot of attention from the Tour Players, and the company has recently been featured on both the Golf Channel and BACK9NETWORK.

Today, Cure Putters announced that they will be introducing five new putters in Booth #801 at the 2015 PGA Merchandise Show, scheduled for January 21-23, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida as well as participating in the Demo Day, Tuesday, January 20th at Orange County National GC.

"We've gained a lot of momentum over this last year and proven that our unique Higher MOI design combined with adjustability and customization will benefit anyone from high handicappers to TOUR players and everyone in between," said CEO of Cure Putters, Jim McCarthy, "With the feedback and lab testing we've done over the last 12 months, we've come out with five phenomenal new RX Series putters that will appeal to a wider range of players. We are redefining the category of High MOI putters with some smaller profile TOUR models, and more traditional designs - A lot of golfers think you have to use a big mallet or a heavy putter to get the increased stability and forgiveness. We've got a blade coming out with more MOI than the leading mallets!"

Cure RX Series putters all feature an Extremely High MOI design, which is very stable and offers incredible forgiveness for much greater accuracy and distance control, even on extreme mishits. The adjustable weighting system allows a far greater range of weight than any other putter on the market, allowing the golfer to find the perfect weight to suit their stroke and tempo. The Triangulation Alignment, invented by Deane Beman, helps you line up your putt like an arrow for deadly accuracy. With a higher center of gravity and lower loft, Cure Putters deliver a superior roll - getting the ball rolling sooner, helping it stay on the intended line. Cure Putters' innovative design takes several problematic variables out of the equation and offers incredible forgiveness and control, resulting in a tighter shot dispersion. Golfers of every skill level will putt more consistently, build confidence and achieve better results with a Cure RX Series putter.

For more information on Cure Putters visit www.cureputters.com.

Product Review: CHASE54

From left: Billie, Clooney and Grant from CHASE54
Gone are the days of ugly, ill-fitting golf shirts (at least we hope they’re gone). You remember the victorious 1999 US Ryder Cup team, right? Thankfully, companies like CHASE54 are combining fashion-forward appearance with state-of-the art fabrics to create incredible clothing that looks as great as it feels.

From left: Dylan and Luke
CHASE54 refers to 54 as the “perfect score.” The designers’ pursuit of perfection has led to myriad pieces as functional on the course as they are stylish off it. The “StaCrisp” pocket, brass collar stays and pewter buttons are just a few details that set this brand apart.

Some of the other technology CHASE54 boasts include:
* Dry Fuze - a patented moisture-wicking fabric keeping players cool and dry;
* Sorona by DuPont - a renewable sourced fiber made from corn, bringing color brilliance, stain and odor resistance, and stretch recovery;
* High Gauge – a micropolyester unlike any other. Finer yarns and a tighter weave equal featherweight top performance comfort; and
* Heat Retention – this actively absorbs energy from the sun, transforming it into heat to stay warm without heavy, thick insulation.

We’ve tried various pieces from the CHASE54 collection and have yet to find a flaw. The shirts (above from left: Billie, Clooney, Grant) and jackets (pictured: Dylan, Luke) are incredibly comfortable and meticulously detailed.

Far too often we find jackets that look great, but are constricting on the course. At CHASE54, appearance jibes perfectly with performance. And, considering the shirt you wear on a hot day can be just as important as the driver you tee off with, it’s nice to know Dry Fuze will keep the shirt flowing, as opposed to sticking to your sweaty skin and binding your swing.

Wearing CHASE54 on the golf course is tantamount to making the statement: I look great, feel great and will play great. Now you just need your confidence to coincide with lower scores.

Check out everything they have to offer at www.chase54.com.

Henderson, a native of Smiths Falls, Ontario (pop. 9,000), said that she’s competed at a consistently high level for years, thanks in part to an experienced PING team that fits her with technology suited to her individual game. “I have a comfort level with PING because they spend the time to understand my game, and their clubs are awesome. PING clubs make me longer, more consistent and give me the confidence I’ll need to succeed as a professional. I’m excited to be part of the PING team.”

