North Carolina’s Outer Banks Open for Golfers and Visitors

Kilmarlic Golf Club
(OUTER BANKS, N.C.) — Despite absorbing a direct hit from Hurricane Irene, North Carolina’s Outer Banks are preparing for a busy Labor Day travel weekend and fall season with the exception of Hatteras Island, where there are no golf courses.

Most all of the region’s golf courses are open for play, including all 18 holes at Kilmarlic Golf Club, The Currituck Club, The Pointe Golf Club, The Carolina Club and The Sound Golf Links.

Nags Head Golf Links, located adjacent to the Roanoke Sound and the area’s southern-most golf course, is the lone exception and expected to reopen in a few weeks.

“The Outer Banks and its people are very resilient,” said life-long resident Bryan Sullivan of Kilmarlic Golf Club and the Outer Banks Golf Association. “We are open for golf this weekend and this Fall. The region experienced sound-side flooding, but the courses are now playable.”

The latest visitor information and travel updates can be accessed at www.OuterBanks.org and www.VisitCurrituck.com. Golf package information is available at www.PlayOBXGolf.com or 800-916-6244.

Best known as host site of the North Carolina Open in 2004 and 2009, Kilmarlic Golf Club is nestled among 605 acres of maritime forest and sprawling wetlands. Award-winning golf course architect Tom Steele’s classic design creates stimulating challenges with its outstanding layout and conditioning, as it meanders through canopies of giant oak, pine and dogwood that exemplify the natural beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and illustrate Kilmarlic’s unique partnership between golf and nature — not to mention a remarkable 15 acres of coastal ponds and lakes creating scenic natural hazards.

Designed by world-renowned architect Rees Jones, The Currituck Club is a breathtaking layout that stretches across nearly 7,000 yards of diverse coastal terrain, including towering sand dunes, wetlands, maritime forests and soundside shoreline. Golf Magazine awarded the course a coveted spot on its list of “Top 10 You Can Play,” and Golf Digest ranked Currituck Club as one of the Top 25 courses in North Carolina.

The Pointe Golf Club is recognized as one of the area’s most player-friendly and best conditioned golf courses, making it a “must play” on any Outer Banks vacation. Home to the area’s finest public practice facility, it features a full driving range and short game area that includes a practice putting green, chipping greens and practice bunker.

Meanwhile, the “locals’ choice” for great golf on the Outer Banks is The Carolina Club, which features superb bent grass greens and a picturesque par-3 island green. Five sets of tees and strong ocean breezes allow you to match your game to the challenge, ensuring that all skill levels will have an enjoyable time.
The Sound Golf Links at nearby Albemarle Plantation in Hertford is another highly-acclaimed design by legendary golf course architect Dan Maples. The course meanders through low country marshland and forests of towering pines and moss-draped cypress, creating a spectacular backdrop of breathtaking scenery as the final three holes overlook the Albemarle Sound.

Nags Head Golf Links, designed by Bob Moore, is another true, Scottish, links-style course nestled into the natural, windswept environment of the Outer Banks. Sand dunes, wild sea grasses and rugged coastline create holes that Golf Digest labeled as “among the most beautiful in the eastern United States.” The ever-changing coastal winds provide a different challenge each round.

Unconscious Putting: Dave Stockton's Guide to Unlocking Your Signature Stroke

"I told him: 'You're a great ball player, and your putting is great. We just need to work on the mental side of things.' His mechanics were flawless, but he had to stop concentrating on technique and play what was in front of him," said Dave Stockton about newly crowned US Open champion Rory McIlroy.

This fundamental idea: playing what is in front of you, is central to UNCONSCIOUS PUTTING: Dave Stockton's Guide to Unlocking Your Signature Stroke (Gotham Books, September 15, 2011; $27.50, Hardcover) by Dave Stockton with Matthew Rudy and a foreword by Phil Mickelson.

In UNCONSCIOUS PUTTING, Stockton stresses a new mental approach: one free of mechanical thoughts, alongside physical routines that insure a player stays locked in on their target. Stockton reveals the putting secrets that have helped revitalize the short games of players at every handicap level - from Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy to the hundreds of 18-handicappers Stockton sees at corporate events every year.

Stockton says that the key is to turn putting into an unconscious act, just like signing your name or clicking the turn signal while driving.

Stockton, one of the best putting coaches in the game today, shows readers how to create their own unique putting signature and make their entire pre-putt routine focus on acquiring and retaining a visual of the intended line, then setting up to the putt so that they hit the ball on that line effortlessly.

The strategies found in UNCONSCIOUS PUTTING fixed Rory McIlroy's troubles in 10 minutes and were integral in his win at the US Open. Imagine what they can do for the casual golfer's game.