As part of a multi-year agreement, Henderson will display PING logos on her hat, carry a PING staff bag and play 14 PING clubs. Financial terms and the length of the agreement were not disclosed.

GCAA Interviews K-State, SwingThought.com Tour Alumnus, FedExCup Points Leader Robert Streb

Streb was victorious earlier this fall at The McGladrey Classic and currently sits atop the FedExCup Standings

(Norman, Okla.) - The Golf Coaches Association of America, in cooperation with its long-time corporate partner, the SwingThought.com Tour, will feature a monthly Q&A with former collegians who are currently playing or have played on the SwingThought.com tour. Long considered the premier developmental tour in the United States, thousands of former college players have started their professional careers there. Hundreds of SwingThought.com Tour alumni have or continue to play on the PGA TOUR.

This month we spoke with Robert Streb, a SwingThought.com Tour alumnus currently playing on the PGA TOUR. Streb was victorious earlier this fall at The McGladrey Classic and currently sits atop the FedExCup Standings. He played collegiately at Kansas State University, where he had 12 career top-5 finishes and was named an All-American in 2009.

GCAA: How long have you been playing golf? At what point did you realize you wanted to play golf professionally?

Streb: I have been playing golf since I was about 2 or 3 years old, I used to tag along to the driving range with my dad when my mom was traveling for work. I started thinking about professional golf toward the end of high school and start of college but didn’t take the idea seriously until my last year of college. I had a good last season and it made feel like if I worked hard I might be able to reach the PGA TOUR.

GCAA: You played collegiately at Kansas State, where you were named an All-American. What about your time playing in college do you think has helped you the most as a professional?

Streb: Our coach Tim Norris played on the PGA TOUR for 9 years, which kind of fueled me to want to keep playing. I would generally ask questions about what the courses were like and what I needed to improve to succeed. Also, playing against some of the best in the country at conference every year also fueled the desire to improve.

GCAA: Is there something you know now that you wish you had known when playing collegiate golf?

Streb: How to better manage my game and my misses. I am still learning but feel like I have a much better grasp on it now.

GCAA: What about the college experience, outside of golf, helped prepare you for life as a professional golfer?

Streb: I met my wife there, which was a big bonus! I feel like she has helped my game improve. She has helped me with my temperament and getting away from the game when I am tired after a long stretch.

GCAA: You played on both the SwingThought.com Tour (NGA Tour) and Web.com Tour before playing on the PGA TOUR. What did the chances to play on those tours mean to you and how did they impact your game?

Streb: I was not sure exactly what I was getting into when I started on the SwingThought.com Tour. The Tour was a tremendous help to me because I realized how many great players are out there! In addition, I learned how to manage my schedule, travel, and how to practice. I knew that there was a pedigree of players that started on the SwingThought.com Tour and were succeeding at the highest level.

The Web.com Tour was a shorter stint but also a nice building block as well. I didn’t have great status but kind of hit this hot streak and before I knew it I was right in the thick of it to get my PGA TOUR card. On the Web.com Tour the scheduling and travel gets a little more complex with the luxury of equipment trailers and more time management.

GCAA: What are some of your best memories of your time on the SwingThought.com Tour?

Streb: It was really nice when my wife could come out and travel. I still have plenty of friends from when I played out there and I still keep in touch with the Tour staff. I also met some great people in the pro-ams that we are still good friends with. There is a lot of camaraderie out there, which is comforting on the road.

GCAA: Have you changed the way you prepare for a tournament at all between your time playing in college and now on the PGA TOUR?

Streb: Yes, it has changed quite a lot over the years. My warm up is still very similar but I feel like I practice differently and more efficiently. It takes a little time to figure out what works for you and how to prepare. I still hardly ever write anything in my yardage book and my caddie gives me a hard time about it, and rightfully so!

GCAA: You had your first PGA TOUR win earlier this year at The McGladrey Classic and are also sitting atop the FedExCup Standings. How does the early season success set you up for the remainder of the season?