At its core, KG:2 is a stand bag offering the Sun Mountain patented Roller Bottom and recessed Y-Spring activator for faster leg action and tight-to-the-bag retraction, top mounted stand attachment for increased durability and stability, top-mounted strap attachment for more balanced carrying, and triangular non-slip foot pads that resist sinking into grass and sliding on slick surfaces.

The cart-friendly bottom is designed with a new shape and a re-tooled foot mechanism that allows the bag to stand straight on the back of a riding golf cart, offering easier pocket access. The leg-lock system secures the legs to the bag so they do not activate inadvertently.

A popular bag feature continues to be Sun Mountain’s patented top with built-in handles that provide a convenient spot to grab when picking the bag up and removing from the shoulder. KG:2 offers three top hand-holds making it easier to use both hands to lift the bag on and off of a cart as well as a new lift-assist handle built in to one of the bag’s pockets.

In addition to golf bags, Sun Mountain is dedicated to finding the most innovative fabrics, the latest manufacturing processes, and the best designs to create a line of performance outerwear that protects from rain, wind and cold. For over 25 years, Sun Mountain has been designing and manufacturing functional, high-quality, lightweight golf bags for the serious golfer. Sun Mountain is responsible for many industry firsts, including being the first to use backpacking technology to produce a lightweight nylon golf bag, and being the first to develop a stand bag with integral legs. Golf Tip: Hook and Slice at Will

Whether you want to hook or slice the golf ball, it is easy to do. Forget about all the technical tips. They'll just add confusion, which is the last thing you need when standing over a tee shot. To hook the ball, grip firmer with your right hand. To slice the ball, grip firmer with the left (assuming you're a right-handed player). Once you get the feel, see how much movement you experience and plan accordingly.

Course Spotlight: Acacia Country Club

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Acacia Country Club, in Beachwood, Ohio, is the essence of a private facility. While the budget may not be as lofty as others, the course condition and customer service  are top notch.

The Par-3 11th hole only measures about 170 yards from the member tees, but lose your tee shot only slightly right and you're in some deep, hidden bunkers. From there, bogie is a good score.

STX ProFIT 4 & 5 Putters now available in dramatic black finish

(BALTIMORE) - STX Golf, world-renowned as an industry pioneer in putter innovation, and for its patented Soft Face Insert Technology, announced that their customizable ProFIT 4 & 5 Putters have been updated with new design elements and a distinctive black finish.

The STX ProFIT 4 & 5 Putters resemble a classically inspired blade putter but are accented with contemporary hardware and feature the STX patented interchangeable insert technology. This dynamic combination creates a modern look and the new non-glare dramatic black finish enhances these artistic putters.

"The design team did a great job choosing the exact finish and adding subtle design elements to enhance the look of the ProFIT line. The new black finish compliments the overall style of the putters perfectly," stated STX Director of Golf Steve Henneman.

In addition to the ProFIT's exceptional aesthetics, both the STX ProFIT 4 & 5 Putters include the STX interchangeable face and weight technology, a highly developed system that provides for quick and easy weighting and face adjustments. This innovative feature allows the golfer to customize or control the putter head and speed according to preferences and course conditions.

The STX ProFIT 4 & 5 putters were developed for the golfer who would like to fully customize their putter's feel and response. The "softest" black insert comes equipped on both, the medium resilient red insert and firmer green insert are fully compatible and sold separately. The ProFIT 4 putter is designed with a plumber's neck hosel while the ProFIT 5 offers a flare neck design, and both models feature 3 degrees of loft with a 71 degree lie angle. STX's exclusive black and white Golf Pride grip adds to the ProFIT's overall look and feel. Suggested retail is $199.99 and is available in both right and left hand models.

For a variety of responses and feel, STX Putters are available with black, red and green insert options. The black insert is the softest in the STX line. It delivers the highest friction and resilience rate, plus increased dwell time. Those characteristics are chemically formulated to get the ball rolling sooner and keep your putts on line. For a medium resiliency rate, the red insert offers an intermediate amount of dwell time for golfers that prefer a harder feel. And, for golfers who prefer the feel of a steel putter, the green insert provides a harder feel with less resilience.

Testing shows STX Putters have almost twice the dwell time of putters with harder inserts and nearly three times the dwell time of metal faced putters. The difference is due to the high coefficient of friction (COF) that is chemically engineered into each STX insert. The high COF results in unequaled precision on the greens. STX inserts also provide the signature STX "Feel", which holds the ball on the face longer to impart topspin and improve the feel of the putter.

Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains announces fall golf opportunities

(POCONO MOUNTAINS, Pa.) - Labor Day is next week, which means fall is right around the corner. But there are still two solid months of golf remaining in the beautiful Pocono Mountains (www.800poconos.com), where ideal conditions and stunning vistas make fall the favorite time of year for many golfers.

It's also a great time to follow the foliage, north to south, by combining fall rounds on some of the region's 35 courses with a family vacation and some exciting seasonal events. To ensure the leaves are at their peak color, check the Fall Foliage Forecast (570.421.5565), which provides weekly updates from mid-September through the end of October.

Brian Crowell's 'Slice-Free Golf' helps conquer ugliest shot in golf

(WESTPORT, Conn.) - The worst shot in golf is the slice and it haunts and frustrates millions of golfers who lose distance and ruin scores as they strive to cure this deflating swing flaw. Brian Crowell, a TV golf commentator and the highly regarded Head Golf Professional at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford, New York, was once a slicer and for 20 years as an instructor he has helped golfers cure the embarrassing "banana ball."

Crowell has creatively pulled together his knowledge and teaching techniques by publishing Slice-Free Golf, the first book entirely devoted to helping golfers conquer the slice and learn how to hit the ball farther and straighter with power and accuracy.

Legend Gary Player recognized the need for a book on a swing problem that affects 82% of all golfers, and he endorsed Crowell's easy-to-follow guide by writing in the foreword: "Don't let the slice diminish your enjoyment of this great game. If cutting the ball is frustrating you, please read Slice-Free Golf. By following Brian's clear step-by-step program, you will develop more consistency, greater distance off the tee, and more enjoyment on the golf course. And your score will improve."

Slice-Free Golf offers three quick steps to beating the dreaded slice. Some 100 photographs clearly illustrate the right (and wrong) "Get Set," " Swing" and "Release" keys, and 26 clever drills guide golfers along the path to banishing banana balls forever. Crowell injects humor with empathy for the long-suffering slicer but the result of his program is a proven cure for the ugliest shot in golf.

Slice-Free Golf is available in several e-book formats and in two print editions: A black and white paperback for $14.95 and a premium full color version for $24.95. Slice-Free Golf may be ordered at www.slicefreegolf.com.

About Brian Crowell
As a national TV commentator, Crowell has covered The Masters, the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup. He has been a member of the NBCSports.com broadcast team since 2007. Iconic Nike Dunk Shoe Enters Golf - Wie to Debut them this Week

Nike Golf Pays Tribute to the Iconic Nike Dunk Shoe with the Introduction of the Nike Dunk NG

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) – There will be a familiar iconic shoe showing up on the feet of Nike Athletes Michelle Wie and Anthony Kim.  Both young athletes will be sporting the new Nike Dunk (NG) Golf shoe. Wie will debut the colorful shoes at this week’s Women’s Canadian Open and Kim will wear them in the coming weeks on the PGA Tour.

A Nike brand franchise with a wide appeal, the Dunk has history, heritage, and a consumer cultural connection that Nike Golf respects and celebrates. The new Nike Dunk NG, which inspires individuality and personal expression, will now be available for golfers starting January 1, 2012.

Staying true to the original Nike Dunk which was created 25 years ago, Nike Golf has kept the original last to ensure that the Nike Dunk NG feels just the same as the Dunks that people have grown to love without compromising performance for golf.  With golf specific spikes on the outsole and golf specific waterproof leather, the Nike Dunk has been transformed to perform on the course.

Keeping in line with the strong personality and attitude of the Nike Dunk, the Nike Dunk NG allows athletes to show their true colors on the course.  The energy of Soar Blue, Safety Orange, Court Green for men and Spark, Orange Glow and Mint for women allow consumers to have a bold, athletic look while coordinating with the apparel from the Nike Golf Sport Collection.

The Nike Dunk NG comes with two sets of shoelaces, allowing athletes to either accentuate the bright color of the shoe or to opt for traditional white.  With full-grain waterproof leather, the Nike Dunk NG can battle the elements of poor weather conditions.  The Scorpion Stinger Spikes ensure that traction is not an issue for the Nike Dunk NG.

A TOUCH OF NIKE DUNK HISTORY
The original Nike Dunk was created as a basketball shoe in 1985.  After it was introduced to the world, the Nike Dunk started a commotion when basketball teams began wearing them to match their uniforms.  New to the scene and already making a lasting impression, the Nike Dunks enjoyed a widespread following and massive popularity almost instantly. This new expression of style lasted through the years and Dunks have become the prized shoes for sneakerheads as well as fashion statements for anyone looking to add vintage style to their shoe collection. Now the Nike Dunk enters golf.