Streb: I feel like the quick start has opened some really cool doors for 2015. I earned an exemption into the Masters (my first major), The PGA Championship, and the WGC at Firestone. Leading the FedExCup is something I didn’t really expect but every golfer is striving for. I am hoping to continue the good play and hope to be able to make a run at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

GCAA: What are some of your interests outside of golf? Do you find that you need some time away from the course now and then?

Streb: I took about a 2 week break after the fall season and did not touch my clubs. I feel like everyone needs a break at some point to recharge their batteries. I like to follow Kansas State sports, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. In my off time we hang out with our family and we are pretty busy preparing for our little girl due Feb. 9!

GCAA: What advice would you offer current collegiate golfers that would like to turn professional?

Streb: To ask as many questions as you can from current professionals, and try to tee it up in a couple tournaments that pros are competing in. Most importantly, enjoy the golf and don’t make it feel like work.

Golfers are always looking for the hot, new driver, but too often suffer from sticker shock when looking at the latest models. And weight positioned in the rear center of the sole of creates a deep center of gravity for easy launch and greater forgiveness on off-center hits. The internal sole design incorporates additional weight in the heel and toe to maximize stability and performance.

What does all this mean? In a nutshell, the Tour Edge Hot Launch offers premium performance at a budget-friendly price point. Robert Trent Jones II Renovations Earn Impressive Awards

Poppy Hills, SentryWorld Named To 2014 “Best” Lists By Major Publications

(Palo Alto, Calif.) – Two renovations by Robert Trent Jones II Golf Architects (RTJ II) – at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach and SentryWorld Golf Club in Wisconsin – have been named to the “Best of the Year” lists by both GOLF and Golf Digest magazines.

Poppy Hills, originally built by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1986, is named 2014 “Best Semi-Private Renovation” by GOLF in its January edition, which followed an honor for best Newly Remodeled Courses by Golf Digest in November. SentryWorld, an RTJ II original from 1989, also earned an honor for best Newly Remodeled Courses by Golf Digest in November.

Poppy Hills, owned and operated by the Northern California Golf Association, began its extensive, 13-month renovation in March 2013, reopening for public play on April 4, 2014. Each hole was returned to its natural elevation along the forest floor, doglegs and contours were softened, and all 18 greens were redesigned.

Jones introduced native waste areas that help reduce irrigated turf by nearly 25 percent. Drainage and irrigation were updated, and the entire course was sand capped, further promoting firm and fast conditions year-round.

Co-host of AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 to 2009, Poppy Hills returned to tour competition only five months after reopening, hosting the 2014 Nature Valley First Tee Open, a Champions Tour event.

SentryWorld, which blazed the trail as Wisconsin’s first destination golf course, was renovated in 2013 by the RTJ II team. Upgrades, improvements, and changes to the 200-acre course included everything from its layout, greens, turfgrasses, and bunkers, to its irrigation system and water features.
Regarded as the premier parkland golf course in the state, SentryWorld is wall-to-wall turf, except for No. 16, its famous “flower hole.”

These are among the latest honors for RTJ II courses, which have appeared on all of the most respected “best of the best” rankings for the past five decades. A global leader and innovator in all aspects of golf course design, from master planning through design implementation, RTJ II serves as a trustee of the great tradition of golf course architecture. Its passion and commitment is to building environmentally responsible golf courses that are challenging, innovative, and enjoyable to play.

ANNIKA Course Design Announces First European Project

Family-Friendly ANNIKA Course at Estonian Golf & Country Club to Break Ground in 2016

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – ANNIKA Course Design – Hall-of-Fame golfer Annika Sorenstam’s golf course architecture business – announces it will design its first course in Europe at Estonian Golf & Country Club.

Located 20 minutes outside Estonia’s capital city of Tallinn, the ANNIKA Course is part of a coming-soon, seaside, family-leisure resort and spa. Annika is currently drafting course plans with European Golf Design (EGD), the golf course design company of the European Tour and IMG. Ground-breaking is scheduled for 2016; plans call for the course to open in concert with the resort’s first 50 rooms in 2019.