Miura Golf Introduces MG Hybrid

(VANCOUVER, British Columbia) - Japanese golf-club manufacturer Miura Golf-which has been making the world's highest-quality forged irons for 44 years-is officially introducing its MG Hybrids, the company announced today.

The launch of the MG Hybrids is exciting news for golfers, as Miura Golf-which has never had a fixed time frame for new-product introductions-only debuts new models when the quality of new technological advances demands it.

The MG Hybrids will be available in HB3 (20 degrees of loft) and HB4 (23 degrees of loft) models made from SUS455 steel in an I.P. Black finish. MG Hybrids-which carry a suggested retail price of $299 per club with graphite shafts and $279 per club with steel shafts and can be tested by visiting www.miuragolf.com to locate the closest Miura dealer.

"The days of the 'three-through-pitch' automatic set are over," says Adam Barr, President of Miura Golf. "Players are putting more thought into how they will configure their bags. So hybrids become even more important as supporters of the irons. The new MGs are designed with the recognition that hybrids can be used for everything from covering a lot of ground on par-5s to pinpoint shots into greens on long par-4s and par-3s. As the name 'hybrid' truly implies, these clubs play as multipurpose long-game tools golfers can rely on."

Utilities aim to pinpoint targets in the same way as irons do. The MG Hybrid was born from consumer feedback. The blade-iron design provides a sense of security when aiming at the target, allowing more advanced players to better concentrate on their games rather than wondering where the ball will go. The club's I.P. Black finish makes it appear more compact, resulting in increased player concentration at address.

The MG Hybrid follows through smoothly after impact thanks to Miura Golf's new Circle Cut method sole shape in which a line cuts through the club's sole, creating a stepped tier on the sole and the optimal center of gravity to provide the optimal ball trajectory for a hybrid iron.

The MG Hybrid mostly focuses on the blade's height, not the head volume. The blade height is almost the same size as the height of the ball at 43mm. Thus, golfers at address can think of the MG Hybrid as an iron at address, and can hit the ball the same way as an iron. Plus, golfers also have an increased amount of relief at address.

More information on Miura products can be found at www.miuragolf.com.

Cutter & Buck Unveils New Brand Initiative

Company embraces its Pacific Northwest roots, sets course for next 20 years

(SEATTLE) - Established here in 1989, Cutter & Buck announced today that in conjunction with the rollout of its Spring 2012 lines, the company is embracing its regional heritage with a new brand identity, "Genuine Spirit of the Pacific Northwest." The brand initiative incorporates the introduction of a denim-based fashion line, as well as the unveiling of a striking, modernized logo.

While not straying too far from its proud 20-plus years tradition of golf-inspired premier, high-quality sportswear, Cutter & Buck executives said the goal of the new initiative is to evolve its brand from niche-specialty to a global lifestyle brand, befitting of the Pacific Northwest where residents naturally thrive between an urban and outdoor lifestyle.

According to Jens Petersson, Cutter & Buck CEO, the championing of a new brand represents a natural evolution for the company.

"Our customers know quality in a garment, and appreciate our golf heritage - proven performance apparel, functional and comfortable styles that work on and off the course," Petersson said. "Now it becomes paramount to remain relevant in all aspects of their active lifestyle, and by doing so we lay the foundation for Cutter & Buck's next 20 years. As we evolve with interesting, new views on classic items, we also comprehend the importance of staying true to our roots of superb craftsmanship, distinctive and stylish clothing, and an exceptionally high level of customer service."

Featuring apparel that seamlessly transitions from urban to outdoor is ideal for customers with active lifestyles, Petersson added, whether they are going to work, fitting a quick nine holes into their day, saving time for a little play, stepping out at night, or heading off for the weekend. With its functionality and versatility, he said the new denim-based line epitomizes the Pacific Northwest lifestyle.

Responding to market trends and input from its customers, Cutter & Buck also is updating the silhouette of its men's apparel by introducing a slimmer fit. The change will focus on its knit polos and woven shirts, with specific adjustments being made in body length, chest width, cross shoulder (back and front), knit polo collar and neck fit, and sleeve length and openings. Cutter & Buck shirts will sit closer to the neck to create a modernized silhouette.

"While we have been well known for offering a generous cut, we think that market trends speak clearly to this being the perfect time to introduce our customer to a tidier silhouette, which enhances their appearance by trimming it up in just the right places," said Julie Snow, vice president, design and merchandising for Cutter & Buck. "This takes our fit from generous to relaxed and easy."

The newly updated Cutter & Buck logo, meanwhile, retains the core elements of the company's past logo, but also provides for a striking and modern look that reinforces the brand initiative, and evokes the classic styling for which the company has long been renowned.