Annika was selected both for the caliber of her design work – she has designed five courses worldwide to date – and her appreciation of a project targeting families and golf tourists from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

“It’s exciting to be designing my first golf course in Europe, especially one that is close to home,” says Annika, a native of Sweden and 10-time major champion. “The golf industry has been talking a lot about the need to develop golf facilities that are more flexible and family friendly, and Estonian Golf & Country Club is actually making it happen.

“My objective is to create a course that good golfers will find strategic, competitive and visually appealing, while the design will utilize a variety of forward tees to make it equally enjoyable and engaging for newer golfers and young players. Ultimately, the layout will offer great versatility, from tournament play to resort golf, giving all golfers, no matter how far they hit the ball, a world-class experience.”

The new 18-hole course will replace the club’s existing nine-hole Stone Course, and will complement its 18-hole Sea Course, host of European qualifying for the 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup. The Sea Course has been ranked among the Top 100 courses in Continental Europe by Golf World (U.K.).

Sited on gently rolling terrain above a limestone escarpment that drops down to a pine forest and the Sea Course, the new ANNIKA layout will command outstanding views over the Rebala National Heritage Area.

Featuring long, native grasses and firm turf, the course will have a links-like look and feel. Tees will be strategically situated with the tournament course measuring approximately 7,050 yards. Forward tees will create an enjoyable 4,375-yard course for juniors and new golfers.

“I first met Annika in 2011 to discuss designing our second course and she immediately understood and empathized with our vision to further develop Estonian Golf & Country Club into an international leisure resort and spa,” says Hanno Kross, Estonian Golf & Country Club Chief Executive.

“As well as being one of the most successful golfers of all time, she is family oriented and coaches young people, so she brings a contemporary perspective to the needs of a modern resort and the type of golf course and facilities that are required.

“When I first showed her pictures of the landscape overlooking the Gulf of Finland and the Jägala River Delta, it reminded her of where she grew up and so I think she immediately felt at home with this project.”

Estonian Golf & Country Club is part of the European Tour Properties network of world-class golf venues. Already home to a successful real estate development, it plans to construct a 150-room hotel in three phases and develop leisure amenities including a spa and tennis academy.

Esquire Network to Premiere 'The Short Game' Series On Demand Beginning Dec. 22

Documentary Series Follows Youth Prodigy Golfers and their Parents Throughout 2014 Tournament Season

(LOS ANGELES) - Esquire Network will premiere the entire original series THE SHORT GAME On Demand beginning December 22. This will mark the first time the network has premiered an entire series On Demand prior to its network premiere (Tuesday, January 20 at 10/9c). Beginning December 22, all 10 episodes of THE SHORT GAME will be viewable on the network's mobile app Esquire TV NOW and online at esquiretv.com/now, and on multiple MVPD partners, including Comcast, Charter, Time Warner, DirectTV, Verizon and Cablevision.

"We know that our viewers want to watch our programming whenever and wherever they choose," said Adam Stotsky, Esquire Network president. "And THE SHORT GAME is the perfect series to premiere in its entirety On Demand. The relationships that these young golfers have with their fathers - who also serve as their caddies - is incredibly intense, and the high-stakes nature of the competition is both dramatic and compelling. You'll want to watch until the very end."

THE SHORT GAME follows eight of the very best 7-and 8-year-old golfers in the United States as they navigate school, family life and the series of tournaments that lead to the ultimate test of skill and dedication - the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. These young phenoms hailing from a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds, face real pressures on the course from their own sense of competitiveness, but also from their parents.

In early 2014, another Esquire Network original series, FRIDAY NIGHT TYKES, started a national conversation about children and competitive sports. THE SHORT GAME continues that discussion, taking an in-depth look at each of the golfers and their families to learn more about what this level of play means for them emotionally, financially -- and who has the most at stake, the kids or their parents.

In the quest to be the best golfer in the world, is this too much pressure for kids this age, or are they just going for their dream hole-in-one?

THE SHORT GAME is produced for Esquire Network by Goodbye Pictures, with Rich Bye serving as Executive Producer, and Andy Robertson as Co-Executive Producer. Rafael Marmor and Christopher Leggett serve as Executive Producers for Delirio Films. Josh Braun and Lisa Singer Haese also serve as Executive Producers.