According to Stacy Mangum, Cutter & Buck's brand manager, "We are motivated by the real people who wear our clothes - the barista who sails our lakes; the aquarium volunteer who is the local golf champ; the children's book illustrator who cycles to work every day. We think Seattle and our surrounding Pacific Northwest environs provide a perfect inspiration for our collections: adaptable, easy-going, independent and pioneering."

The Cutter & Buck Spring 2012 line is due to be introduced to stores in November.

(HOLLYWOOD, Fla.) - Brain Center International - creator of science-based interactive brain fitness programs - introduces Pro Mental Coach, golf's first mental coaching software created to help players master the game, play smarter and lower scores.

Part of the new state-of-the-art technology at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance at PGA Village, in Port St. Lucie, FL, Pro Mental Coach independently assesses mental skills and customizes a training program fitting each user's needs. PC and Mac compatible, it features scientifically-proven exergames that are fun and easy. These build the "brain muscle," helping create an "in the zone" mental state through improved focus, confidence, motivation, stress management, endurance and recovery from bad shots.

"It's a fact that golf is 90 percent in your head, and the outcome of each round is usually determined by how a player manages the mental game," says Dr. Stephane Bergeron, Founder of BCI. "Our software helps golfers train the part of their game that's been holding them back, from the comfort and privacy of home, 24/7, no appointment necessary."

Pro Mental Coach ($139.95) is powered by a proprietary Dynamic Intelligence System. This breakthrough neuroscience technology was developed by BCI in collaboration with medical centers. It is used in clinical research funded by National Institutes of Health.

This personalizes each training session, creating a fully customized regimen to deliver maximum benefits in the shortest period of time.

"The exergames featured in Pro Mental Coach replicate on-course stress, allowing golfers and their instructors to learn what areas of the mental game are strong and train those that need it," says Joe Hallett, coach of LPGA Tour star Stacy Lewis and a GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher. "An hour a week is all it takes to effectively manage tough times, play better and enjoy the game more."

"The PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance is excited to integrate Pro Mental Coach into its golf instruction program, as mental game training should be part of every golfer's routine," says Bob Baldassari, PGA Senior Director, Player Development and PGA General Manager of the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. BrightSpot Solutions' Spotless Swing Golf Towel Now at Select Dick's Sporting Goods Stores

(Boulder, CO) - Scott Salzman, inventor of the three-in-one Spotless Swing Golf Towel, and President of BrightSpot Solutions announced today that their innovative towels are now in stock and available at select Dick's Sporting Goods stores.

"We did a test run of 20 stores and the sales were quickly successful. Dick's has now expanded the number of stores carrying Spotless Swing," said Salzman

The revolutionary new Spotless Swing Golf Towel was introduced in January at the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show is now taking the golf accessories market by storm. It is being called the new "standard" in golf towels by industry insiders.
To view a list of Dick's stores which carry Spotless Swing, visit the store locator page at: www.spotlessswing.com/store_locator.

About Spotless Swing Golf Towel
Golfers of all skill levels are looking for an edge in their game. When a golfer strikes the ball with a clean clubface, it allows for better contact with the ball, ensuring greater backspin, and therefore, longer distance and enhanced accuracy.

Until now, the only way to clean the mud and dirt off your golf clubs during your round was to water down a standard towel or use a brush. However, brushes are awkward and messy and a watered down towel dries out during your round rendering it useless.

Now there is an alternative. A portion of the inside of the Premium Multi-Use Spotless Swing Golf Towel is made of a uniquely designed MicroBrush fabric that easily cleans the grooves of the club-face where dirt hides from ordinary towels. The fabric is coarse enough to clean deeply into the grooves yet soft enough to not damage the golf club finish, and absolutely no water is needed. The ultra-high quality microfiber fabric that makes up main body of the Spotless Swing absorbs over 600% of its weight in dirt, mud and water.

The Spotless Swing Golf Towel functions as three golf towels in one:
1. Outside keeps the hands, face, glove and grips clean and dry
2. Inside protects and preserves golf clubs by removing dirt, mud and water
3. Revolutionary MicroBrush fabric cleans club grooves effortlessly preparing the club for its next shot

Thanks to Spotless Swing, golfers can now keep their clubs clean throughout their round and be prepared for each and every shot. Whether it's the 1st hole or the 18th, the Spotless Swing Golf Towel is there to handle the task.

The Spotless Swing is available in four colors: Black (with red trim), Red (with black trim), solid Black and solid Pink, and conveniently attaches to any golf bag with the included carabineer clip.

For more information on the Spotless Swing Golf Towel, call 1-800-738-7293, or visit their website at www.SpotlessSwing.com.

Little Mountain is a residential course with an emphasis on golf

Standing on the first tee at Little Mountain Country Club, golfers are only given a hint as to what awaits them over the next 4 hours. While many of the fairways are generous - as is the case on the opening hole - the sand traps are as plentiful and varied as any course in the region.

Little Mountain offers a nice mix of long and short holes, wonderful playing conditions and distant views of Lake Erie from its highest points, but it is likely to be the bunkers that dominate conversation following a round. Finding yourself in some of the deeper traps will lead to thoughts of just getting out, as opposed to getting up and down to save a score.

Designed by Ohio-based Hurdzan and Fry Design, Little Mountain is a residential course with an emphasis on golf - not homes. That’s not to say the houses aren’t beautiful, only an afterthought while playing.

A true target-golf layout, well-positioned shots are paramount as you make your way through the round. Risk-reward opportunities abound, offering players equal chances to attack or play it safe. Take advantage of the on-cart GPS systems to plot your strategy.

With four sets of tees - ranging from 4,982 to 6,616 yards - Little Mountain is a course playable by any level of golfer and forced carries are minimal. Low handicappers will find ample challenge, while novice golfers aren’t likely to give up the game based on this design.

Word of warning: In addition to the sandy battles, golfers who tend to fight the left side of the course will find the back nine particularly daunting as more than half the holes overlook an unforgiving gorge.

Weekday rates (18 holes with cart) are $59. Flexible rates on the weekends range from $39 (after 3 p.m.) to $69 (before 8 a.m.). Little Mountain also offers junior and senior rates. For a complete listing of rates, as well as additional information, visit www.littlemountaincc.com

John Spiwak, Course Superintendent, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status on this course and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. "Eastpointe Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Jim Sluiter, Staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs.

Spiwak noted "We have worked hard to achieve this designation and are very proud of our course and our standing as a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary"

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program.

McConnell Makeover on Display at Wyndham Championship

Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club, site of this week’s Wyndham Championship, enhanced by McConnell Golf

(RALEIGH, N.C.) — In February, after McConnell Golf purchased Sedgefield Country Club, Wyndham Championship Tournament Director Mark Brazil hailed the moment. A true golf connoisseur, Brazil was well aware of the extensive renovation and restoration work McConnell Golf had already performed at its stable of private clubs strategically located around the Carolinas, and knew Sedgefield was now in line for the same type attention.

“We know John McConnell and his track record is impressive, so we understand the significance of this transaction, how it will affect the Wyndham Championship’s host course, and what it means for the future of the club and the tournament,” Brazil said. “If history is any indication, John will make significant enhancements at Sedgefield, which will upgrade what is already a beautiful club.”

When the 2011 Wyndham Championship tees off this week, Sedgefield will proudly unveil a subtle yet substantive facelift courtesy of its new owners at McConnell Golf, part of the millions in capital investment improvements above the purchase price McConnell Golf has performed at its clubs to date since its founding in 2003.

In August, McConnell Golf added its eighth premier golf club and placed its stamp on the PGA TOUR’S Nationwide Tour with its acquisition of TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh. Priding itself on providing 3,000-plus members a quality golf experience at each of its award-winning courses — including Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, N.C.; Cardinal Golf & Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.; Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C.; Old North State Club in New London N.C.; Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, S.C.; and The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. — McConnell Golf’s mantra is “Pure Golf for the True Golfer.”

In its first six month of ownership at Sedgefield Country Club, McConnell Golf invested more than $1 million towards improvements highlighted by:

• A new “Wall of Champions” overlooking the ninth green and inscribed with the names of all past Wyndham Championship winners — including golf greats such as Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Seve Ballesteros — and crested by stone busts of the tournament’s previous multiple-time winners including eight-time champion Sam Snead, along with two-time champs Byron Nelson, Billy Casper and Davis Love III.

• A freshly painted water tower overlooking the proceedings this week — a historical landmark at Sedgefield visible from numerous vantage points around the golf course.

• Re-routed cart paths and stone bridge renovation on Nos. 10 and 18, improving both aesthetics and playability of both golf holes.

• Extensive bunker work on No. 3.

• Major tree work and landscaping around the clubhouse and along No. 1 fairway, with additional landscaping coming this fall in front of the clubhouse.

• Four new brick columns adorning the clubhouse entrance.

• An updated Sedgefield clubhouse interior designed by Leo Dowell Interiors in Charlotte, N.C., which brings fresh, vibrant color schemes to the main level of the clubhouse, and a stunning white stairwell adorning black-and-white photos of past tourney champions, along with historical photos of the golf course and clubhouse.

• A Fitness Center breaking ground after the club’s pool closes for the summer, which will feature the latest in state-of-the-art equipment, massage therapy and much more.

In 2003, John McConnell received rave reviews around the golf world for his purchase of Raleigh Country Club, the last course ever designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. Word at the time was that the investors who picked up Raleigh CC’s bank note when the club filed for bankruptcy were planning to bulldoze the golf course and build condominiums in its place.

A passionate golfer who saw the opportunity to preserve an important piece of golf history, McConnell refused to watch Ross’ final legacy turned into a housing subdivision. In a 2005 Golfweek magazine feature story about McConnell titled “Saving Donald Ross,” one Raleigh CC member dubbed him the club’s “white knight.”

Unlike other multiple-club owners around the country, McConnell Golf prides itself on preserving the private club environment in a geographically strategic manner — which is why McConnell Golf doesn’t own any courses outside the Carolinas. McConnell keeps its clubs private at a membership arrangement almost unheard of today: Initiation at one McConnell Golf club gains access to all eight properties.

Legendary architects are also part of the McConnell Golf strategy. The August purchase of TPC Wakefield and the Hale Irwin-designed golf course added another highly regarded golf course architect to an impressive McConnell Golf menu featuring the likes of Ross, Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman.

McConnell Golf’s philosophy is that when chasing the discretionary dollar, a company must offer a better product. “We treat our membership like customers,” McConnell said. “To attract new members, you do right by the ones you already have. They are members, but truly they are customers. If they don’t like the product we are delivering, we will lose them as customers.”

McConnell Golf takes enormous pride in doing its part to give back to the game as well. Look no further than the McConnell Golf High School Golf Scholarship, an innovative program intended for young golfers based on their level of talent, need, and commitment to the sport — as well as their proven dedication and value to the future of golf — designed to offer playing opportunities to young golfers that may not have the financial ability to play challenging courses.

“This is one of the most exciting and rewarding programs in which we’ve been involved,” said McConnell. “Our company is committed to amateur and junior golf. Some of the best junior golfers do not have access to practice facilities and good courses. Our goal is to provide this access and supervision in hopes of helping these talented young players move to the next level of play, and possibly allow them to elevate to the point where golf can become a means of helping them receive financial assistance for higher education and even play beyond the collegiate level.”

There are numerous championship events contested over McConnell Golf properties. Old North State Club served as the host site for the ACC Women’s Golf Championship in the early 1990s and the league was so impressed it awarded Old North State the men’s golf championship in 1995 — and it has remained there for all but three of the years since, providing a challenging venue for the likes of former collegiate stars like former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, former British Open champions David Duval and Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, Jonathan Byrd, Bill Haas and Mark Wilson.

Plus, there is The Cardinal Amateur in Greensboro, which is not only one of the most coveted amateur events in the country — with a storied history of matching some of the world’s top players in a competitive but fun environment — but also has been a leader in community charity dating back to 1983, when its first educational scholarship was announced. The 2011 tournament champion, Olafur Loftsson, is playing the Wyndham on a McConnell Golf sponsor’s exemption as the winner of last weekend’s Cardinal Amateur. He will be the first golfer from Iceland to compete in a PGA TOUR event.

At the end of the day, McConnell said he approaches private club ownership with the same philosophy he used in the medical software field: Attention to detail, outworking the competition and offering the highest value proposition possible for its customers — or in this case, its members.

“I’ve always said if you can provide the high quality of product and service, in the end, you’re going to beat most of your competitors,” McConnell said. “The model of assessments and cost cutting is a short-term fix. Our team is being built to think long term.”

Get back to basics with T2Greens cross training aid

Only correct practice allows golfers to fully develop their skills as well as their confidence as they see improvements with their shots. While pros may be there to teach individuals through words, golf training aids can teach through repetition, and T2greens.com has released the ultimate set of training aids to help any golf player get out of their playing rut.

From the swing, the T2Greens Training System helps golfers develop a refined and repeatable motion, training muscle memory. The Swing Assistant component of T2Greens aids in learning the proper Iron Swing, which can be the trickiest set of clubs to hit. Golfers can assess where adjustments need be made as mis-hits are clearly marked by a 6 tee set up.

The T2Greens Training System provides a solution for golfers looking to improve their green side chipping game. T2Greens has created a simple system, providing a visual guide to correctly and consistently connect with chip shots while training hand-eye coordination. Simply place the adhesive disc to the club head, this attachment is designed not to interfere with the shot itself and will not alter club weight. The Chipping Assistant trains the proper posture of the golf player by looking at the assistant with head down and focus on the ball before smoothly releasing the club.

Completing the golfer's game is the aim and the T2Greens Training System delivers this with The Putting Assistant. The virtually weightless, putting training aid works with any putter and allows golfers to zero in on the putters sweet spot. The Putting Assistant trains "memory" on the perfect putting stroke.

A repetitive use of the cross training golf aid will allow golfers to improve skills that can be applied from the tee box to the green. By far the best feature of the T2Greens Training Aid System is the fact that it is compact, fitting into a golfers pocket to allow effective training to take place where ever the golfer travels. How Outlast Technology Works:
Products equipped with Outlast phase-change material balance temperature fluctuations. Outlast technology is a special, patented formulation of Thermocule or microencapsulated phase-change materials that are applied to fibers, fabrics and coatings. These Thermocules continuously absorb excess body heat and release it to maintain a more constant body temperature. Outlast reduces heat and moisture in the shoe's interior by nearly 50 percent, keeping the foot cool, dry, and very comfortable.

How PowerUp Outsole System Works:
The design of Etonic's PowerUp Outsole was inspired by the 33 percent of PGA Tour players that continue to use steel spikes to maximize traction and power transfer to the ball. Since its introduction in 2008, PowerUp Technology has received outstanding accolades from consumers and golf specialty retailers alike. The Difference has four components to its PowerUp Outsole: Inside-Out Spike placement, PowerPod, PowerPlay Flex Zone and Stabilizer Heel Technology. Each component works with the foot's natural anatomy to maximize traction, flexibility and stability and to improve balance while maximizing power transfer to the ball.

Prestonwood Country Club (NC) opens state-of-the-art Golf Learning Center

Prestonwood enhances its already starry list of amenities by constructing what may be the finest golf learning, practice and club-fitting facility on the East Coast.

(Cary, N.C.) – Prestonwood Country Club Director of Golf Operations Larry Conner recalls a past discussion he had with Club owners regarding the prospect of constructing an entirely new learning facility and hiring of a new director of instruction for the Club.

Conner presented a print-out of extensive interactive website instruction posted by a long-time colleague of his, Tom Ream. After reviewing the packet of information for an evening, Prestonwood’s owners returned to Conner the next day and told him: “You hire Tom Ream and we’ll build you a golf learning center.”

Less than three years later, Conner got his wish. In early July, Prestonwood Country Club debuted what will stand as one of the country’s finest Golf Learning Centers, employing top golf instructors — led by Ream — and housing the latest state-of-the-art technology and equipment. The Club’s new Learning Center provides members of all playing ability a unique, multi-disciplinary and personalized approach with proven results intended to improve their games and lower their scores.

The 2,500-square-foot building includes indoor and outdoor bays, and a 10,000-square-foot grass teaching area tee box. In addition, a V1 swing analysis video system, indoor putting studio with the S.A.M. PuttLab putting analysis system, S.A.M. BalanceLab, K-Vest, and TrackMan launch monitor highlight the most advanced and comprehensive golf teaching and club-fitting technology anywhere.

“I’m like a kid at Christmas,” said Ream. “Everything a golf instructor could want is right here.”

Architect Erich Wilkinson — along with Conner, Ream and Prestonwood General Manager Matt Massei, former director of golf at the Pinehurst Resort — visited and researched other notable golf learning facilities up and down the East Coast, including Pinehurst and Pine Needles, for design models. “We got a good footprint and we modified it for the space we had here,” said Conner, Prestonwood’s director of golf since 2008. “We can now safely say we offer complete game-improvement programs to meet all our members’ needs.”

The Prestonwood CC philosophy focuses on five core instruction areas including the long game, short game, putting, golf fitness and club fitting, specializing in customized one- to four-day game improvement programs for individuals and groups as well as year-round golf clinics and member sponsored corporate golf programs. In addition, Prestonwood offers strength training and golf specific exercise programs from its Titleist Performance Institute Certified Instructor, Mike Barker.

Prestonwood Country Club is best known for its acclaimed golf courses, outstanding facilities and a wide array of tournaments for men, women, seniors and junior events, most notably the SAS Championship PGA Champions Tour event for the past 10 years. It also hosted the Nationwide Tour and qualifiers for the United States Open.

Originally designed by architect Tom Jackson, the three golf courses underwent recent renovations at the hand of Prestonwood resident and member Rick Robbins, a former Jack Nicklaus design protégé who has achieved worldwide success since going out on his own. The Meadows Course reopened in 2009 and the Fairways Course, along with the Club’s PGA Family Tee Course, reopened in fall of 2010. The Highlands Course is currently under renovation and will re-open in September 2011.

Little wonder Prestonwood has gained renown as a “golfing” club. A recent count shows that there are more than 40 Prestonwood products currently on partial or full collegiate golf scholarships, including Lee Bedford (Wake Forest), Michael Cromie (Georgia) and Taelor Ruben (Ole Miss).
